The government is proposing to offer failed asylum seekers £3000 if they agree to go to Rwanda. I don’t get it, because won’t offering money to go to another country encourage more ineligible people rather than less to come to the UK knowing they will be relocated, with £3k to start a new life, ultimately anywhere they choose?

If the threat of dying either by drowning or freezing in the channel isn’t a deterrent I very much doubt that Rwanda will beconfused?

Can anyone explain to me why James Cleverly said on National tv today that it was the Labour Lords that were blocking the Rwanda bill given that there are for more Conservative Lords than Labour, even taking into account the LibDem Lords. Why are politicians allowed to make such statements with no one calling them out? ( mind you, perhaps the Conservative Lords are all on their yachts and not in Westminster ?)….

There are lots of cross benchers, Labour plus them could outvote the Tories - which surely is right, rather than any one party dominating the Lords. Cleverly isn’t very though, he’s known for getting things wrong.

Many of the cross benchers are very valuable as they often are appointed for their work in the community on various issues not through a political party and won't vote on a party basis.
Cleverly is just bitter about it.

Refugee Action has created a game based on questions asked in real refugee interviews.

"We've created this quiz using questions that refugees were asked in real Home Office asylum interviews. We’ve adapted them to suit a UK audience, and when you give each answer we share some of the refugees’ actual experiences.
^Some of the questions might surprise you, but don’t worry - unlike people in the asylum system, your life won't depend on getting them right. . . ."

Take the test -

The Rwanda scheme is a terrible waste of money to achieve very little except pandering to Tory right wing voters who might defect to Reform. Cleverly's recent trip to Rwanda cost £156,000 by private jet. Could have been better spent.

Lee Anderson is going by way of protest re the England Football Strip.

Win win!

Without even considering how dreadful the corrupt Conservatives have been over the last nine years, the Rwanda plan would, on its own, make any British citizen with a sense of fairness and decency, vote for anyone except the Conservatives.

At the general election, as we still have to vote under the undemocratic FPTP voting system, please identify the candidate in your constituency best placed to defeat the Conservatives - Liberal Democrat, Labour or Green, and vote for that candidate.

We simply cannot afford four or five more years of gross incopetence, chaos and corruption.

I can hardly believe that the Rwanda Plan is going to happen[with amendments from the original I think].

Marmin Tue 23-Apr-24 07:32:44

A despicable act from a despicable and utterly shameless government.

MayBee70 Tue 23-Apr-24 07:47:01

So what is happening about those poor people who worked for us in Afghanistan? Are they now going to be sent to Rwanda? I can’t believe that Andrew Mitchell ( who I thought was one of the few remaining decent Conservative MP’s) is now saying that Rwanda is safer than London sad

MayBee70 Tue 23-Apr-24 07:49:19

Also, did anyone see the news item that pointed out the other day that many people whose asylum claims were not granted still remained here years later because there was nothing in place to return them to their original country.

The government 's approach to immigration has been shambolic and utterly disgraceful. I used to think we were a decent humane society but we're not. Fgs if people can't claim asylum unless they are on British soil we are making them take unsafe routes.

Freya5 Tue 23-Apr-24 08:35:35

If they've claimed asylum, then been refused, what then. They have no right to be here, often their own countries won't take them back, what is left, the chance of a new start in Rwanda, or living illegally under the radar, being abused and almost certainly at daily risk of being imprisoned for immigration offences.
Locally we have had several raids finding illegal immigrants working. Asian restaurants.

Five have lost their lives this morning in French waters trying to teach the U.K.

The people smugglers have to be stopped.

A Government minister doing the rounds this morning reiterated that any Afghan nationals who worked for/with the U.K. armed forces will not be sent to Rwanda, they will be settled here.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 23-Apr-24 09:35:59

I feel reasonably confident that this time next year - this shameful period will be behind us, and Rwanda will be just a one nightmare amongst so many attempts by the Tories to divide and set our society against each other.

MayBee70 Tue 23-Apr-24 10:05:14

Yvette Cooper said on Sky News that Rwanda will not be part of a Labour immigration plan.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 23-Apr-24 10:07:05

I have always voted Conservative in GE, I am not in favour of the Rwanda Plan

The Rwanda plan isn't about people who have been refused asylum. It's for people whose claims haven't even been considered. The claims will be processed in Rwanda and they will then be given asylum in Rwanda with no option to return to the UK.

That's something I suppose. Let's just hope the promise is kept.

Exactly that.

Read up on Saleh Ahmed Handule Ali.

But beware the wonderous HO does not come out of it well.

What is the Labour plan?

nanna8 Tue 23-Apr-24 10:35:37

I suppose they have to do something but Rwanda seems rather extreme. Why not somewhere a bit more hospitable? Why are so many risking their lives to reach a far off country? There must be a lot of support available because they wouldn’t bother otherwise. Past guilt ?

I’d guess they wisely won’t announce any detailed plans, about that or anything else until the election is called. What would be the point in ping ponging now?

I agree with you Casdon.

Did anybody see the place they will be living in Rwanda? It was on TV last night. Absolutely beautiful, clean, light, spacious …. i would happily live there. Lots of people are choosing to go there on holiday now.

My friend is from Tanzania and knows Rwanda well. She says it is green, vibrant and a great place to live now. If you are prepared to work there then you will do well.
