Mark Drakeford (69) steps down as First Minister for Wales this Easter. This man came second to him in the voting in 2018. Looking him up on Wiki he is 49, and was health minister between 2016 and May 2021, overseeing Wales' initial response to Covid.

He says that experience would stand him in good stead to be first minister, but he has also been criticised after admitting he had not read key documents relating to pandemic planning.

Any of our GN community know of him/fancy his chances? I admit I only became curious about Drakeford’s successor because of today’s Covid Inquiry session and became curious.

I hope not.
Please will someone else step forward?

He says that experience would stand him in good stead to be first minister, but he has also been criticised after admitting he had not read key documents relating to pandemic planning.

And broke Covid rules himself.

There are two candidates for the leadership, the other one is the current Minister for Education, Jeremy Miles.
Here’s the information about the process.

It’s going to be close I think.

Neither fills me with any confidence.

I think they’ll be no improvement on Drakeford.

Casdon Wed 13-Mar-24 18:10:08

I still miss Rhodri Morgan to be fair.

I quite like Drakeford

No-one is perfect.

I do too. He doesn’t always get it right, but he isn’t self serving, and he genuinely cares I think. I don’t know enough about the two candidates abilities or otherwise to comment.

I don't know anything about Jeremy Miles.

But I don't have a vote anyway.

I didn't like Alun Michael but even he would be an improvement to these two.
I also agree it's a shame Rhodri Morgan is no longer with.

"I have the honour of becoming the first black leader in any European country" So what colour is Rishi then, green?

midgey Sat 16-Mar-24 13:10:23

Rishi is brown!

Urmstongran Sat 16-Mar-24 13:27:02

And he’s mixed race.

Callistemon21 Sat 16-Mar-24 13:32:40

I don't care what ethnicity he is as long as he can do the job. Which I doubt on past record.

Anniebach Sat 16-Mar-24 13:38:45

I voted for him

Urmstongran Sat 16-Mar-24 14:00:25

I think the turnout was only 16%? If so, a very poor show. Mind you as my dear old dad used to say “if you don’t vote you have no right to moan for the next four years”. Well said, Dad.

And it was a narrow win

JamesandJon33 Sat 16-Mar-24 16:42:49

growstuff, I would never throw any book in a bin. Whether I agreed with its contents or not.

JamesandJon33 Sat 16-Mar-24 16:43:41

Sorry folks. Page jumped somehow.

He means of Afro-Caribbean descent, as opposed to Asian, and in that regard he is correct. His mother was a Zambian chicken farmer, his father a Welsh vet.

I thought that when they, BBC news, said that he was the first Black leader as you have Rishi Sinai and Humza Yousaf in Scotland, my DD informed me they are classed as Asian not Black. I can't keep up with all the classification.

62Granny Sat 16-Mar-24 17:50:37

Sunak not Sinai, spell /auto check😡

Well, I can moan because I didn't have a vote. It was only Welsh Labour Party members and affiliated Trades Unions.

Well, I would always have said that but got slapped down a few years ago and told they were black (whether they liked it or not).

Have to love whitesplaining, especially from folk who can’t tell two different ethnic backgrounds apart.
