I am sorry to hear that M0nica and yes I think I am living a sheltered life. I also avoid most tabloid news. I get my news on here!
Back in the 60s when I was a teenager there were suicides and drug overdoses.
A friend of mine jumped from an upstairs window having taken LSD. Her dad was the hospital consultant who had to operate on her. She was left with brain damage.

Where have we gone wrong....
(151 Posts)I've been reading the thread about what each would do should they win the next election. I will confess upfront that I have always voted conservative until now.
I am 86, mother, grand-mother, great-grand-mother. Looking back, and I know hindsight is the best sight of all, where do you think it all started going wrong? Not just politically but socially too? How has it come down to twelve year olds carrying knives and murdering people in the street? I know times have changed, but its obviously not been for the better in some ways, yet compared to the poverty extant in the 30's when I was born we are all better off....or perhaps my eyes do not see the worst situations? I don't know about that? I would have thought TV pushed everything that it could straight into the home these days! Where have we gone wrong , folks?
I would say it went wrong when Thatcher sold off the council houses.
For me it is DEI and the Equality Act 2010 which I believe (until last week) to be the worst piece of legislation ever passed.

Can you explain why?
Tony Blair interfering in Middle Eastern politics and wars, making life more uncertain for all of us.

^As for those who doubt that SKI parents are a serious issue. Just google 'spending the children's inheritance' and see the pages and pages of references from a huge range of sources^.
I really cannot see why that is a serious issue.
I did not expect to inherit anything for my parents and I do not think that is an expectation that my DC have, either.
Everyone has to strive to make the best of themselves and their lives and not expect a cushion of wealth to fall into their lap through no effort of their own.
Agreed, I doubt SKI parents to be a problem at all.

Look at countries like Sweden and Germany who have taken in large numbers of immigrants and the entire nature of their society has changed. Violence is on the rise.
We should have never invited large groups of immigrants into this country. Anything we do now is simply closing the stable door after the horse has bolted.
Utter nonsense ! My son lives in Germany as I did once . I visit often and stay in a hotel in a multi cultural neighbour hood . I never felt unsafe .
I live in Scotland where there is knife crime. Ethnic minorities are not responsible.
SKI parents are not a problem in themselves but they are classic examples of the way that society has changed and people have become self centred and selfish, with no thought beyond themselves - and have brought up a generation to think like them
Maddyone they were questions not statements, as indicated by the use of a question mark.

Here’s what a crook looks like.
The head of Thames Water.
White.
Wealthy.
Privately Educated.
This. The rot always starts at the top, not the bottom. Read the history books from ancient Rome onwards if you need affirmation.
We are constantly told it starts with the plebs and immigrants and the right wing press feeds us a constant diet of this rhetoric It is brainwashing, propaganda and a masterful deflection designed to keep the establishment lining their pockets and committing far more nefarious crimes than we will ever be aware of.
Seven hundred sub postmasters whose lives have been smashed to a thousand pieces. Ordinary, decent people left mentally tortured, physically ill, penniless and homeless and 5 suicides (probably more). Who committed this, the worst miscarriage of justice in living memory? It wasn't ethnic minority single parents last time I checked.
Rivers, lakes and seas strangled with millions of tons of noxious pollutants and sewage. All sanctioned by shareholders rubbing their hands at the financial rewards without a care in the world and fat cat directors on salaries most people could only dream of. Who are these criminals you ask? Ethnic minority single parents, not so much.
Prince Andrew allowed to globe trot at astonishing expense to the taxpayer in the guise of Ambassador for Trade and Industry. Google some of the people he met with. Most of them were the scum of the earth and of no value (or worse) to the people footing his unimaginably extravagant lifestyle. They were only of value to him. Who allowed this grotesque display of immorality? Ethnic minority single parents? Actually, no.
I could go on but I think you will very much find, as I said, the rot always starts at the top of society.
Oh, good post flappergirl.

Agreed.😆
I think it started during the sixties with all the freedom and liberalism. Having little discipline brings out the worst in human nature. We need laws and those laws need to be enforced.
The present government are too soft, they seem afraid to clamp down on criminal behaviour.
Years ago, at least where I come from, people such as doctors, vicars, teachers, policemen and similar were very respected members of the community. Not so nowadays, it seems. In fact, I’m not sure who garners ‘respect’.
Plus even non church goers had a respect for right and wrong, perhaps fearing divine retribution if they did anything really bad.
I think that’s the difference nowadays, people don’t recognise right from wrong.
And do gooders abound, letting them get away with it.

Society is too soft, bad behavior is condoned on every level from top to bottom, individual right comes above individual responsibility. Those of us that can afford it move away from unpleasant areas to the leafy suburbs, leave the problems behind, which just concentrates the deprivation.
Nothing is done to improve the lives of those that need most help, gangs rule the streets, yet parents in those areas do nothing effective to change anything.

Wow!!!
We are what is being described as SKI
parents, first time I’ve been called out for the problems in the U.K.
We spend our money on what and when we like, including providing the deposits for the AC’s first homes, honeymoon of their choice when they married. Three are now working in the family business with the responsibility for day to day running of it.
We go above and beyond on looking after the GC, from overnight stays (so our AC can have time together) school pick-ups, take them on holiday (with and without the AC)
They are now settled and we intend to jolly well enjoy what is left of the rest of our life whilst we are for and able.
How is our lifestyle bringing rack and ruin to society, I would say the opposite. Going by our tax bills we are paying over and above the average OAP….
No one is describing anyone as a SKI parent. But they do exist and it does show a sea change from a time when the desire of almost every parent was to leave their children some money when they die, often depriving themselves of comforts in their last years to do so, to a time when a group of older parents is numerous enough to be given a name and are determined to spend every penny on themselves, and if it means nothing for their children, do not care.
Equally important, they have children who think they have a right to inherit from their parents and would like to restrict their parents expenditure.
No one suggested, at least I didn't, that this is bringing rack and ruin to society. But society, as a whole has become, more selfish. Too often, one person objecting to something can lead to many more being inconvenienced, as their one objection takes priority over the majority.
The point I was trying to make re The Church, before the snipping started was, until relatively recently many people abided by the teachings of The Church.
I was not expressing any point of view for or against nor was I commenting on the morality of the organisation.
I'm being rather slow here. What is the meaning of SKI parent please? ⛷️ ⛷️
Spending Kids Inheritance
M0nica what you have described is lifted straight from media propaganda designed to divide the generations.
You described SKI generation parents as some being selfish and self centred, with no thought beyond themselves
There are many of this generation giving far more back into society then they have ever taken out, just because they are not publicising their charity contributions, volunteering etc.,
Thank you. Silly me, of course it is.

Spending the kids inheritance 😂
BigLouis pointed to the problems starting with mass immigration. I agreed with her views. However one must not say that so the posts were deleted. Neither of us used forbidden words. We didn’t use hate speech. However what is the point of holding a view and being unable to put it forward in debate, even using polite language? No wonder we are where we are.
