The Republic of Ireland and their tensions with migrants.

France encourages them cross the channel, the UK encourages them to cross the Irish Sea or they will go to Rwanda, Ireland can’t repatriate to UK because their courts have said UK is not safe because they will be deported to Rwanda, so Ireland gets the the hump with France and they finally do something to stop the boats.

A solution in the making?

By making entry to the UK illegal without providing safe routes for asylum seekers and refugees the situation has just been made worse. It's been going nearly a year and numbers just go up. Falling into the hands of people smugglers who force people to ditch papers increases. Of course it was different for Ukrainians, its was an arranged scheme.

Why would the genuine ones ditch their papers they wouldn't, its the one's who are not genuine the people smugglers tell to get rid of any ID papers and they also coach them on what to say. Even if there were safe and legal routes the ones refused do you think would just give up no they would still try and get here on the small boats, that's why we need a safe country to send them to like Rwanda as a deterrent. It's naive to think otherwise in my opinion. Also all this talk from Labour about we have to smash the smuggling gangs well don't you think that's what had been happening but it such big business even if you managed to take down one gang another one would take its place.

I also think the big increase this week coming over on the boats is because the gangs are getting them over before the Rwanda scheme gets into operation and hopefully their customers will dry up. Wishful thinking perhaps but I've got my fingers crossed🤞

Have you actually witnessed people smugglers offering their services? How do you know what they tell people?

Why is Rwanda a deterrent if it's such a wonderful place (as some people claim)?

This is what the eu is supporting in Libya. I’m sure these poor souls would rather be in Rwanda.

What is the point of the UN?

No-one has answered that in any meaningful way.

Not just Libya, the EU are supporting refugee camps in Turkey as well, $9 billion so far, the aim being that they can return to Syria when it is safe.

I said the UN, not EU.

Sorry I should have linked Petra’s post

As for the UN they are humanitarian which solves nothing, where the do deploy peacekeeping forces it achieves nothing in many cases.

petra Fri 03-May-24 11:51:48

UNMigration obviously consider Rwanda safe as they have sent Afghan girls there to finish their education.
There’s only two ways to look at this.
Rwanda is safe, or, it’s not but it’s ok for Afghan girls.

Visit Rwanda tourist board is advertised on at least three top flight football teams. Arsenal here in the U.K., Bayern Munich in Germany and Paris St-Germain in France.

Some of the activities available in Rwanda for tourists are Primate Trek and Safari (including Gorillas), Cultural and Historical Trip, Lakeside Vacation, Mountain Gorilla Treks, Bird watching, game drives and many more…

Katie59 Fri 03-May-24 14:05:30

Rwanda is safe it hosts a lot of environmental tourism and safari tours, you can hire a 4x4 and drive yourself safely without problems.
That does not mean that sending our migrants there to be processed is a good idea.

I am in shock! I have just seen footage of hundreds of migrants being dropped off outside the most fantastic country hotel in Ireland. It is absolutely luxurious and the reporter said few people can afford to stay there.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 03-May-24 17:09:21

I have no words.

Oreo Fri 03-May-24 20:10:33

Wow, from tents there to luxury 😄
I can see ROI being the new go to destination from now on.

Urmstongran Fri 03-May-24 20:39:04

Well that’ll show ‘em ‘we mean business’.

I agree.

Some (not all) do have a poor reputation internationally, too.

Which hotel is that, in which town, Primrose ? and where did you see the footage?

Well there you go but sure somebody will object to the newspaper chosen. The report is in others.

It names CityWest Hotel.

this the same CityWest hotel, Dublin, used by refugees since Ukraine? As in

www.echo.ie/e34m-received-by-owners-of-citywest-hotel-for-facilities/

"Citywest Hotel has been closed to the public since March 2020, when lockdowns started and the HSE began to use it as a self-isolation facility and field hospital.

The convention centre has been used as a transit hub run where asylum seekers and Ukranians are processed before being moved to other accommodation in Dublin and across the country."

Or are there 2 City West hotels?

Wyllow3 Sat 04-May-24 17:41:50

Ah - found it - pix, history etc

In January 2024

“Already there is a two-year lease in place at the Citywest hotel in Dublin which serves as a reception centre and can house up to 2,000 people.”

Oh no! It seems the truth got in the way of a good story!

Still plenty of dollar for Citywest.

Wyllow3 Sat 04-May-24 18:07:50

In looking around I had had no idea about the tent city in Dublin - I had had no idea what was happening in the ROI.
On U tube there are loads of videos with very different POV from citizens in ROI - demonstrations from both POV etc.

Somehow, I don't think they will get 5-star food or service.

MaizieD Sat 04-May-24 20:57:32

I can't see them indulging in a round or two of golf, either.

I also suspect that the leisure facilities won't be open to them.

Farmor15 Sat 04-May-24 23:06:14

Only some of those in the "tent city" which was cleared were accommodated in Citywest. There was no room for others who have set up another camp.

Over 50 tents set up along Dublin's Grand Canal by asylum seekers, including Palestinians jrnl.ie/6371808

They'll still have food and shelter.
