Breaking news, just now.

The far left have given Michael Foot and Corbyn as leaders

Iam64 Sat 01-Jun-24 18:54:14

I was a fan/supporter if Michael Foot. I believed he had integrity and like his socialism, politics.
I still feel the same about Foot. The 1983 election taught me that my idealism was definitely not shared by the majority.

I was at three leadership hustings when Corbyn won. He got loudest applause. I knew we’d never win an election with him as leader. I also doubted his leadership abilities. I voted Yvette Cooper and Andy Burnham
Often wonder how much healthier and happier our country would be if either of them had won

Glorianny Sat 01-Jun-24 18:54:51

Diane Abbott never "briefed that she was going to be banned". The Times picked up on the fact that she was still denied the whip and sitting as an Independent. Starmer had also consistently said the matter was not resolved and refused to restore the whip. Even when Diane Abbott was subjected to racist abuse by a conservative donor. www.shropshirestar.com/news/uk-news/2024/03/14/keir-starmer-dampens-hopes-of-imminent-return-of-labour-whip-to-diane-abbott/
We know now that she completed the required course at the end of February and the whips office knew that.
Starmer's treatment of her reveals a level of vindictiveness no leader of the Labour party should exhibit.

The far left have to cling to the Abbott saga,

LizzieDrip Sat 01-Jun-24 19:10:17

Glorianny I’d like to ask you a question because I genuinely want to know … do you want the Labour Party, led by KS, to win this election or not?

Casdon Sat 01-Jun-24 19:10:38

Glorianny, she did brief that she was going to be banned. Those were her exact words, here she is using them.

SWP at work?

nightowl Sat 01-Jun-24 19:44:01

Oh here we go again. Anyone on the left who dares to criticise the leadership must be a Marxist. These threads always go the same way.

Wyllow3 Sat 01-Jun-24 19:52:15

It was tongue in cheek 💁

I'm always just completely confused that some people on the far left seem more concerned with attacking those on the left centre, rather than who we are actually standing against at an election. Lizzie asked a really important question

We have had so many year of Conservative austerity and its effects are felt by all of us who rely on NHS or social care and struggle daily - the "Enemy" is not Starmer for goodness sake.

Iam64 Sat 01-Jun-24 19:57:49

It’s a mystery to me, this Purist approach. I’m not saying don’t ever criticise the leadership but it sometimes feels like warfare. That Starmer is more of an enemy than Sunak

It confuses me too Wyllow, which is why I asked the question. During an election campaign, why don’t the left put time and energy into fighting the real opposition - the Conservatives! I just don’t get it … unless they don’t actually want Labour to win!

Yes. I, too, supported Michael Foot. I’ve got a letter from him somewhere. I learned a lot from that. Good MP’s like him don’t seem to see any evil in others but they need to. And politics is even tougher and dirtier now.

Wyllow3 Sat 01-Jun-24 20:04:07

I've been in the Labour Party for years and when Corbyn stood I didn't agree with his policy stands as I felt they were completely unrealistic, based on an idealism not political realities.

But I went out and campaigned for him as did all my branch despite reservations. What we didn't do is stand on the sidelines and snipe at length. We put the arguments against oven ready Boris J.

We hung in there to see what would happen and waited for a chance to democratically vote for the next Labour Leader. Whatever party you are in there will be strong disagreements: but at election time you stand up for your party.

We have seen on the Right that eventually there has been a split with Reform because the disagreements couldn't be resolved.

nightowl Sat 01-Jun-24 20:08:10

I think those on the left feel it works the other way - the party doesn’t want them, or their efforts, it just wants them to disappear and is doing a good job of helping them on their way.

Iam64 Sat 01-Jun-24 20:15:01

Wyllow3same here. We didn’t stand in the sidelines, sniping and undermining. We knocked doors, made phone calls did the best we could with the negative comments about Corbyn.
This comradeship seems beyond many who see Starmer as not left enough

Anniebach Sat 01-Jun-24 20:19:22

nightowl Abbott is of the left, what did she achieve this week for Labour by acting on claims in a newspaper of the right ?

pascal30 Sat 01-Jun-24 20:25:00

I'm delighted to learn that my Labour candidate actually lives in my constituency and has beaten Eddie Izzard to become the candidate.. He looks very sound and I shall be happy voting for him now that Caroline Lucas has stepped down..

nightowl Sat 01-Jun-24 20:25:33

I don’t think there’s any more to be said about Diane Abbott Anniebach. There are those of all political persuasions who feel she has been treated badly by the leadership, and those who feel she has been playing games to disrupt the campaign. There are some who feel she is confused and being manipulated by others and there are some who feel she knows exactly what she is doing and is seeking some kind of revenge for what the party did to Corbyn. Nothing I or anyone else says is likely to change anyone’s point of view.

I think you’ve missed a couple of words nightowl. What the party doesn’t want or need is ‘their efforts’ to dominate and disrupt. That is what they do, and that is exactly what has been the curse of the party for years.

Anniebach Sat 01-Jun-24 20:34:04

Thank you nightowl, I truly was interested in your views on
Abbott’s motives/reasons

LizzieDrip Sat 01-Jun-24 20:37:14

nightowl why would any party want, or need, members who are intent on disruption during an election campaign. As Wyllow and Iam say, the right thing to do, for the party and the country, is to pull together to try to achieve success. Win the election … then air your differences.

What has she achieved for Labour anyway recently?
She’s an albatross round Starmer’s neck. She and Corbyn did massive harm to Labour’s chances, she fluffed every tv and radio appearance and he was just the same dismal Corbyn he always was.Starmer is the only hope the Labour Party has of gaining power.

I really resent this you shouldn't criticise. It is the absolute antithesis of what a democratic party should be.
If someone has to win I want it to be Labour. However I have deep and well founded doubts about how much good Labour under Starmer will do. I don't see in him the dedicated commitment I see in other Labour politicians. I see instead someone willing to abandon any ideals if it seems to be politically expedient. And I find that worrying.

Of course the Tories are the enemy the problem is that many of us see Starmer as Tory-lite. I hope I am wrong. I hope he will save social care and the NHS but I fear that he will not, because he hasn't the will to do so. Criticising me because I do not see any party has the real interests of those most in need at its core isn't really fair, and I doubt very much if my posts on GN are going to lose the election for Starmer.

nightowl Sat 01-Jun-24 21:37:26

Anniebach I don’t pretend to understand DA’s thoughts or motives. I think it’s clear she’s been unwell. I believe her heart is Labour through and through and prefer to believe her motives are genuine, and I think she would have been extremely hurt at her perceived exclusion from the party. I’m glad KS made the decision he did, whatever the reasons.
