Hmm.
Standing as a Reform MP after all?
Emigrating to America to canvass for Trump?
Joining the Tory party?
None of the above?

I shall tune in out of curiosity.

He has had an enormous impact on the politics of this country, people can pretend otherwise if they want and am sure will be as surprised when the next Brexit type surprise comes down the line.

I don't think that Farage is in the least bit interested in improving the lives of most people in the Clacton area, is he, growstuff? 😆

I just looked up Jaywick, which I knew nothing about. I expected it to be a town similar in size to Clacton, but it’s not, it’s less than one tenth as big, only 5000 people live there - so a large village size really.

Exactly! It's an enclave of the constituency, which gives the wider area a bad name, but actually it's a textbook example of "haves" and "have nots". There are more "haves", which is why it's so solidly Conservative.

There's no pretence about how I judge his influence, Galaxy.

I think poor Jaywick was originally intended to be another seaside holiday destination, but it didn't really make it. There's nothing there for its inhabitants. I have seen old people from my home town reminisce on social media about what a nice place it was 50+ years ago.

We always went to Walton., it was very easy to get to by train, as were Clacton, Frinton and Brightlingsea.

Somehow we are on page 7

and I am none the wiser about Reform/Farage policies except for immigration being central to Farage

- and I have no idea what magic solution he has for even that.

Grannynannywanny Mon 03-Jun-24 21:44:41

Here he is on reality tv programme I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here last year boasting about his lavish lifestyle and power as an MEP. Chauffeur driven cars, 300 euros a day spending allowance, crab and lobster for dinner every day if he wanted it. Yes, he’s definitely a “man of the people” who will have much in common with his constituents 🤢

Either the wealth of mps is important or it isnt. If his wealth is important then so is Sunaks and Starmers. None of their personal wealth is of the slightest interest to me.

I know. And who exactly are ‘the establishment’ that they’re against; what is it that ‘the establishment’ does that Reform are going to Reform?

Jaywick started off as an escape for East Enders. People could buy plots of lands (hence "plotlands") and build themselves structures with minimum planning regs. The fresh sea air must have seemed like bliss to people used to the polluted London air. That's why many of the houses in Jaywick still resemble beach huts with some extra amenities, such as electricity and plumbing. The roads weren't "adopted", so they're poorly maintained and the local authority didn't give any thought to insisting on the public amenities one would expect in any community. Clacton itself, like other seaside towns, has become a dumping ground for the homeless from other authorities.

Being "anti-establishment" is a well-rehearsed battle cry from both sides of the political spectrum. Sorry to mention this, but the Nazis did exactly the same, which is why they appealed to right and left wing voters.

But Farage isn't an MP. He seems to have acquired wealth from being the human equivalent of a flea.

MayBee70 Mon 03-Jun-24 22:06:52

Isn’t being an ex banker very ‘establishment’? I suppose he’ll be talking about ‘ draining the swamp’ soon. I see he’s still appearing in pubs but has dropped the cigarettes.

Susiewong65 Mon 03-Jun-24 22:06:59

Farage is an opportunist who loves the limelight.
He brings nothing to the party and unfortunately the press will give him lots of ‘airtime’ as they seem to love these characters.

Wyllow3 Mon 03-Jun-24 22:09:37

Perhaps a Reform supporter could give me a link to policy outlines on the central areas being discussed atm? so at least I now what they stand for in some detail. NHS? Social Care? Management of the economy? Pro Truss economics?

The only one I did pick up was that they are climate change deniers, they want to abolish net zero.

He may mean the EU, IMF, WHO, various financiers??

Or he may just mean Labour and the Tories?!

fancythat Mon 03-Jun-24 22:16:35

Their website is about economy, energy, public services and institutions. Those are the headlines that I can see.

Farage isn't an ex-banker. He's an ex metal markets trader, which isn't the same thing at all.

Galaxy Mon 03-Jun-24 22:29:08

Right so if he does become an MP in the future his wealth wont be important? It's just now whilst he isnt an MP?
I am not a reform supporter and what happens in this election with regard to them is irrelevant, it's what happens after the election that will matter. But I am sure it will be very puzzling to everyone when reform (if you're lucky it will be reform it may in fact be something way worse than reform) become the opposition.

growstuff Mon 03-Jun-24 22:33:51

I couldn't care less about Farage's wealth. I care more about the mugs who have provided it (but maybe I don't - they're adults - and they can do what they like with their money).

Why not call the party The BNP and have done. Horrid little man. Richard Tice is standing in my area (Boston & Skegness) and there's a lot of support for him on FB. Not from me! Connections to the KKK, I mean, you couldn't make this up!

Thank you for this link, NoraBone. It just confirms what I thought about him. I wish more people would take a look at the link.

Heck, everyone should read this link! Really shocking! and tries to explain away the anti semitism and fascism later.

LucyAnna2 Tue 04-Jun-24 00:26:51

Dear god - viewing of that link should be mandatory. Quite shocking.
