At least you had the advantage of speaking French, pascal30, if I assume correctly. It's ridiculous how many Brits go to live in France but can't be bothered to master the language.

Do you think Macron is paving the way for the next president, keeping in mind he cannot stand a third period?
He knew how people were thinking, especially after the European elections, therefore, thought it would be better to go to the polls sooner rather than later, while he was still in charge and be able to have some control although limited.
Marie Le Pen thinks her party's 28-year-old leader will have a say over France’s armed forces and the president's powers would be reduced.

Ha ha ha! The left alliance first, Macron party second and Le Pen / Bardella 3rd! It will still be a coalition government.
Phew!!
Mamie

Is that the result? What a huge relief! I

It is the predicted outcome, but these polls are normally very accurate because of the way the system works.
Good-oh. Makes life a lot easier for everyone else in Europe
It said on our news that there was a 60% turnout by 5pm, so by the time the polls closed presumably somewhat higher - the threat of the right must have galvanised the electorate into action.
That is what I was thinking casdon .
There has been a lot of agreement of third parties dropping out to promote tactical voting in a straight two candidate race.
Also posters saying, remember 1940 and similar sentiments.
It will be messy but essentially I think Macron's gamble has paid off.
I just put it on the wrong thread ( 100 Days)
Good news isn’t it that France has gone to the left, the new popular front, I know it’s only the exit poll but looking good.
Pretty amazing really - he is a better politician than perhaps people give him credit for.
Starmer will be pleased.

There is a large divide between those living in cities or large towns and those living in the countryside. When we moved to rural Suffolk we only ever saw white faces whereas in Ipswich there are about 10 ethnic minorities living in and around the town.
In London in the 60s and 70s there was a wide range of food shops and restaurants of other nations which were enjoyed by everyone.
Why do you make " only ever saw white faces" sound like a resounding insult. We are a majority white country. If you went to rural Africa, as I did, you would only ever see black faces, as I would expect.
Vive La France!!

It doesn't sound like an insult at all. It sounds like a fact. At much the same period in NE Essex we very rarely saw anything but a white face, too.
It's the same in the part of the NE (Durham) where I live today.
All factual, no insults... You are too ready to be offended...
Oh, also I'm pleased to hear the prediction for today's voting in France. 🤞
Indeed a majority white country. A minority racist country too, at the moment.
Vive La France Liberté, égalité, fraternité
Good news
Just back from counting and out of 214, 200 were for backing the President.
So glad the Media got it wrong. 3rd place for Marie Le Penn
I’m pleased with this result.

Ridiculous how many people come to live here and never learn the language. Still we do provide interpreters at no cost to the immigrants, believe they have to pay for them in France.

Not offended, just amazed that people seem to think it's wrong that you only see white faces, or are amazed by it.
A cause for celebration in France tonight!

It's not a question of can't be bothered, rather than a question of where we live.
Many Brits, including myself and DH live in the countryside. our nearest neighbours are 100 plus metres away. Out of the 7 houses around us, 3 of them are holiday homes. Two are occupied by elderly people and the other two by people out at work all day. In a rural area like ours the elderly often don't want to mix with incomers tend to socialise with their families.
If you live in a town or village you would have immediate neighbours whom you would probably see most days which make it easier to just pass the time of day. The English people that I know who are the best at speaking French live in the middle of our village or similar villages. All the French people that we do know are incomers.
If you move to a village in England the best way in which to get to know people is by having children in the local school and/or by going to church. When we lived in Suffolk we did neither of those things. We met people by my DH volunteering to build sets for the local am dram group after having been to their annual performance not long after we moved in.
