Is no one else worried about the implications?

GrannyGravy13 Wed 03-Jul-24 18:12:57

I am terrified.

LucyAnna2 Wed 03-Jul-24 18:14:32

What do you feel the implications will be, kittylester, that we should worry about?

Siope Wed 03-Jul-24 18:17:20

Genuine question: why is it terrifying? How is it different to having a 30 or 50 seat majority?

MissAdventure Wed 03-Jul-24 18:17:29

No, I'm not at all worried.

LizzieDrip Wed 03-Jul-24 18:18:59

No, not worried at all. Why would it be worrying? Was anyone worried when Johnson had an 80 seat majority in 2019?

Daz57 Wed 03-Jul-24 18:19:04

I am scared not least as he is going to tax pensioners hard. According to his advisers.

If Labour get in with a so called super majority they cannot be held to account by the opposition.

They will have carte blanche to do as they please.

A strong and capable opposition is an asset to Westminster.

Casdon Wed 03-Jul-24 18:20:26

I’d be very surprised if that happens. I think it’s being hyped up by the media and the Tories, so when the Tories get more seats than predicted they will be able to salvage some dignity.

It’s based on the multitude of polls taken since the election was called.

Also, there is no such thing as a super majority, that’s a myth the Tories have dreamed up. A comfortable majority of 40 plus seats has exactly the same impact on parliamentary business as a majority of 100+ does - and of course what did the Tories have in 2019?

I know - and the undecideds will affect it.

Not worried at all

Siope Wed 03-Jul-24 18:31:30

There is no such thing as a supermajority in British politics.

I agree that a good opposition is needed but good doesn’t necessarily equal large.

Merion Wed 03-Jul-24 18:33:06

Agreed. No such thing as a supermajority in UK governance. Said to be something Shapps came up with which Sunak has then adopted as a slogan.

I concede I should have put large majority

Siope Wed 03-Jul-24 18:38:31

The IFG article, on how the Tories have systematically undermined Parliamentary scrutiny, and noting that the important question to ask of Labour whether they will restore it, is very good.

Callistemon213 Wed 03-Jul-24 18:41:29

Well, if some voters in Wales , just interviewed on ITV, are anything to go by it's anyone's guess!
Shown a picture of Keir Starmer, one man said "Starman, is it?", another said "Who is he?" and two older ladies said "Never heard of him".

Oh dear.

Merion Wed 03-Jul-24 18:46:20

Quoting from the linked article:

In reality, apart from the HR problems created for the opposition leader, in parliamentary terms the difference between an 80-seat and 200-seat majority is not material – the most significant factor for democracy is the attitude a government takes to the role of parliament and the value of scrutiny.

[In 2019] Boris Johnson secured a much larger majority and immediately adopted the attitude that nobody should be able to oppose his parliamentary plans. His ministers refused to entertain even the smallest amendments to bills and some were extremely reluctant to appear before select committees. He was free with the creation of new ministerial powers and their exercise – using secondary legislation to pass numerous measures without the possibility of parliamentary opposition.

It’s rich for Sunak to complain about something that under Johnson, with him as Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Tory party saw fit to exploit undemocratically.

Starmer is unlikely to behave in the same undemocratic manner.

I’m not in the least scared. A neighbour challenged me about my Labour campaign poster. He said ‘they’ll put our council tax up ‘“. They’ve just returned from a 5* 3 week cruise. He, like me, can afford a bit more to help our council deliver services.
I’d be terrified if we were facing another 80 seat Tory majority. Our public services are devastated. I’m more confident Labour will attempt repair -its clear the tories would continue to destroy and privatise

I couldn’t put it better myself 👏👏👏

I actually think, at this difficult time, a hung Parliament would have been good.
But that’s not going to happen.

I think quite a lot of people were concerned about that.

Galaxy Wed 03-Jul-24 18:56:56

Yes I was worried about the size of Johnsons majority and the same applies to Labour.

growstuff Wed 03-Jul-24 19:02:06

I'm not the slightest bit worried.

I'm more worried that some voters might think it's a foregone conclusion and not vote.

If Labour really gets about twice as many votes as the Conservatives, it just goes to show the feeling against the Conservative Party. It's called democracy - like the result of the referendum, people will just have to live with it.
