I’d like to feel optimistic that things will improve I really would - I was pleased Blair got in in 97, but this feels different some how?
I’m kind of dreading the next - god knows how many years - under Labour.
Oh well.

You don’t live here, do you? They’re leaving your country to come here.
As you know full well I live in France since i've mentioned it often enough on here.
France had 142,500 requests for asylum in 2023. Not all accepted. There are tougher new laws brought in because of protests from the extreme right.
Germany had just under 352,000 asylum applications in 2023.
Italy too has large numbers of immigrants . Over 150,000 in 2023. They too are getting tougher because of pressure from the extreme right.
I suppose you think that all immigrants should be forced to stay in Italy which is the first stop for those arriving from N Africa.
This is not the way to deal with it. It will be on the increase for all the richer countries because of the way in which the poorer countries are affected by climate change - they cannot feed themselves.
We all know, should know, that immigration will increase and it will need a global effort to deal with it. The EU have been consulting its members on ways to deal with the problem for a number of years.
Farage was an MEP for 18 years. He has one of the worst records for attendance, ranking 748th out of 751. Had he attended more frequently, he could have possibly put his supposed intelligence to good use when the EU discussed migrants.

Considering that the UK birthrate has been dropping since 2010 then the migrants are just filing the gap
PS and they won't need educating nor will they be a strain on the health system, because they are healthy. It is the elderly and old that are one of the causes of the strain.
Furthermore. many doctors, nurses and care workers have gone back to their original countries following Brexit.
Funnily enough I had an examination by a Rumanian doctor earlier this week. His English was very good.
We don’t need to fill the gap with unknown people who may or may have skills we need. Those who don’t simply add to the problem. They take rather than give, and we have enough takers already.

I presume you mean may or may not.
It is like getting a job lot of something[cant think of a better way of putting it for now], and hoping 50 out of 500 are what we are looking for.
The old immigration system, prior to 1995 or 2010, or whenever it was, worked perfectly well, previously.
This is not the way to deal with it. It will be on the increase for all the richer countries because of the way in which the poorer countries are affected by climate change - they cannot feed themselves.
I agree that mass migration to Europe is not the way to deal with what is happening in some African countries with drought, the inability to grow food and consequent famine.
However, the food issue is far more complex than that.
Most countries import food and Africa has some of the most fertile lands on Earth.
The problem is that civil wars, terrorist groups, poor land management and the problems with the logistics of getting food to those in need because of the wars and terrorism is causing people to flee. As well as the threats of these wars and of terrorism.
There is also a problem in some countries with lack of birth control, women having to bear more children than they can possibly feed.
It is hugely complex and there is no simple fix.

Farage will find time to grandstand, whether in the Parliamentary chamber or outside it.
Farage is a stupid man. He is one of lifes disrupters, not a person to take responsibility, not a person to work with other people or put anybody elses interest ahead of his own. He is in many ways another Boris, loves strirring up he cr*p, but not interested in clearing it up.
He is in every way a clown, never happier than when performing in a public place while everyone stands round and claps him and urges him on.M0nica I often enjoy reading your posts but on this you are very wrong.
NF is NOT stupid - look at what he has achieved in just under a month. I caught half of his speech this afternoon and he quite rightly pointed out that he speaks from the heart and doesn’t need notes. Starmer in his speech today had to look at his notes something like 120 times!
NF took on Brexit and won. He fought for the Post Office scandal and he took on the Banks and won there too. Where were all the others? They couldn’t care less.
Obviously you dislike him but millions do like him. Reform is the most followed party on social media by young people. His rally at Birmingham was sold out with 5,000 people at very short notice. Wherever he speaks, people turn up and listen. He is a great orator and he can get on with people from all walks of life.
I will remind you of your words in just a few months.😉
I totally agree with you, Primrose and you have put it much more eloquently than I could…..👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nigel Farage might be many things, but he is definitely not stupid.
They’ve got 5 MP’s and they’ve only been a party for 5 minutes.
That’s very impressive. The Reform party have had a very successful campaign that’s for sure.

And they only had a few weeks to get it together I think they’ve done very well and I’m pleased that they have 5 MP’s I read it was four…(excellent if it is five) 🤓
Farage can be called a great many things but stupid is not one of them.

Very true. I wouldn’t vote for him but I’m grateful to those who did.

Some went home, many stayed, some went home to families when pandemic broke out.
Sooner Farage, for this country, than the Islamists elected, and Corbyn, whose only thoughts are Palestine. Who would have thought we would let sectarian politics become the norm.

Sunak did not have to call a snap July election, a month ago Reform did not seem a credible threat, he probably thought they would not get their act together quickly enough.
He was wrong!

Shinamae do you know what Reform actually stands for, apart from eliminating all immigration? Do you support their proposals for the NHS and climate issues. They haven’t really said much about anything else!
Reform now has 5 mp’s. In many areas, they split the Tory vote, allowing a Labour win. As LizzieDrip says, other than ‘stopping the boats’ in a way as yet unexplained, what do they believe in? He’s a disrupter appealing to angry disaffected people
Farage denies wanting to privatise the NHS. He speaks positively of Andrew Taite, suggesting this dangerous misogynist abuser, is a necessary role model for our young men.
So many of his supporters have been outed as racists.
Immigration has been raised by voters consistently. I hope the Reform vote was in part a vote of no confidence in the Conservatives. If the Conservatives can rebuild their party in the way Starmer has in the last 4 years.

Doom hardly comes close. Mr G and I have been stockpiling the paracetamol and the alcohol, we will just have to end it all when it becomes too dreadful to contemplate or bear.

Good grief, I assume you have lived through as many changes of government as I have, I got the vote in 1964 and I have never voted for either of the major parties
I have just lived through various governments and have just watched them all being pretty much the same, a little lurch to the right with the Conservaatives, a small lurch to the left with labour, but nothing disastrous or frightening, until the lot that have just been quite justly chucked out.
In the end all of them are constrained by world events, whether financial, military, or cultural, and had to trim their sails to international winds.
I can see nothing in the new government to frighten anyone. For once we have a Prime Minister with a long and successful career before he entered politics, who has quietly turned round a totally unelectable party under Corbyn, into an electaable one under him. Which suggests he will not be a pushover if the left get restive.
The thing to worry about is, is how long is it going to take the Conservatives to rebuild themselves. I can see no one in their ranks of the calibre of Starmer. As someone said on the radio today, The Conservatives used to run on having in their midst big political beasts (think Kenneth Clark, Michael Heseltine) who could support the leader and keep the troops under control. Now the party has become a petting zoo, which is incapable of any leadership at all.
Fancy thinking of devastating and destroying your family just because you do not like the government. I will end as I started. Good grief!
Was your post in jest, gulligranny? I really hope so. If not, what do you really think is the worst that might happen? I hate to think of anyone being as worried as that, and I’m sure there’s no need.
….I don’t think she was being serious…..
….anyway, I’m ok cause I’m still working my way through my covid stockpile.
