Labour win a historic victory

The plasterers working in my house yesterday and today said they didn’t vote.

What’s the point, they’re all liars anyway was their verdict. And then they got on with the plastering.

And the media love it.
Gives them more column inches.

Labour have won, I now wait and see what they intend to do and how they will do it.

A worrying thing for me is four Independents got elected on a so called Gaza ticket, I find this just as worrying, if not more so than four Reform MP’s being elected.

I find this worrying too, although there are only four of them.
Starmer will be under a lot of pressure to recognise Palestine as a state, much as Norway and Spain have done, because the pressure will not only come from these four Independents, it will come from inside his party too.

Congratulations from me to Labour too. A resounding majority. I truly wish them well. Of course I do! It’s in all our interests as a nation that we thrive and prosper - in all sections of society. We need the NHS to work better. I hope they don’t just throw money at the behemoth. It too needs change and reshaping.

P.s. I’m glad Reform Uk got 4 seats - same at the Greens.
And I’m glad the Lib Dem’s (nice as they are - I especially like Daisy Cooper) are not the opposition party.

I think Lammy, Butler and Ashworth lost their seats. Yvette Cooper too. I’m glad about the first 3.

I am sorry that Jonathon Ashworth lost his seat. He always struck me as calm intelligent and articulate.

Only to ben expected after Conservatives dire performance lately, no party should have Truss, Gove or Cummings in it, glad Grey gone to, now they must rebuild they have lots of time.
Don't like or trust Starmer but he's been elected so must wait and see if he bucks the trend of labour by expecting the few to pay for the ever increasing many and the borrowing begins. Very concerned about immigration. Would advise anyone considering early retirement to take it.

So glad you’re back

As a lifelong Labour supporter, I am of course thrilled at the result. However, neither my DH or I feel the same euphoria that accompanied Tony Blair’s win. I think we realise what a mountain awaits the new government in putting right the 14 years of Tory government and realise how hamstrung they will be by the economic circumstances prevailing. There is also the feeling that the nation is so divided. I fear Reform and their policies, and although their large share of the vote was a protest against the Tories they now have a bigger platform to spew their extreme views.

I think, though, that my litte corner of the world voted for independent candidates?

I can understand a youngster or someone disenchanted after the last 14 years voting Reform as the promises seem so simple and clear "turn the boats back to French beaches" etc etc
its just that they never could have worked.

I hope the opposition rebuilds as middle ground Conservatives so that working together on committees etc are not fraught with constant division.

I don't see why you should be worried since the Independents won't have any power. Nor will they get much chance to speak. They will be 4 out of 650.

Doctors and others in the health service taking early retirement are one reason why there are long waiting lists.

Because their supporters are drowning out democratically elected female MPs when they speak.

I don't see why you should be worried since the Independents won't have any power. Nor will they get much chance to speak. They will be 4 out of 650.

I know they will not have much clout in Parliament.

It’s the trend which concerns me, if we as a country go for proportional representation, which many on here and in the real world are advocating for, Reform would have many more sears than four.

Our extended family member lost their blue seat by a very small margin.

My constituency stayed Conservative but with a much reduced majority, Lib Dem in second place and OH and I both voted tactically for them as Labour was a no hope. I'm pleased Labour has a good majority but it's going to be tough going, they face many more problems than TB did. If we had PR we'd have a very fragmented coalition type of government. I used to think it would be better as tbh my vote never really counts but now I'm really not sure. PR governments so easily end up with the tail wagging the dog! I am just hoping that this government can start to rebuild people's interest and trust in politics and social media is better controlled, no wonder the younger voters say they vote Reform, SM is packed with fake news generated by goodness knows who!
