I just had to see that headlining a thread.

We’ve waited so long for this. Let’s spend a day enjoying it before all the problems start to crown in.

I do wonder where Starmer will get all the money from for his plans. Although they have promised the triple lock will stay on pensions I think that will go fairly soon. Many non Dom's have left the country so that source of revenue won't be there either.

It’s the trend which concerns me, if we as a country go for proportional representation, which many on here and in the real world are advocating for, Reform would have many more sears than four

That's just the same argument that was being used a few years ago; just substitute' Ukip' for 'Reform'. Therecwas lots of shuddering at the thought of Ukip gaining seats in (low) double figures, but may be it would have been a good thing, in that people wouldn't have then felt unrepresented. Ukip would have been drawn into the common 'they're all liars', 'they're in it for themselves' etc. discourse because they would have been viewed as just another part of the Westminster 'establishment' rather than bold, daring, rebels on the outside of mainstream, victimised for their views. They'd have been no more interesting than the Greens or the Lib Dems..
Reform is basically the same party.

Time to go, dear!

JaneJudge Fri 05-Jul-24 11:16:57

Yvette Cooper is still an MP, she won her seat in Pontefract and Castleford

Photo didn’t work.

Grrrrr!

I’ll be surprised if Labour would choose PR, when they’ve just won an election on FPTP.
Asking for PR is usually a small party tactic.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 05-Jul-24 11:31:26

Just watching the change over - what a peaceful contrast to the frantic scenes we saw in the USA.

Wyllow3 Fri 05-Jul-24 11:32:10

Problem with PR is the decision which sort and changeover process. (tho lots of L Party members support it).

It would take a huge amount of parliamentary time and conflicts and now is definitely not right to spend months on it.

(I know that begs the question, "is there ever a good time", but its not now)

I agree,

The Party that won without i,t is not going to be the one that wants PR.

That’s Scottish Independence done for. Just as voters in England were fed up with the Conservatives so too were those in Scotland with the SNP, giving Labour victory.

Why on earth was Nicola Sturgeon asked to be part of the ITV panel? Seemed very inappropriate.

Yes, I thought that as well. She looked uncomfortable most of the time.

Galaxy Fri 05-Jul-24 12:16:24

Well she was part of its downfall so I imagine that would be uncomfortable to realise.

Cath9 Fri 05-Jul-24 12:26:19

What is going to cost a lot is for those having to change from gas central heating to electrical heating. Where the cost will be a lot and the amount of windmills that will be all over the UK

ronib Fri 05-Jul-24 13:00:33

Why does Keir Starmer keep saying that he’s working class? First lie on day one!

I wondered that as well.

I assume she could have said no.

merlotgran Fri 05-Jul-24 13:11:08

Why is Keir Starmer’s wife referred to as Lady Victoria? Surely it should be Lady Starmer unless her father was an Earl and the title is hers?

maddyone Fri 05-Jul-24 13:12:05

Keir Starmer is not working class, nor is Angela Rayner. By definition, working class people work with their hands. They are both middle class because of their occupations.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 05-Jul-24 13:12:24

He obviously thinks that if he says it often enough some people will believe it.

I agree, it’s either Victoria or Lady Starmer.

Somebody needs to brush up on titles

M0nica Fri 05-Jul-24 13:24:11

This wholeobsession with class is loopy. It doesn't exist. The only deliniator now is money. Whether you are very poor, poor, managing, confortable very comfortable rich, or extremely rich, matters far more than than how oyur parents earned their wage.

maddyone Fri 05-Jul-24 13:26:19

Well Starmer wants to reform The House of Lords, so does that mean those with honours will lose those honours? So Starmer will lose his title? I don’t think he’ll be happy to do that!

maddyone Fri 05-Jul-24 13:28:05

I don’t agree Monica, and the very fact that we have Lords and Ladies and Sirs and so on shows that we have a class based society. We always have done, and it’s not changing any time soon.

maddyone Fri 05-Jul-24 13:30:10

Incidentally, when I studied this during my higher education, I learnt it’s nothing to do with how our parents earned their income, except for dependent children, but how we earn our income.
Therefore, Starmer is not working class.
