I just had to see that headlining a thread.

We’ve waited so long for this. Let’s spend a day enjoying it before all the problems start to crown in.

A low turn out then only 35% of that is not a resounding victory, FPTP doesnt work, we need more proportional representation. Reform got more votes than Lib Dems/ 4 seats and 71 seats is a ridiculous situation.

This wholeobsession with class is loopy. It doesn't exist. The only deliniator now is money. Whether you are very poor, poor, managing, confortable very comfortable rich, or extremely rich, matters far more than than how oyur parents earned their wage.

But it does exist so we may as well get it right not dismiss everything as nonsense unless it’s part of the celebrity culture.

Lady Vic sounds like a hair removal gadget.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jul-24 13:35:51

Who cares what class he is or you are or anyone is, apart from on gransnet?

Wyllow3 Fri 05-Jul-24 13:36:28

Labours actual plans to reform the HoL to clarify on posts above

Starmer obviously cares very much about class MissA. He’s obsessed with it.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jul-24 13:45:33

So are people on here, it seems.

It’s more about respect than obsession.

Spottybook

Agree , even though it was obviously going to happen feeling very depressed today

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jul-24 13:52:35

Respect is what I think Starmer is offering, to everyone.

His speech said as much.

Whether he'll deliver I've no idea, but it'll do for me.

Galaxy Fri 05-Jul-24 13:53:09

Thank God someone is talking about class and poverty. The labour party for a while seemed to forget it was an issue.

winterwhite Fri 05-Jul-24 14:24:11

In the previous 3-4 elections the issue of share of votes versus share of seats adversely affected the Lib Dems but wasn't regarded as noteworthy by anybody.

Why is it suddenly headline news now it applies to Reform?

Sociologists care.
It’s often how research is done. For example, particular advertisements are often aimed at a particular demographic.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jul-24 14:31:50

Yes, I did an A level in sociology at night school. smile

maddyone Fri 05-Jul-24 14:37:08

It’s an interesting subject isn’t it MissA?

Well Starmer wants to reform The House of Lords, so does that mean those with honours will lose those honours? So Starmer will lose his title? I don’t think he’ll be happy to do that!

No, it means that peers of the realm (and a knight is not a peer of the realm) will no longer automatically sit in the second chamber, which is currently the House of Lords. Nor will the Anglican bishops.

Not that any proposals have been put forward yet. I doubt it's a Labour priority at the moment. There are things which directly affect people which need attending to first.

It doesn't affect any titles art all (which, I suspect, only the monarch can deprive people of as it is the monarch who confers honours)

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jul-24 14:42:35

I really, really enjoyed it!
I hadn't ever done it before, but it's the ultimate "people watching" experience.

I would have liked to have gone deeper into the subject, but my laziness stopped me. smile
Well, that and other circumstances.

After the 2011 PR referendum failed to attain PR folk stopped banging on a out it.

I sympathise, I would be Prime Minister if it wasnt for my laziness grin

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jul-24 15:47:12

It's a shame we both have this condition.
The rest of my family are lucky.

They don't have it. grin

Rachel Reeves is first female Chancellor, Angela Raynor Deputy PM. Pleased about Rachel Reeves - rather apprehensive about the volatile AR.

So did I - it was a pleasure rather than a chore. So interesting to learn about what people do - and the lecturer emphasised that curtain twitching is not nosiness, it is 'Empirical Research'. Evidently we all seem to be interested in others, to a degree, and I would have liked to follow on with psychology, to delve in to why we do what we do. However, like you, events curtailed further study at that time.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jul-24 16:11:12

Yes, I'm interested in psychology, crime - what makes people tick.
That's all it is now, just for pleasure, and nothing too "heavy".

People are fascinating .

Urmstongran Fri 05-Jul-24 20:47:07

Me again. 😁

This fifth seat for Reform is an example of FPTP working in Reform’s favour. If they build their membership and let their members choose who will represent them at the next election, they will wipe the floor. The whole point of FPTP is that you build a quorum ahead of the election, not afterwards. It’s a ruthless system, but it ensures each constituency gets the person who best represents their views.

Getting the third highest percentage vote across the country is a magnificent feat for such a new party!. It’s interesting that Reform came second in so many constituencies, which of course, does not win you a seat but means you are on the right track.

Pantglas2 Fri 05-Jul-24 21:03:05

I’m fascinated at the way they had such a good turnout in Wales, Urms.

They got more votes than Plaid Cymru who did well to win 4 seats and got almost three times more than the Lib Dems who got 1 seat.

Labour and the Tories both lost support to varying degrees, with the latter ending up with just under half of Labour’s votes but no MPs!
