Keir Starmer is growing on me. I am delighted with this, which shows, imo, a lot of both intelligent (which I expected) and aspiration (which I did not) decision making

I’m fascinated at the way they had such a good turnout in Wales, Urms.

They got more votes than Plaid Cymru who did well to win 4 seats and got almost three times more than the Lib Dems who got 1 seat.

Labour and the Tories both lost support to varying degrees, with the latter ending up with just under half of Labour’s votes but no MPs!

The Tory (Minister) in an adjoining English constituency would have retained his seat had the Reform candidate not stood there and gained over 8,000 votes.
The Tory lost by 278 votes to Labour.

Class doesn’t be exist in the UK. You’re having a laugh, aren’t you? One of the most,if not the most, class ridden societies in the world. Very noticeable.

nanna8 I don’t think that anyone has noticed that social divisions in the UK are changing. The old Registrar General scales 1 to 7 in the main apply to the indigenous population of the UK . Applied to a society in the 1950s until the vast surge in immigration. I don’t think that migrants fit neatly into the class system but retain their own identity - caste systems for Indians, and so on. I do believe that Keir Starmer is wrong about social stratification here but …..any thoughts?

Not sure if it has already been mentioned elsewhere, but I understand that women will now make up 40% of the House, plus a good proportion of Secretaries of State and Ministers.
This must be good news and a cause for celebration (especially if it gets rid of some of the traditional braying and shouting).

Hello,urmstongran, good to see you’re following the results. Your point about FPTP is well made. The number of votes for Reform must be noticed by the new government and the Conservatives. Of course, I don’t share your enthusiasm for Reform, far too many of their candidates and supporters have extreme views.
Farage seems to admire Andrew Taite as a role model for yiung men. That’s enough to scare and alienate women.
So this has made me less enthusiastic for FPTP but we will see how the Reform mp’s perform

Interestingly, our ex-MP and Tory Cabinet member went to a state school and so do his children now. Perhaps he was one of very few.
I do hope they don't get teased or bullied at school next week.

I don’t remember the news media banging on about what % of the electorate voted for a winning party before. It’s all they talked about yesterday. They didn’t make a point of saying Brexit was wrong because 3 out of 5 countries didn’t vote for it. The thought that we could have had 100 Reform MP’s fills me with dread. And it occurred to me that Labours meticulous election planning included working out how to win seats with a low turnout.

Our district stayed Conservative so we now have an MP who lives some 350 miles away from his constituency which he was given as it is considered a safe Tory seat. Perhaps if the turnout hadn't been so low then the result might have been different.
IMO you should go to the ballot box even if you spoil your paper.
Will Labour sort out our multitude of problems? Well Keir Starmer seems sincere enough but it won't be as easy as all that.

Oh, I do! It used to be said of the Liberal Party when they got quite a large number of votes but very few seats proportionally.

Also, I think, when Thatcher got in. I forget what percentage of votes the Tories got then but it was certainly mentioned as well below 50% ergo she didn't have a mandate.

I won’t be holding my breath for much to change. Rachel Reeves has said there is no money, so expect more of the same.

A low turn out then only 35% of that is not a resounding victory, FPTP doesnt work, we need more proportional representation. Reform got more votes than Lib Dems/ 4 seats and 71 seats is a ridiculous situation.

In the last general election the Liberal Democrats got three times as many votes as the SNP but the SNP got four times as many MPs as the Liberal Democrats.

I voted LibDem. My cousin voted SNP, so his vote counted 12 times as much as mine.

The SNP were treated as the Third Party which gave the their leader the right to two questions to the PM at PMQs every week whilst Ed Davey scarcely ever got the chance to speak at all.

Of course we need PR. If a lot of people vote for a terrible party, so be it, but I think a lot of people might vote differently if they knew their vote actually counted.

Yes, it is a historic victory but Labour won because Farage's party Reform split the Tory vote in many seats coming second in a lot of northern ones and because the voters kicked the Tories out in the south by tactically voting Lib Dem. It's not a case of the public turning Left in most cases. One in seven voted Reform. Labour has the lowest share of the vote of any winning party since 1945. Farage is an astute politician and says he is coming for Labour next.

Labour must deliver and especially for those following Farage as pied piper. That does not mean adopting Farage's views but dealing with the underlying issues of poverty, poor education and inability to compete for better jobs.

The Tory legacy is appalling but Labour has to deal with it in all our interests.
