Who should lead the Tories now?

I'm still curious as to why Keir Starmer was elected as leader of the Labour party. Was he really the best candidate

Curtaintwitcher you seem very sure that this government will fall apart. I am not a Labour supporter and didn't vote Labour last week, but I think this is the first proper grown-up government we have had in over 25 years, with a leader with proven successful career behind him who has played his cards very well over the last 5 years and I see no reason for that to change.

Any political party needs to decide what is electable, the Tories did it with Johnson, Labour did it with Starmer.

As regards the Tories, I don't think it matters at the moment. They need to get together and face up to their failure in government and discuss how they are going to do it better next time. When things start to fall apart with Labour and another election is looming, then will be the time to select a leader who will represent the new Conservatives.

So you don’t think the Tories need to decide soon what they stand for and organise themselves in such a way that they can elect a leader to challenge the government over the next five years then Curtainwitcher? Wow.

Yes I agree with finding out what they stand for. A really clear set of values would be ideal. I dont know that they are bold enough to do that at the moment.

What a good idea. Let’s bring back a disgraced former PM. A man who has lied and cheated in his personal and professional life for personal gain over and over again. A man who has contributed massively to a decline in standards in public life which has spilled out into ordinary life. Yes, that’s just what the country needs!

Exactly. After winning a huge majority at the GE he orchestrated his party's decline with his behaviour and the result of that was clearly seen last Thursday.

I agree 100%. It seems to me that they've really lost their way. Rory Stewart has spoken a number of times about this issue.

Why not. I would vote for her. They need someone who will stand up and be counted Kemi Badenoch would.

She is not popular with the remaining Conservative MPs nor her constituents. I really can't see that she would regain any of the votes the Conservatives have lost.

Agree. Unfortunately those who are committed enough to join any political party is not representative of the average voter. Labour discovered that when they boosted membership and got Corbyn as leader, the Tories found the same with Truss. MPs have a better idea than members but that's not seen as democratic.

The main requirement of the next Conservative leader is that they are someone that the mass of the electorate, who are not party members, would be prepared to vote for.

The personal preferences of individual Conservative members, is, in fact, irrelevant.

I cringed when I saw Braverman interviewed yesterday and she could only come out with a nasty catty remark about Starmer.

More important than the new leader is to decide what the Tory party actually stands for I would have thought, because without establishing that they will continue to be at war with each other over decisions and the way forward.
