French police stand by and watch the boats leave for Britain. Now you are in charge Yvette Cooper what's your plan after you cancelled the Rwanda deterrent?

I think it would be a good idea for this to become a rant thread for the disaffected, to show us all how far you will go unchecked. I’m not going to play.

Very sensible.

Only because the two of you know we are correct.

What I want stopped is the RNLI ferrying these people, they are going to France to collect them!

Where is your evidence for that, please Shantygirl?
Or is it a Farage meme?

I very much doubt that those asylum seekers who arrived on the 9th July were waiting for a Labour government. It's much more likely they were waiting for suitable weather. I don't know of anyone who wants uncontrolled migration or people risking their lives in small boats. I am hopeful that Labour will have some more coherent and legal ways of tackling the problem than the previous government which was totally hopeless.

The Kurds have given Starmer the title of “our friend, the man who will help us” so even they know what a soft touch he is and Yvette Cooper is the same.

Do you not think the Kurdish people need help, then?

I agree with Sago on the attitude of the French at the ports, and we see this first hand four or five times a year. They just can't be bothered, despite the money they were given by Rishi Sunak.
Large numbers of local French police have already been sent to Paris for the Olympics until October time. So, other areas of policing across the country will undoubtedly suffer.

*Labour will do nothing to solve this problem.*

Do you not think we should give them time to put their plan into action before judging them?

Yes I do.
I also think they’ve had a long time to decide on their plans and it’s worrying to hear nothing about what they are.
One of the reasons many voted Labour was the constant (not unjustified) criticism of Conservative methods, and their implication that they knew how to sort the problem.

Maybe GN could have an area called "Echo Chamber".

MayBee70 Fri 12-Jul-24 10:48:48

Well, for a start Keir is rebuilding our fractured relationship with our European neighbours. Let’s not forget Truss and her comment about Macron. There’s no quick fix to all of this. Maybe people would feel happier if they had a meaningless three word sound bite to encompass it?

Mollygo Fri 12-Jul-24 10:49:15

🤣🤣🤣
I’m not going to play. is a familiar cry where I work.

Their only plan is stopping the gangs. And they never will achieve that. Find one gang and take them out, up steps another. And we can’t prosecute people who are not UK citizens and who are engaged in criminal activities abroad. We have to rely on other countries to act. We can talk to those other countries until we’re blue in the face and supply them with a great deal of money but we have seen how well that works with the French haven’t we?

Why don’t they use the navy to escort the boats back to France and arrest the ones driving them? It seems obvious, that is what used to happen off Darwin to stop them.

You just have to bring Farage into it, don’t you? Pathetic. 😂😂😂

Why would having three human rights lawyers in parliament be an issue? I would think this would help government not be a hinderance. It's of note that three conservative MPs, David Simmonds, Caroline Nokes and Simon Fell were being paid by RAMP which was described by The Telegraph as a "pro migration policy unit". Staying within the law, both National and International, should be the aim of any government regardless of party politics.

I’d just like someone to tell me properly, without sniping at other posters, how are ‘the gangs’ going to be ‘smashed’?
It’s a wonderful idea, and would obviously be great if it could happen, but I’m a bear of very little brain, and consequently I’m unable to understand how it’s going to be achieved. I’ve heard a lot of the gangs operate from Turkey.
I know it can’t be achieved next week, but how will it be achieved over the next five years?
Anyone?

maddyone Fri 12-Jul-24 11:10:29

Incidentally I’ve seen film of the RNLI sending their boats to pick up migrants. I live on the south coast. It’s occasionally on the local news. It does happen, but more usually Border Force pick them up.
Just for clarification.

The UK and other countries already have people working undercover in several countries. I don't think they're going to make details of their investigations public.

Did they enter French waters, as claimed?

Good suggestion nanna8.

I see from today's Times, one of the front runners for the Boarder Force job has ruled himself out

He knows this is a Poison Chalice of a job.

Cossy Fri 12-Jul-24 11:50:08

For goodness sake, does this constant griping about our new govt never ever stop!

Some of you were so quick to rush to the defence of the previous govt, who had 14 years to stop this issue and many others.

I think most of us know Rwanda would never have worked, the traffickers could not give two figs what happens to the people they traffic once they have their cash and piled them all into boats and in the back of lorries.

Who knows if the LP plans and policies for anything will work, but for heavens sake, they’ve barely been in power a week!

No, because it’s not been shared with us as yet, just as many “plans” aren’t shared by any government for pretty obvious reasons.

MayBee70 Fri 12-Jul-24 11:52:27

And they’re trying to solve the problem without attempting to dehumanise people or make them scapegoats for everything that is wrong with this country.

I think you might just find weather has much to do with people crossing, not the govt 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

This is why they can't. It was suggested in 2021/2022

www.navylookout.com/why-its-not-the-royal-navys-job-to-stop-migrant-boats/

Legally would be considered an act of war under international agreements followed the world over as regards rights to enter another countries jurisdictions. Farage's turn back the boats conveniently ignored this as an option and it's been raised so many times in GN. Also you'd need permission to land people.

Well the U.K. government have got to work more closely with the EU, as it is a Europe wide problem. These people don’t just spring up in France, they come via several long distance routes. Brexit put a massive spanner in those works. Rwanda was never going to work, and would only involve a few hundred people at best, so wasn’t the long term answer. Many of the smuggler gangs live in plain sight in the U.K., so these people have got to be rooted out more efficiently. But the boat people shrink into insignificance beside the huge numbers who overstay the creaking visa system brought in by the Tories,
