French police stand by and watch the boats leave for Britain. Now you are in charge Yvette Cooper what's your plan after you cancelled the Rwanda deterrent?

For goodness sake, does this constant griping about our new govt never ever stop

Sadly Cossy I don’t think it will ever stop. There are people who simply did not want Labour to win the election, and will refuse to acknowledge anything positive about a Labour government - no matter what that government achieves.

They’re already demonstrating their vehemence for the new government in their criticism of Labour … after one week in office.

It’s very sad when mature people demonstrate such blinkered, narrow-minded thinking, but what can you do🤷‍♀️

I’ve had to live with 14 years of a Tory government that I largely despised and a Brexit referendum result that I wholly despised. That’s life folksgrin

eazybee Fri 12-Jul-24 12:40:15

We have had fourteen years of griping about a Conservative government. When you criticise actions you must be able to offer a viable alternative solution.
We are waiting.

BevSec Fri 12-Jul-24 12:42:16

The answer is to stop people wanting to come here in the first place.

I agree.

However, though they have had 14 years of opportunity to decide what would work and they might have viable plans, it will take longer than a week to implement them.

How?

Counties across Europe and in the USA ask the same. Not unique to the UK.

By the way, let's be clear we are talking about a small % of those entering our country, most do so on legal visas within the immigration points system to work or study.

vegansrock Fri 12-Jul-24 12:48:47

Yes and many overstay said visas and are never followed up. Universal ID would go some way to solving this problem.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Jul-24 12:49:35

😄😄 this will calm down. Most of the criticism at present is pretty spurious, and not to be taken seriously.

For goodness sake, does this constant griping about our new govt never ever stop!

Some of you were so quick to rush to the defence of the previous govt, who had 14 years to stop this issue and many others.

I think most of us know Rwanda would never have worked, the traffickers could not give two figs what happens to the people they traffic once they have their cash and piled them all into boats and in the back of lorries.

Who knows if the LP plans and policies for anything will work, but for heavens sake, they’ve barely been in power a week!

I think the idea was to stop people wanting to come here if all that would happen was they were sent to Rwanda. There the demand for traffickers would fall the old law of supply and demand.

Here is the plan some of you say doesn’t exist:

Mollygo Fri 12-Jul-24 12:58:21

I don’t think the criticisms will stop.

They haven’t with previous governments time in power so why would this one be different?
What’s new is that everyone can endlessly reiterate their support or non-support at the touch of a screen.

Those in favour will refuse to accept any criticism, justified or not.

Those who weren’t in favour will continue to offer criticism justified or not and get accused of griping for doing that.

It happened years ago too, but there were no instant platforms for everyone to jump on and broadcast their views.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 12-Jul-24 13:03:05

That speech was made in 2013 Jane.

Quite right Mollygo.

There is a paywall, I would like access to it though. Not on U tube that I could find.

Wyllow3 Fri 12-Jul-24 13:08:31

Just realised - the article was from 2013!

westendgirl Fri 12-Jul-24 13:08:32

They've only been in a week.
Can you please explain how the Rwanda scheme would have worked ?

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 12-Jul-24 13:12:34

It was intended to be a deterrent and it was beginning to prove just that, with illegal immigrants travelling to Ireland. Now there is no deterrent whatsoever.

nanna8 Fri 12-Jul-24 13:13:16

I thought the government was in charge of the armed forces. Obviously not.

Wyllow3 Fri 12-Jul-24 13:15:16

(sorry for repeat on 2013 was researching).

GSM, it's far, far too early to see if it will work. There is so much groundwork to be done - like having enough asylum assessors, contacting safe countries re deportation, building stronger European wide anti smuggling organisations.

Jane43 Fri 12-Jul-24 13:15:44

Germanshepherdsmum

That speech was made in 2013 Jane.

I doubt if her philosophy has changed since then.

I think I would like to give the Labour government a chance to prove themselves unlike those of you who wrote them off even before they came to government.

Wyllow3 Fri 12-Jul-24 13:18:41

Have you read the article? Our government is signed up to world wide agreements on action on the seas which are designed to protect the UK from invasion or other activities in UK controlled waters!

You cant complain that somehow we can have those protections whilst ignoring those of other countries.

maddyone Fri 12-Jul-24 13:20:52

Maybe the world wide agreements aren’t fit for the situation today.
