French police stand by and watch the boats leave for Britain. Now you are in charge Yvette Cooper what's your plan after you cancelled the Rwanda deterrent?

Can’t say I’m surprised. France doesn’t want them.

Rwanda plan wasn't deterring anyone...

MayBee70 Thu 18-Jul-24 11:12:42

The Rwanda plan was instigated over 3 years ago and achieved nothing other than draining the country of a lot of money. And yet people are complaining that Labour haven’t achieved anything even though they’ve been in government for less than two weeks.

Growstuff Sorry we do NOT need any more people. We need to train people already here. Multiculturalism does not work. This country is changing fast and I suspect that most people who think immigration is a good thing do not live in parts of the country where it has already changed the landscape and not for the better.

Casdon Thu 18-Jul-24 11:22:06

The UK already is a multicultural society Skydancer, it always has been. Vikings, Romans etc. etc?

Purplepixie Thu 18-Jul-24 11:24:15

RIP to all of those people who have died. So very very sad.

Skydancer Thu 18-Jul-24 11:24:52

Casdon I agree BUT this has happened very gradually over many centuries.

All I can say is, I am glad I am on my way out & not on my in, dread to think what this country is going to be like in 10/20 years time. Think of the legacy you are leaving for your grandchildren

It makes me weep to think of what my children will have to face in their old age, and what my lovely grandchildren will have to endure in 30 or 40 years time. You can see where this country is heading just by watching the news reports.

Where's it heading? I bet you didn't know where the country was heading 40 years ago.

No, we don't know what is ahead, anymore than my parents did, in the early 60s, with two small children and fingers hovering over the nuclear button during the Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis. Luckily for many of us, life went on

I definitely knew which way it was heading 30 years ago and was spot on. Now every time I look at the news someone has been stabbed, body parts in suitcases etc.

What on earth has the Bristol incident got to do with migration?

Maybe Chestnut and others are hankering over the good old days when we had home grown criminals?

I’m finding the anti asylum seeker/immigrant rhetoric on gransnet depressing and soul destroying. The level of ignorance, xenophobic anger seems to increase in the face of attempts by more well informed, temperate contributors to develop a dialogue.
The problem will increase. We need a European method Pfi working together to find least worst options.

Aveline Thu 18-Jul-24 12:09:32

Iam64 I think that's easier to say if you don't live in an area where this has become a problem or where the native UK population has been overtaken by the sheer number of immigrants/migrants legal or not.

Nano14 Thu 18-Jul-24 12:09:53

Wyllow3

Isn't part of the problem the paucity of safe and legal routes?
If there were, it would be easier to sort out and assess.

Exactly.

Some of you need to read this!

Totally agree Iam. The rhetoric on GN has taken a very nasty turn. I’ve stepped away now and stopped trying to put forward any sort of alternative, fact-based perspective.

So easy to bandy the word racist around. I have never met anyone who is racist, most folks are tolerant and kindly.

I have met many racists, especially in my own age group. (age 75) Of course, apart from their very racist views and comments, they 'appear' to be kind generous people. However, I see the eye rolling and looks between them when I speak out against their racist views. Racists do not want to listen to reason!

Mollygo Thu 18-Jul-24 12:37:11

Iam64
Do you really think all those concerned about the influx of illegals into a country where we hear daily about the lack of homes, insufficient GPs, dentists or hospital places, children in poverty, and the need for food banks can be dismissed as xenophobia?

I posted, at 12.49 yesterday,

I agree that we should have a faster and more robust way of granting or refusing asylum to those who come through legal channels.

But when I asked if
the illegal migrants are doing the right thing and should be allowed to continue pouring into the UK.
I was told that this is not an interrogation.
So evidently, querying whether we should allow the boats to continue is both an interrogation and xenophobic.
Oh well . . .

Casdon Thu 18-Jul-24 12:37:56

You’ve hit the nail on the head there Nano14.

Because I read/saw they were on YouTube.

Where are they all going to go once rubber stamped because that is what will happen. MOST have no IDs and will be out on the streets to free up the hotels etc. No one will be sent back. Really it's an amnesty all will be allowed to stay.

The most unreliable place to garner facts is on YouTube, it's full of cranks and conspiracy theorists.

That’s so true Aveline, or if you live in an urban area which has been multicultural for as long as you can remember. I have posted before about the consequences of a disused RAF barracks in the next village to my son in very rural Essex being used as a centre for male asylum seekers. It’s literally just a stroll across the fields. Unsurprisingly, beautiful houses in a beautiful little village are not selling.

Galaxy Thu 18-Jul-24 12:45:06

I find that those who lecture others on racism tend to be generally quite bigoted in other ways.

Probably so, as we are all bigoted in some respects. Racism is one of the most revolting forms of bigotry though.

I'm finding the act of reporting (on this thread), along with the spiteful comments towards posters depressing, soul destroying and out of order.
Especially if you're a new keyboard warrior or a trigger happy reporter of posts, you would do well to think before you type or hit the button.

Iam64 Thu 18-Jul-24 12:50:02

Mollygo -are you really equating concern about pressure on housing and services as xenophobia? I’m certainly not and no where has I accused “all those’ who have of xenophobia.

Aveline, my town is a designated city of sanctuary. Rents are cheaper than in the south east so we get many people seeking asylum. The biggest group are from Syria, Afghanistan then African countries. So I’m familiar with changing demographics.

Thanks Nano14 for the link. I hope contributors read the reality rather than see themselves as well informed by incorrect inflammatory outlets
