French police stand by and watch the boats leave for Britain. Now you are in charge Yvette Cooper what's your plan after you cancelled the Rwanda deterrent?

If they got rid of the backlog by doing as you say I will be furious.

They won’t do that because . . .
using Blair’s solution would not be the action of a decent hardworking man of integrity.

So has it now been proved that Blair gave amnesty to people?

LizzieDrip Sat 13-Jul-24 18:29:09

karmalady when was this announced?

Shinamae Sat 13-Jul-24 18:32:19

100,000 destined for Rwanda have been given an amnesty

Really? Where an earth are they going to live? 🤔

LizzieDrip Sat 13-Jul-24 18:40:42

karmalady can you please confirm where you got this information from.

The only info I can find about asylum seekers allegedly given amnesty was a claim made in the media that Sunak was going to do it in order to get the “Illegal immigration bill” through. I can’t find anything that says Sunak actually did it.

And I certainly can’t find anything that says the Labour government is doing it.

If you going to make such assertions, please cite the source of your information otherwise … it’s just fake news!

na, its twisting a scaremongering headline from the Telegraph

Kevin Saunders former Chief Immigration Officer on what Labour will do.

Telegraph is turning into a Red-Top.

The Rwanda plan was better than nothing - which is what we now have. Knowing that immigration was so important to voters, why hasn't Labour come in all guns blazing with an amazing plan. They had long enough to formulate one.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Jul-24 20:58:34

👏👏👏

Iam64 Sat 13-Jul-24 21:08:20

I’d prefer to hear from Labour than some right wing commentator on X or GBnews.

The majority of asylum seekers have their applications met. Therefore genuine

Of course you would!! However the former Chief Immigration Officer with decades of experience is a reliable source.😉

when you actually watch the video - all Kevin Saunders says on the GB X video is how dangerous it is and how ruthless the boat smugglers are, pictures to go with.

He doesn't mention any plans at all from any party/comment in anyway what might work or not

As I hear it, the French are making the most of playing piggy in the middle. They want Britain to be more co-operative over this issue, but they also want Italy to stop migrants crossing over their border. Basically, they don't want to be inundated, like no one else does.

Schengan is the problem, surely. Free movement should be for citizens , passport holder only. Not just anyone who lands on their shores. Hasn't Meloni spoken about closing their border. Has worked with Hungary.

Reading some of the points made further up reminded me of the points system we faced when we were considering emigration.
Positive qualifications -skills, particularly those to fill shortages, health, age etc. Then negative points, lack of skills needed by the country in question and ill-health including problems children had which would cost the country money.
Do we have a points system like that?

Boris Johnson 2019, was determined to push on with an immigration system similar to Australia, and it commenced in 2022 ; House of Commons Library.

Seems people have forgotten that the reason that the Rwanda plan failed repeatedly was because it was illegal. There were Tory MPs who voted against it for that reason. There are lots of ways we could deter asylum seekers landing in small boats, we could say we'll shoot them but that would be illegal, we could say we'll deport them to Syria by dropping them out of planes, but that would be illegal. The reason the UK spent millions of pounds and didn't manage to get one unwilling asylum seeker to Rwanda was because they would have been acting illegally. So why don't we just focus on having an effective immigration service (which the Tories didn't have), process people efficiently so those who have a right to asylum can work and start making a contribution to the UK and deport those who don't. By all means tighten up any loopholes, work closely with our European partners who take many more refugees than we do and be "grown up" about our responsibilities. BTW we have absolutely hopeless systems in place to check who is in this country legally and who has overstayed their visa, that's the result of 14 years of Conservative government!

keepingquiet Sun 14-Jul-24 10:16:09

Well said Foxie! Most of this is just media wind-up. Do people think that if Sunak was still PM plane loads of people would be being flown to Rwanda?

It was only ever a massively expensive publicity stunt and people fell for it. It was never going to solve the issue.

Nicenanny3 Sun 14-Jul-24 10:35:15

The Rwanda plan was a Deterrent and if the first plane had been allowed to take off 2/3 years ago instead of being stopped by some faceless EU human rights judge and the government had shown some balls and ignored them things might have been different now and we wouldn't be facing thousands coming over on the boats costing 8 million pounds plus a day. Labour continually tried every trick to stop any legislation going through to stop the boats so now we are paying the price and it was having an effect you only have to look at Ireland where failed UK asylum seekers who were earmarked for Rwanda went to (Youtube). The fact that over in Calais the Syrian gangs are calling Keir Starmer 'the friendly one' I rest my case.

foxie48 Sun 14-Jul-24 11:44:01

The legislation kept failing because it was illegal, the Conservatives had a big majority in the Commons, in the Lords the Conservatives had 270 and Labour 175, so a majority of 95. Where do you get your £8million a day from?

maddyone Sun 14-Jul-24 11:48:14

People have overstayed their visas long before the last fourteen years foxie. We are having people coming to light who have overstayed their visas from the seventies. There was a feature on BBC news recently regarding one person who came here in the 1970s and simply never went home. Suddenly the authorities caught up with them and so they complained to the news and had their case featured. I assume they were hoping that would result in them being allowed to stay.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 14-Jul-24 12:01:55

And still Yvette Cooper refuses to countenance digital ID.

Iam64 Sun 14-Jul-24 12:03:42

The man who runs our local refugee support group arrived from a war torn African country. It took four years for him to have his application processed. The group are supporting some people who have waited 6 years.

The Rwanda plan was illegal and costing mind boggling amounts. Thankfully we had ‘faceless EU human rights judges’. Even more fortunately, our own independent high court judges also concluded it was illegal.

Nicenanny3 Sun 14-Jul-24 12:13:20

Another 127 arrived yesterday on 2 boats, imagine what it will be like when the weather improves. Total 717 new arrivals since 6th July.

Blenheim Palace
