Why do some Scottish people dislike England so much

I have just seen this front page of The National.

I assume nobody from Scotland has ever been to Spain…

There’s rivalry between the Welsh and English, too. Not to mention Irish. Old,old rivalries . Flower of Scotland, We’re off to Dublin in the Green, Yma O Hyd etc etc- been around forever. Part of history and does it really matter ?

The National is an SNP rag. It makes no bones about wanting separation from the union. I don't know who exactly buys it and I don't know anyone who does. I'd take any headline of theirs with a huge pinch of salt. Please don't think all Scots think in such a mean spirited way.

I think I remember Andy Murray saying something along the lines some years ago re. an international between England and Paraguay "I really hope Paraguay wins" Didn't stop him marrying an English woman and living down here in England though confused

I do remember Murray being asked who he supported (it may have been football) and he said "Anyone but England".

I think he was told that if he wanted the country to unite in their support of him then he needed to stop spouting such nationalistic rubbish.

He did, he has matured and is now a National Treasure.

I can take a guess or two 😁

Not that I know anyone personally who would buy it.

Yes. There's been stuuf in the news about Spain not liking British (or is it only English?) tourists lately. This has just (stupidly) picked up on that.

Nothing to do with English or British but tourists in general. It’s about lack of property for locals.

Have you read the text above the picture ?

Nothing to do with football just trashing English people in general…

It's not as if Scots ever visit Spain, is it. Or ever get drunk!

It really is racist.

sassysaysso Sat 13-Jul-24 14:37:29

Can't believe the over reaction to this, as someone said its football banter and rivalry. I'm English and not the slightest bit offended, nor do I believe the Scots hate us. Let's face it, if England win tomorrow, English media of all kinds will be smug and insufferable

Marydoll Sat 13-Jul-24 14:55:27

I do not think this newspaper reflects the view of many of us who are Scottish.
Anyone with a bit of intelligence would realise that.

I am in agreement with Grandmabatty and Baggs here.

Kate1949 Sat 13-Jul-24 15:16:37

I believe the demonstrations in Spain are in protest against tourism in general, not just from Britain or England.

I'm English but spend a lot of time in Scotland because I have a lot of family there. And I have to say, I try not to speak at all in my RP English accent, if I happen to be in Edinburgh when there's a Scottish-English match.
As my Scottish brother-in-law says, "The thing we Sots hate most about the English is that they can't be bothered to hate us back."

Boz Sat 13-Jul-24 15:29:45

Isn't it to do with King Edward's hammering of the Scots about 800 year ago; Braveheart and all that? Long memories.

This is true there are some Scottish, Welsh and Irish people who do hate the English but the English don't give a toss.

I have lived in England since 1966 but would never consider myself remotely English. If asked my nationality I say Scottish and never British but tomorrow night I will be hoping against hope that England win.

Sarnia Sat 13-Jul-24 15:36:23

It's football. England and Scotland have always been rivals. It isn't Spain that Scotland will be cheering on. They would be cheering any country playing against England in the final. They don't need to fret North of the Border, Spain should come out the winners tomorrow.

Cherrytree59 Sat 13-Jul-24 15:38:23

I am a proud Scot and will always back my National team, but we are oot!
or Mickie Flannigan would say
'we're not just out, we are out out'😆

Football can sadly bring out the worst n a small minority 😢

Today I am behind England all the way!

6 Nations Rugby 🏉 is great fun 😊

Oh well I'm not interested in football Maw, and to a certain extent I do think there are some English who have been dining out on the '66 win forever, but I imagine there will be a lot of crowing amongst a certain element if England lose.

I think Andy Murray's comment was youthful bravado which he said he regretted so he's clearly moved on and matured since then.

As a Scot living in England with no real interest in football, I only get really exercised over the Six Nations 🏉 but am bemused at those who take small-minded Sottish-English rivalry so seriously.
I was aware of a lot of anti-English sentiment in my growing-up in the Borders but I think mainly among those without the intellect to look outside their own limited boundaries.

Thanks, tickingbird. I didn't look very closely at that "stuuf" in the news! 😂

Not with me, can’t stand the man, but that’s cos of his character and not his country.😄
He certainly learned not to spout divisive stuff about England in public.

Well that’s one Scot on our side then.🤣
If asked my nationality I say English, but we were once pestered to death by sellers of tourist tat on the streets of Rome, they came up saying ‘Engleesh? Americanos?’ My DH at that time shook his head and said ‘Welsh’ which stopped them in their tracks. We remained silent, so did they, then they left us alone.

Oreo Sat 13-Jul-24 15:55:09

As the rag you mention is produced by Scot Nats OP I would expect nothing else, tho their mention of eating fried stuff is a bit ironic given the love of it in Scotland.😄

Baggs Sat 13-Jul-24 15:57:30

If you've never tried fried Mars Bar, oreo, you really should.

Admittedly I've only eaten it once but it was delish.

Oreo Sat 13-Jul-24 16:01:02

I don’t even like unfried Mars Bars Baggs otherwise I’d be open to giving it a go😂

MissInterpreted Sat 13-Jul-24 16:05:49

The very idea of a deep fried Mars Bar gives me the boak (as we say here in Scotland!), and I have to say I don't know anyone who has even tried one either.

Baggs Sat 13-Jul-24 16:06:01

I don't like unfried Mars Bars either. Fried is a different animal altogether, especially with added chocolate sauce and vanilla ice-cream 😋

Baggs Sat 13-Jul-24 16:07:03

Actually I shared it with a German friend. It was shallow fried in a nice thin pancake batter. She liked it too.
