I have just seen this front page of The National.

I assume nobody from Scotland has ever been to Spain…

My father, on the other hand, always said "A yacht" when we asked him what he wanted for his birthday and when we said we can't afford that, Dad, he'd say, Oh well, a Mars Bar then.

Haha, imagine how stoked he’d have been with a yacht and a Mars Bar.

Interesting. Why do so many French people dislike them, too? If we go to France we make certain they know we are Australians. The attitude changes instantly for the better! Historical from the time of Mary Queen of Scots ? Same when my grandson went to a Greek school- they didn’t like Macedonians. Long , long histories? Most of us to pretend it doesn’t exist of course, it’s definitely not pc these days.

We were moored up on a French canal. A chap came cycling past and obviously wanted to talk.
It was all going well until he asked us how we got there. We explained, across the Chanel.
His reply was: oh, I thought you were Australian.
Why, was our reply. Your flag, was his response.
With that he stood up and said: I don’t like the English and promptly left 😂
A lock keeper told us he didn’t like the English because we don’t spend money in France.
He said he liked the Germans because they always tip well.
My husband replied: they’re only saying sorry because they invaded your country.

It's football. England and Scotland have always been rivals. It isn't Spain that Scotland will be cheering on. They would be cheering any country playing against England in the final. They don't need to fret North of the Border, Spain should come out the winners tomorrow.

Sad.

There’s rivalry between the Welsh and English, too. Not to mention Irish. Old,old rivalries . Flower of Scotland, We’re off to Dublin in the Green, Yma O Hyd etc etc- been around forever. Part of history and does it really matter ?

Every Australian knows that Wales is part of England 😁

GrannyGravy13 Sat 13-Jul-24 16:30:25

I would like to make it clear that I do not hate the Scots or any other race of people.

I haven’t got a problem with football banter either , but this seemed a bit more than banter.

TerriBull Sat 13-Jul-24 16:33:48

Well Georgw doubleya' thought Wales was part of the US, when asking young Charlotte Church where she came from she replied "Wales" he said "what State's that in?" She should have replied "a very good state than you Mr President"smile

It does actually, because it can go way too far and lead to this sort of tragedy. A young Scottish lad stamped to death just because his killers thought he was English. I’ve never forgotten the case.

Banter is one thing, the xenophobic comments in that National article are disgraceful.

than thank

I think I made in clear in my posts that, while I think football banter is one thing, this went beyond that, and I'm sure there are many, many Scots who would feel the same way.

It doesn't matter where in the world you go all any country wants to be is better than England. I find it quite amusing the levels that some sink to to get this message across - gotta beat the English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I'll be delighted if England win tomorrow and surprised

I hope it's a good game.
I am proud of Scotland and the Scottish people but the National rag is the downside of Nationalism.

I was reading a fascinating history of univeral suffrage in Britain.

It wasn't just a Scot who was behind the movement in the late 1700s, but a man from my town!
Ofcourse I'm proud.

I think my Scottish friends would be ashamed.

The National has apologised for it's front page.
Scotland has a system where hate crimes can be reported anonymously online.
Here is the link
www.scotland.police.uk/secureforms/c3/
The irony of reporting The National for a Hate Crime is not lost on me, the number of reports should be available in due course.

Well we don’t like Sydneysiders and as for those sand gropers …. 😀😀😀 Human nature but mostly just tongue in cheek round here. So intense over in Europe, different.

Oh!!

Well we don’t like Sydneysiders
Oh dear! Probably worse still if they live right on the Harbour .....

I have learnt from GN that some people hate, really hate, people who are not the same political party as themselves.

So it no longer surprises me that people do really hate someone from a different country.

It's not the norm in real life except for extremists.

Similar sentiments to ‘anyone but…’ do occur elsewhere. I’ve met a young bloke wearing a T shirt saying ‘I SUPPORT NEW ZEALAND - AND WHOEVER’S PLAYING AUSTRALIA’.
And yes, if you need to ask, he was a NZer.

Yes, we call it out because it promotes hatred and violence.

Callistemon213 Tue 16-Jul-24 09:52:47

Never, ever celebrate an England victory if you are in Australia, not even 👏 ........

dragonfly46 Tue 16-Jul-24 10:00:19

My DSiL is Australian and I have never come across any hatred for the British - in fact he has taken out British nationality.

Sago Tue 16-Jul-24 10:00:50

It happens all over the world and is one persons bigotry not a nations.

Some friends went to Glasgow recently for a Stevie Nicks concert that was cancelled at the last minute, they ended up having a Glaswegian night out, they said they were so warmly welcomed and met lots of lovely people who took them under their wing and gave them a memorable weekend.

Back in Ireland a few years ago I was in a well known pub, on hearing my accent a local patron leapt on me and gave me a lecture on Irish history.
I got it all, Michael Collins, the potato famines Bloody Sunday etc!
I couldn’t get a word in, she was so angry.

Eventually the owner of the bar shouted across to her “will you shut the feck up” she is a **** and gave her my maiden name.
(I am from a well known and respected Irish family).

She looked mightily embarrassed and said “ why didn’t you tell me”

Mollygo Tue 16-Jul-24 10:02:06

Well until now I’ve supported Australia when it’s them against Europe, but now I know the Oz attitude thanks to Nanna8, I won’t bother.
(It isn’t the attitude of those in Oz that I know, unless they’re too polite to tell me)

GrannyGravy13 Tue 16-Jul-24 10:05:20

I totally get banter but I do not get hatred.

Why would you hate someone because of their political beliefs, the football team they support or the country they come from?

Perhaps I am just too much of a softie I always try to see the good in people, I have good friends of all political leanings, races and religions.
