Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

It would appear that there has been no or very little trouble in our area. Thank goodness.
It seems false information was published to cause maximum fear and disruption.
In my opinion this is despicable and unforgivable.

I think it was the fear of imprisonment that diffused everything. The speed at which people have been arrested and prosecuted has been unprecedented.

Ha ha just seen St Angela of Rayner talking about the riots and how thuggery is not the way this country behaves. 🤣Does she not realise she sounded just like a prize thug when she was spitting out words like scum, filth etc just a short while ago.
She has even tried to soften her voice.

Oh give it a rest.

Wonderful moment in Lancashire (there a short video on I player)

"A Muslim anti-fascist protester has spoken of the moment his group was embraced in support by pub-goers in Lancashire.
Thousands of counter-protesters have taken to the streets in towns and cities across the UK after rumours that far-right organised gatherings would target immigration centres and mosques.
Haddi Malik, 25, joined a peaceful march in Accrington, Lancashire, walking between two mosques in the town to counter a potential right-wing march.
Malik told the BBC it was a "massive" moment when pubgoers came up to some of the people marching and began hugging them

No edl/racists turned up in my town ❤️

That’s good to hear JaneJudge. It looks like the only significant disruption tonight has been in Portsmouth, but not targeting homes at least.

At least Boris cares about the country. This lot will not address concerns of the people any more than Richie did.

Who's Richie? Do you mean Rishi Sunak?

Our son says there's a party going on in Bristol!

Doesn’t look like that on Sky News at the moment.

Apologies. I think it was Portsmouth they were showing. Or it might have been an isolated incident. I am pleased that the counter protests have been successful but I still think that my family were right to follow the advice of the Home Secretary and stay at home.

Our son says there's a party going on in Bristol!

It’s a Uni city 😄

No Uni now! What is your point?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 07-Aug-24 22:00:47

I think that the violence is being gradually quelled. The thugs are being swiftly dealt with and Starmer has played a blinder.

The grown ups are back in charge.

JaneJudge Wed 07-Aug-24 21:59:36

Brighton is a city not a smaller town with complex issues.

They will now always be known by that.

It isn’t brilliant though. It would best if we all didn’t get involved with these violent scum. We are all staying in.

I agree with you JaneJudge
It would be best all round now if everyone stayed off the streets.
Even with the counter groups the masked people look intimidating and it makes the streets no go areas.
I think there’s now a really good reason to not allow any masks or face coverings at protests.

This is the Britain that I know and love❤️💕

OnwardandUpward Wed 07-Aug-24 21:24:22

Hooray for Brighton . I don't live there but where I live the peaceful protest was amazing too.

Here were hundreds of peaceful protesters and only about six fascists who looked and acted ridiculously, draped in flags and drinking lager...The others must be keyboard warriors or maybe have gone to a place more likely to get violent.

Not many rioters turning up.

either the social media platforms have been disabled enough -

or the rioters have overstretched themselves

- or its a deliberate tactic to re group?

Iam64 Wed 07-Aug-24 21:00:37

This response to the thugs is fantastic. I love the `Brighton response but how great to see peaceful counter protests

Wyllow3 Wed 07-Aug-24 20:53:35

The BBC I player live reporting has also reported that the Telegram platform has been taking down calls and organisation for the violence.

Interesting.

So far, not a lot of riot reports

Such a wonderful development WWM.
There are, indeed, more of us than there are of them.

Wyllow3 Wed 07-Aug-24 20:48:22

Its great by me to have positive peaceful rallies - as long as they stay away from engagement with violent thugs.

One thing above all else I’m grateful for was Brexit . Pity about those with holiday homes that need more paperwork as it must be tedious but worth it as it means not held to account by Brussels.

Brexit was a disaster. Still is.

Perhaps you meant to be sarcastic?
