More knife crime in Southend on sea

Daughter with grandkids in Southend has told me that Southend is in police lockdown due to gangs from east London arriving in large numbers yesterday and fighting with machetes and swords as well as knives in the high street and seafront, in broad daylight from 4pm onwards when families with children were out enjoying the weather.
They were luckily in the back garden and just saw police helicopters overhead but a friend with her children had gone to the seafront and witnessed youths brandishing machetes near Adventure Playground a place frequented by families with children which was of course heaving, she ran into a pub with the kids where the landlord ushered people inside and locked the doors.
The children were horrified and one of them had to sleep in the parents bed last night.
I have no words to describe how I feel right now……

My route home is along the seafront. The police presence for the past couple of weeks has been far beyond what we would normally see.
There was obviously a whisper that something was going to kick off.

Witzend

High time we had water cannons!

We sold them to other countries not afraid to use them.

I hope the Dispersal Order did not include these youths. They should be arrested and charged with carrying offensive weapons, incitement to violence and whatever else can be thrown at them.

Who is providing these weapons? Where do they source them?

For those who don’t know, Southend isn’t that near to East London so don’t go blaming Londoners for everything.😾
Seaside places in the UK in Summer, particularly in hot weather have often been a recipe for punch ups and more.
The trend for knife and machete and zombie knife carrying just makes things worse.
As does SM which directs young people to go to these places.

I wasn’t blaming Londoners for everything and it’s one of the nearest seaside resorts and East Enders have come in their droves for decades and decades, most of whom never cause any issues at all.

They used to, now far more likely to go to Spain.
Essex no doubt, like all areas of the UK has it’s own hooigans and thugs.

Hooligans!

Southend is about an hour and a half from East London where I lived until recently. I'm guessing the transport police can check where these hooligans came from, but I can't see East London has been mentioned. We have around 3 million people in East London, the majority of whom are law abiding citizens going about their daily lives. Personally I wouldn't move out of East London to get away from gangs, so I wouldn't think a move from Southend, not that I know it well, necessary either.

We used to visit Southend from East London but I haven’t been there in 30 years.

Either side (Chalkwell and Thorpe Bay) are still very family friendly.

SM has a lot to answer for.Huge numbers of kids/ young people can be mobilised at short notice to do something, go somewhere.

Oreo Wed 31-Jul-24 16:32:37

That’s good GrannyGravy hope this will be a short lived thing, hot weather madness.
Talking to Mum about it today and she said she remembers that in the 60’s and early 70’s there were lots of face offs in seaside places, Brighton particularly.

Police Dispersal Orders are issued all the time, all over England, I’m not sure about elsewhere.
The police did not ‘just look on’.
Is there some sort of hysteria affecting certain members of GN so they can’t fact check before posting?
Thank you GG13.

That's funny, but the clip I saw which I have just watched again, on X, clearly shows the Police having to stand there unable to affect anything, probably because they had no tasers and waiting for backup - who can blame them with thugs waiving machetes around, I certainly do not. But dont try to deflect from the actual event, parents having to rush their children into a pub and lock the door behind them must have been incredibly frightening. Seemingly trying to downplay 'events' like this because PDO's are issued all the time serves no-one and certainly does not excuse what happened.

No one is excusing what happened!

As you appear to have viewed at least one of the CCTV footage you will also have seen people walking past on the other side of the road, people shopping, etc,

No mass hysteria, no riots.

People walking past, shopping. That tells me we seem to be becoming immune to the daily thuggery that is happening on some of our streets.

Oreo Brighton was a tinderbox in the 60 s I must be your mums age I remember it all very well and the mods and rockers going at each other too, then there was the awful football riots was that 70 s ? Can’t remember it’s all so many decades gone by

I live close to Southend

My AC and GC live even closer.

The CCTV is on the local MP’s X if anyone wishes to view it.

It is not comparable to the riots in Southport.

Apologies if I sound like a Headmistress, (I am not by the way)

You are just lovely. And polite as always.

I do hope that as a nation, we never become desensitised to bad behaviour of this sort, or any sort really.
I am a Headmistress by the way!!

She’s 83😃
It’s amazing how much she remembers if I mention something that happened way back when.If I mention the football riots from the 70’s I may never get away, as footie hooligans were one of her pet hates. We lived very near the Spurs ground and she would sniff even at raised voices.🤣

Are you still, or retired? Either way, respect!

Oreo Wed 31-Jul-24 16:58:31

What I often worry about is that instead of piling in to help, people just whip out a phone as if it’s entertainment.
The upside tho is that they can get evidence that way.

Oreo, I was a very young Head. Primary age children. 1990s - noughties, (the decade not the children!).
I loved every minute. After 15 years, I followed my dream to buy a château in France. Kind of glad I no longer have that responsibility.
