More knife crime in Southend on sea

Daughter with grandkids in Southend has told me that Southend is in police lockdown due to gangs from east London arriving in large numbers yesterday and fighting with machetes and swords as well as knives in the high street and seafront, in broad daylight from 4pm onwards when families with children were out enjoying the weather.
They were luckily in the back garden and just saw police helicopters overhead but a friend with her children had gone to the seafront and witnessed youths brandishing machetes near Adventure Playground a place frequented by families with children which was of course heaving, she ran into a pub with the kids where the landlord ushered people inside and locked the doors.
The children were horrified and one of them had to sleep in the parents bed last night.
I have no words to describe how I feel right now……

There were six youths with machetes, as evidenced by CCTV at the seafront end of the High Street along with CCTV cameras from the amusement arcades opposite Adventure Island.

Police have not said where any of those involved come from.

Southend is not in lockdown it is subject to a Police Dispersal Order which means that if large groups of any people are found to be congregating they can be ordered to disperse and move on.

PDO’s are issued regularly round here, there was one the other week to stop travellers from holding a pony and trap meet
(Wasn’t successful as they held the meet in my road)

Thanx for the update
👍

GrannyGravy13 - are you actually trying to play this down?? Youths running around the streets wielding machetes trying to kill each other while (I think they were) Police just looking on? Is this what we’ve descended into, a country where this barely gets a mention? Where’s the condemnation of this?

I think you are being unfair to Grannygravy who is attempting to give facts and steer clear from overwrought comments. No-one is doubting the awfulness of the situation, certainly not Grannygravy.

No overwrought comments? Seems to be able to, quite rightly, condemn the behaviour in Southport perfectly adequately.

Granny gravy put my mind at rest a bit, my daughter was obviously a bit too close to it all to give a more matter of fact account.
Tbh Southend has suffered this for several summers, indeed there have been fatalities due to stabbings. Is too close to east London so there is an overspill of such criminality.
When we lived there was not like this and in fact my daughter and husband are planning to move.

Babs03 Wed 31-Jul-24 12:29:11

I do however think that granny gravy could sound a bit less like a headmistress when correcting me.
Will go to the back of the class 😂

Police Dispersal Orders are issued all the time, all over England, I’m not sure about elsewhere.
The police did not ‘just look on’.
Is there some sort of hysteria affecting certain members of GN so they can’t fact check before posting?
Thank you GG13.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 31-Jul-24 12:42:57

I live close to Southend

My AC and GC live even closer.

The CCTV is on the local MP’s X if anyone wishes to view it.

It is not comparable to the riots in Southport.

Apologies if I sound like a Headmistress, (I am not by the way)

Of course England is a tinderbox perhaps people need to get their heads out of the sand. 3 innocent little girls killed and others injured by who we don't exactly know or why. Riots in Southport. Machete fights in Southend. Riots in Leeds, chaos at Manchester Airport with police attacked, the Army major who was at stabbed. Etc etc. Frequent murders/stabbings in London and Manchester. No respect for the police. I could go on. I'm certainly concerned and worried about what is happening to my country.

I posted the facts as stated by the Police.

I apologise if you found me too brusque.

I drive the entire length of the seafront on a regularly basis (four times last week and will do later today)

I think the GB Headlines of Mass brawl misleading and inflammatory as are the posted comments after the UTube video on GB site.

High time we had water cannons!

Babs03 Wed 31-Jul-24 13:00:11

Don’t worry granny gravy I didn’t take offence at all. Tbh we all need a fact check at times.

Cossy Wed 31-Jul-24 13:07:11

I too live very close to Southend, we are in Suffolk atm.

We do have a lot of Police Dispersal Orders and due to our proximity to the East End of London we do get many people visiting, some of whom can cause issues.

Sadly it’s not a new occurrence, nor luckily on this scale not a regular occurrence.

Not comparable to the riots in Southport? How about the riots in Leeds? I personally really wouldn't want to compare, they are all simply wrong. However, still no condemnation I see?

You omitted the man who murdered the people with a crossbow. So what do you think is the common denominator?

keepingquiet Wed 31-Jul-24 13:19:48

I think the police dealt with it very effectively.

If any GN members have viewed the footage they will see that at least one of those sporting a machete was white, you could see their legs as they had shorts on.

The others were had their bodies covered, hoods up and faces covered they could have been bright blue for all we know.

I condemn the violence, but a street fight between six or seven lads is no way comparable to the riots in Southport, Leeds or anywhere else for that matter.

That's funny, but the clip I saw which I have just watched again, on X, clearly shows the Police having to stand there unable to affect anything, probably because they had no tasers and waiting for backup - who can blame them with thugs waiving machetes around, I certainly do not. But dont try to deflect from the actual event, parents having to rush their children into a pub and lock the door behind them must have been incredibly frightening. Seemingly trying to downplay 'events' like this because PDO's are issued all the time serves no-one and certainly does not excuse what happened.

No one is excusing what happened!

As you appear to have viewed at least one of the CCTV footage you will also have seen people walking past on the other side of the road, people shopping, etc,

No mass hysteria, no riots.
