I just wanted to correct misinformation given out this morning.

Contrary to the information given out.

Starmer is NOT going on holiday, whilst the current situation remains as it is.

Thank you WWM2. I think that needs to be made clear.

Cossy Sun 04-Aug-24 17:27:04

Thank you 😊

Anniebach Sun 04-Aug-24 17:35:16

I didn’t believe he would, thank you

So there isn’t a capable deputy prime minister this time round? I am pretty sure that Oliver Dowden would have stepped up if this had happened last year? There will be more problems ahead and Keir Starmer needs a strong team to help out.

Jaxjacky Sun 04-Aug-24 18:18:26

I didn’t think so for a minute, but thank you WWM2 honestly!

Babs03 Sun 04-Aug-24 18:27:22

@ronib, so you would probs have been one of the first to complain if the PM did go on holiday, but now you instead cast doubt upon his deputy instead.
Starmer does have a strong team, mainly unchanged from when in opposition because he surrounded himself with those who display the right combination of skills.
Unlike the revolving doors policy of cabinets under the Tories.
Has it occurred to you that Starmer feels duty bound to remain at this time?

Wyllow3 Sun 04-Aug-24 18:27:56

It did need to be made clear for me. Fool me, and will be cautious as regards such posts.

GreyKnitter Sun 04-Aug-24 18:31:53

I’m sure that Starmer has a very competent deputy but feels that in these extraordinary circumstances he needs to remain at the helm. A man who understands his role.

You don’t seem to understand just how serious the situation is.

Once you do perhaps you will understand as the Tory party are beginning to do to show a United front against such thuggish and dangerous behaviour.

At time like this you do NOT make political capital. We stand together.

Unless of course you are sympathetic to the thugs values, in which case I apologise

Babs03 Oliver Dowden was a safe pair of hands as deputy PM. It’s not clear that Angela Rayner has quite the right skill set to handle this type of situation.
My point is that Starmer will find himself in this position more and more and he definitely needs to be able to share the responsibility. What happens if Starmer is hospitalised for example?

Oreo Sun 04-Aug-24 18:35:44

I really can’t imagine any PM going on holiday with half the country rioting.

Oreo Sun 04-Aug-24 18:36:46

Hospitalisation is different, no choice then but for the deputy PM to step in.

I would have thought such a knowledgable person as yourself would be aware that in the event of a PM being unable to fulfil his role he nominates the most appropriate cabinet member to deal with the crisis in hand. In this event that would be Yvette Cooper. The role of Deputy Prime Minister does not mean that person is the second in command.

half of the country is NOT rioting. Hyperbole doesn’t help.

ronib Sun 04-Aug-24 18:38:12

Half the country? Oreo we are not rioting where I live.

Oreo Sun 04-Aug-24 18:39:54

But not much point being given the job as deputy if the PM doesn’t think you’re up to the job.
In any case Starmer isn’t in hospital so no point in thinking about it.

Oreo Sun 04-Aug-24 18:40:56

Sigh
Some of you are so literal.

Oreo Sun 04-Aug-24 18:42:10

How many cities and towns have rioting?
Answer quite a lot but mainly in the North.
Howzat!

Spinnaker Sun 04-Aug-24 18:44:22

Well all I can say that if it is Angela that steps in I hope she leaves that ghastly trouser suit at home grin grin

ronib Sun 04-Aug-24 18:44:36

Oreo. Leeds is okay today ….

No, being the deputy PM has never meant that you deputise for the PM in a crisis. It’s not being literal, it’s just what the job is.

Spinnaker Sun 04-Aug-24 18:45:35

That was a touch of light heartedness btw wink

ronib Sun 04-Aug-24 18:45:56

Boris managed to end up in intensive care …..

AGAA4 Sun 04-Aug-24 18:46:17

A good PM will stay at the helm when the country is in crisis.
