The Riots Have Certainly Pushed Pensioners Off The Agenda

We've definitely gone way down the list of priorities, so I expect Rachel Reeves reckons that's the Winter Fuel Allowance fiasco well and truly sorted.

Pensioners' problems shoved onto the back burner, as per usual......

The use of the word whining is really horrible. Not a pleasant way to describe other people. In the middle of all this awfulness that’s going on at the moment, there’s no need to be so insulting towards other people, who may well be much worse off than you. We won’t miss the WFA (first time I’ve written that as I’ve been trying not to upset others who will miss it) but some people are seriously worried about how they are going to pay their fuel bills this winter.

Doesn't ANYONE think there could be a hidden agenda here???
The riots are very convenient for turning everyone's attention away from everything except, well, the riots, and thinking about ways to stop them.
Which will lead to more government control, censorship (which we have already, in spades) and generally much less attention to all the things that worry so many people, such as warmth, housing, food on the table... Call this a Labour government? Wake up! Michael Foot would turn in his grave.

Cava Tue 06-Aug-24 12:03:00

Yes I think there is an agenda… and a lot of underlying problems with the riots which I think have been handled very badly by this government… a lot of people have very legitimate concerns about the state of this country which are being pushed under the table

MissAdventure Tue 06-Aug-24 12:04:13

So what exactly are you saying about the riots?

They're "made up"?

Ir ramped up, to divert attention from other things?

heavenlyheath Tue 06-Aug-24 12:07:48

Yep we are yesterdays news buried

ronib Tue 06-Aug-24 12:15:45

There will be more to be announced in the October statement so we’re definitely jumping the gun but that’s not surprising.
I would very much like to say that I have always had concerns about the non treatment of young people with types of psychosis. There’s no way of knowing what prompted a 17 year old boy to go on a killing spree. We need to wait for evidence. I can only hope that better health outcomes happen if and it’s a big if, a 17 year old boy had undiagnosed mental illness which resulted in this appalling loss of life.

MissAdventure Tue 06-Aug-24 12:18:40

The pity if it is, that element of all this has been overridden by all the other issues.

That was the implication imo sad

Richard Littlejohn has written an excellent piece today about how Labour are taking the opportunity of the riots to keep blaming “the far right” which is taking the focus off the grieving families. Despicable.

MissAdventure Tue 06-Aug-24 12:23:33

Whenever I hear "wake up, people!", I know a conspiracy theory is on it's way.

MissAdventure Tue 06-Aug-24 12:25:41

When and where have labour blamed the far right?
Genuine question, as I've not kept up with events of late.

No, it's the rioters themselves who have taken the focus away from the grieving families.

BevSec Tue 06-Aug-24 12:31:24

The FinancialTimes has reported that the Labour administration have blamed far right thugs. I would imagine Littlejohn would have double checked the veracity of his article before printing.

Iam64 Tue 06-Aug-24 12:33:53

Littlejohn is by no means an independent voice here

Some people are so entitled. No one wants to pay more tax, the Tories oversaw the highest tax rises since WW2. How do you think public services will be improved? Yes wealthy landlords and those who live off unearned income should pay more of their fair share. People rioting and burning police stations and libraries , destroying other peoples communities must be punished.

Indeed
And thanks for listing many of the factors that contributed to the financial mess.

Ronib - you aren’t alone is having been concerned about mental health services for young people and children. Sadly, the government responsible over the past 14 years removed funding.

I'll use what words I like. I'm going to struggle without the WFA.

That accusation is truly despicable.

BevSec Tue 06-Aug-24 12:45:07

What accusation? How is reporting a fact despicable?

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 06-Aug-24 12:45:18

Nowhere have I read that any party blamed the " far right" for all of these atrocities.
And the riots are orchestrated/ supported by the government?? Conspiracy theory writ large, and of course, like all such, easy to spread with no evidence whatsoever
and impossible to disprove

Iam64 Tue 06-Aug-24 12:47:30

You didn’t report ‘a fact’. You repeated a despicable untrue unproven accusation. You might agree with it but that doesn’t make it true

BevSec Tue 06-Aug-24 12:51:00

But the financial times, for one, has printed that the labour administration has blamed far right thugs. Isnt that where we all get our information from what we read in the newspapers? Why do you think its untrue?

Are you saying that newspapers never print things that are untrue? Do you never look at the front pages of the tabloids?

BevSec Tue 06-Aug-24 12:54:56

I quote “ British PM Starmer says far-right rioters will regret disorder”
