The Bibby Stockholm mentioned here was originally used to house ‘ordinary’ workers. It was good enough for those people so I’ve never understood the fuss about it Obviously a luxury cruise ship it’s not.
I think, but am not sure, that the issue was overcrowding.
I understand asylum seekers are supposed to be grateful for whatever they are given by us, but human nature is such that if you put people together in close quarters, with very little to do, and more importantly, without any idea of how long they are going to be cooped up - weeks, months, even years - then overcrowding will become a problem because whatever your view on asylum seekers / illegals / whatever you want to call them, they are still human.
The 'ordinary' workers were housed there for a definite period - they knew when their work period would end and, equally important - they were out working during the day (or night, whatever)... they were occupied. And they were free to go where they liked when they liked. Most people can put up with basic accommodation under those conditions.
And it's not 'bleeding-heart' leftie nonsense (just in case) to acknowledge basic human psychology.
