Heartening to see such a turn out of people saying " Not in my name" The thugs scurrying back under their rocks, for now at least.
KS knows his way aroud the system and has acted swiftly.

I’d like to read it too Doodle. Many thanksthanks

Casdon, if you sense sarcasm, maybe you think it’s deserved.
I was simply praising the way things have been dealt with in the light of the announcements of shock about, e.g. prison places and police shortages.
You can rely on the Brits to rise to the occasion under the most difficult circumstances. QED

Casdon Thu 08-Aug-24 17:35:22

No, Mollygo I just have a radar. don’t think any sarcasm is deserved at all.

What we don't need is councillors making stupid, ill-considered remarks like this.....and the crowd cheered.

Do I think he really wants people to go out and slit throats? Most unlikely I'd have thought so why say such a thing?

It's on the Riots In Stockport thread. I've already been told off for posting it, so if you can find it on there it might save blood pressures from rising grin. If not, I'll put it up again.

LizzieDrip Thu 08-Aug-24 17:54:10

Thanks Doodle👍

Yes, I’ve just seen it on the other thread - along with the rather un-called for ‘telling off’. We did ask you to copy & paste the article … so thank you.

Doodledog Thu 08-Aug-24 18:10:29

I aim to please grin

Wyllow3 Thu 08-Aug-24 18:22:25

You are quite right to pull the councillor up on that Rosie51
The suspension quite right.

Will nip over else thread Doodle thanks.

Wyllow3 Thu 08-Aug-24 18:30:36

(The councillor was also arrested. Without fear nor favour)

that article was one of the best I've read for a long time Doodle

If he is charged with incitement to murder, (the press seemed to be using the phrase encouraging murder, am unsure of the difference), but either way that would be a serious prison sentence if found guilty, what an idiot.

HomeAgain123 Sat 10-Aug-24 11:44:34

Let’s just hope he can understand the reason behind the peaceful’ protests that were also happening and act on concerns.

knspol Sat 10-Aug-24 11:47:51

I sincerely hope that now the riots will stop. Seems that year after year summer riots start for any excuse whatsoever. I totally agree with the speedy court appearances and sentencing and think it's a job well done.
However it does make me wonder whether there are enough prison places for these offenders and whether even more criminals will now be released onto our streets to make way for them.
My other query is if this speedy response can be enacted in this case then why not in other cases too? We hear of murderers and rapists and others being held or bailed for very long periods before they are finally brought to court and several get very minimal terms compared to these thugs.

I was very impressed by an Imam speaking on the BBC this morning.
He was handing out food to the would be rioters outside his mosque.
Some were shaking his hand.
He has invited anybody who wants to know about Muslims and what they believe in to the mosque tonight and food will be available.
I felt admiration and at the same time shame that Muslim people are afraid to go out at times like these.

Wyllow3 Sat 10-Aug-24 12:02:03

The answer to that lies in a huge backlog on cases being brought to court, built up over years, meaning that victims have to wait a long time. Literally impossible to do for everyone in the system.

Special measures were employed for the rioters as it was regarded as a nationwide threat to communities at the highest level.

"We hear of murderers and rapists and others being held or bailed for very long periods before they are finally brought to court and several get very minimal terms compared to these thugs".

This is because those cases are brought before a Crown Court not the magistrates courts. Can't comment on the sentences as dont know examples to compare.

Someone has posted a detailed answer to this on another of the 'riot' threads, but, briefly. The reason that these cases have been concluded rapidly is that the defendants all pleaded guilty. there was no need for time for evidence to e gathered and each case put to the DPP.

The sentences are heavy because that is what is allowed under the relevant legislation, mostly passed by the tories in the past few years.

👏👏👏

Good to see. There have been interfaith initiatives for years but this doesn't reach the news as it doesnt get out to the public as a whole.

Due process of law demands that anyone accused of a crime who enters a plea of "not guilty " may be bailed, because the police and the Crime Prosecution Service must have time to gather evidence to present at trial.
If you or I were accused of a crime we would wish this to happen, I expect, as it would allow us to consult with our legal representatives.
The rioters seem to have clear evidence ( cctv et al) and have, mostly, agreed to plead guilty- so, no trial needed, straight to sentencing.

I think two or three things influence this:-

1) evidence in the riots was very easily traced
2) Many gave a plea of guilty
3) this had to be quick to prevent further disruption

I think in the cases of serious violent crimes people are held on remand whilst really good evidence is acquired and witnesses therefore this can take a lot police time and resource hence the delays. The CPP will want watertight evidence to get a conviction.
