When Labour came to power, I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt, some good decisions were made such as James Timpson appointed Minister of prisons, I was feeling positive.
However, as my husband predicted, it wouldn’t last.
Removing the winter fuel allowance and the cap on nursing home fees was dreadful but her latest move is beyond comprehension.
Angela Rayner has dropped Tory plans to limit applications for social housing to long-term British residents.
The Housing Secretary has formally scrapped reforms that would have prevented recently arrived migrants from applying for a council house in England.
Enough is enough!
The days are long gone here of being offered three properties!!
Sharon, undines, just to reiterate- no one supports uncontrolled immigration, and no posts have suggested this. It is simply untrue.
Oh MissA, if only there were three LA properties available!
Yes, exactly.
It's all private rentals here, at extortionate prices.

Despite what people may say about our 'democracy' and this government having been 'voted in' the truth is we do not have true democracy. This government was elected by about a third of the people, and I'm willing to bet about half of them only wanted the Tories out. Now they are acting as if they have a massive mandate to do exactly what they want and the signs are very alarming. The people of Britain who want more control of immigration have no voice at all. People are seeing their communities destroyed and their compatriots sleeping in shop doorways, while some often dubious characters are welcomed and given housing and benefits, no question. This resentment is behind the recent unrest. Please note I DO NOT CONDONE VIOLENCE, before anyone screams 'fascist' at me. But it's not fair to brand as fascist anyone who objects to uncontrolled immigration. The facts, as always, can be hard to determine. But anyone who supports uncontrolled immigration and expects communities to open up and welcome crowds of single males (and yes, we are often not talking families, not talking actual refugees) should be prepared to have a hostel opened up next door, and see how they feel about young men from cultures that may be more brutal, roaming about, not integrating, and causing unease (at the least) to their own daughters and sons, and bringing down the value of their property into the bargain.
I'm in complete agreement !
Immigration is controlled. Asylum Seekers are not! They are left for months “unprocessed”, we came out of the EU so cannot get much help from them, Asylum Seekers make up Approx 11% of our total immigration each year, equal to Approx 2% of our population.
They are not to blame for all the woes of our country.
Undines, I too am in complete agreement.

Throughout my life I always voted Labour but not this time, all they seemed to do in opposition was criticise the Conservative gov whilst being very non commital about their own policies, but what has surprised me is how quickly the Chancellor axed the Winter Fuel Allowance but at the same time appeased the BMA by giving young doctors a 22% rise!! Socialists they are not!! 🙁😢
The reference to young Jen from brutal cultures roaming about….. bringing down the value of property has to be up there looking for most offensive comment on a thread full of nastiness
Apologies - young men not jen

Yes is totally offensive and tbh it wasn’t young men from brutal cultures causing all the riots recently, though defining brutal cultures could be problematic inasmuch as there are violent crimes in every country/culture. It could of course refer to brutal regimes, as in Iran, but the actual populations of these countries are the ones being brutalised not the ones actually being brutal.

It is also not true and in line with the sort of propaganda that Farage is putting out - and what apparently is being looked at by the security services according to recently retired police commissioner, along with the rhetoric of Patel and Braverman.
The trouble is that we have become habituated by this false narrative snd so often let it pass without pushing back and calling it out for what it is - untrue and usually with racist undertones.
This is what
I wonder how "they " can come here and take our jobs and simulaneously roam around?
Also now are " they" supposed to learn English when the courses are not available to them?
And how to " intergrate" when met with hostility?
Posted too soon.
That is why the concept of “lawful harmful” is being revisited.
Farage etc know the law and will skilfully keep from stepping over the law, whilst using their malign influence by using populist rhetoric, which like the post under question has often a small element of truth but it is twisted in such a way that it is causing division in our society.

Exactly.
They don’t ever join the dots, like a woman I heard on a talk radio show with some fellow called O’Brien the other day. She kept saying that these immigrants are taking all our houses then in the same breath was complaining about how many are currently kept in detention centres. As the O’Brien fellow then asked her ‘how are all these immigrants being kept in detention centres if you say they are all being given houses?’
It was remarkable, even a toddler could knock holes in their arguments.
Cadeby, in my school, just before retirement a number of staff were local and knew our families well.
One extended family had negative views of our local Eastern Europeans.
The children would explain to me that these people " take our jobs"
Usually, I replied that I was sorry to hear that their family member had lost his/ her job, and ask what was their work?
I do know that the adults in this group were rarely in employment because they were, all, a martyr to " bad backs".

The thing is that these people spouting such nonsense do not live in a vacuum and are getting this rhetoric from somewhere.
That somewhere are the influencers like Farage, Braverman and Patel.

Sadly, I agree
Also now are " they" supposed to learn English when the courses are not available to them?
One reason given on GN for them coming to the UK is that they can speak English.
One thing that has improved since the 70s is that most of the men no longer prevent their wives from going out to work or to socialise, so that they can learn the language.
Back in the 70s in Liverpool, we ran classes in school- time where Mums in hijabs would drop their children off and stay in to practice English conversation.
We learnt from them that they weren’t allowed night school classes and sometimes the confinement at home was caused by MILs who wanted to keep their DILs under control.
Often people will try to get here because of the language. Either due to our colonial past or the influence of the English language via social media, many people seeking asylum have some English.
Trying to up it to a professional level can prove a challenge. Also there are those who have a better standard of English than some of the indiginous population.
