And I wouldn't like to be in Rachel Reeves shoes......or Sir Keir it'll-get-worse-before-it-gets-better Starmer's. šŸ¤”

I am so pleased that things will soon be back to normal. This has not been a honeymoon period, but a snipefest, with speculation and supposition in abundance. At least now we should find out what is actually going to happen and listen to the whys and wherefores. The media will still moan, but at least the government will have a chance to refute spurious claims and downright lies.

Let`s hope that there are some free-thinking spirits who will take the pm to task.

Siope Sun 01-Sept-24 06:11:25

For what, karmalady?

I think the regime has mismanaged its approach almost from day one. I hope they learn quickly from their mistakes. We don’t want more riots and social unrest. Fingers crossed.

Absolutely!!!

You’re blaming the LP for the riots?

I’ve heard it all now.

What short short memories some people have!

Aldom Sun 01-Sept-24 07:33:43

Doodledog a well balanced, sensible post, as always.

Cossy Starmer and Reeves have an inflammatory way of talking- it’s full of emotion and is simply depressing and very downbeat. It might not be the best drum to beat.

Babs03 Sun 01-Sept-24 07:40:12

I suppose a less committed government could have insisted upon a recess these past few weeks rather than cancelling all leave and getting down to business.
Fact is there hasn’t been a honeymoon period for Labour and am sure they will be only to glad to continue the hard work as other parties come back from their holidays and resume normal service.

M0nica Sun 01-Sept-24 07:41:42

The riots, were a misplaced response to an attack on a group of children, which were fanned into action by Far right opportunists and conspiracy theorists.

I am struggling to draw a connection between that and the govenment. Are you suggesting Ronib that if the discredited Conservative party had still been in power these riots would not have happened? if so can you explain why you think that?

ronib Sun 01-Sept-24 07:46:58

Monica yes I do believe that the new government mishandled the Stockport tragedy. Very inexperienced people at the helm and unable to get to grips with a very fast moving tragedy.

Yes I get that, but if you’d prefer the ā€œbuffooneryā€ of Johnston or the recklessness of Teust, that’s up to you.

I’d rather hear straight facts, however depressing it is, it’s called being honest!

I don’t agree, but I’m interested in what you think they should have done?

*Truss!

Cossy Sunak really wasn’t that bad after all - just a bit of an innocent and not politically savvy.
I don’t know if there’s anything like a straight fact in politics. All I think is that the current bunch are in danger of annoying anyone stupid enough to listen to them every time they speak.

ā€œStupid enough to listen to what they sayā€

How very patronising!

That would be me then, and many other GNs!

Cossy Labour still has its L plates on.

Babs03 Labour certainly did not cancel all leave. Angela Rayner was having a great rave in Ibiza. Only Starmer made a big deal of not going on holiday to prove his commitment.

I certainly don’t think Sunak was in any way an ā€œinnocentā€ He worked in the cut throat hedge fund arena and he was chancellor prior to being PM! Nave maybe, innocent and not politically savvy, def not!

Cossy Sun 01-Sept-24 08:44:12

Naive! Edit button pleeeeeez !

ronib Sun 01-Sept-24 08:48:05

Cossy Sunak couldn’t read the runes. There’s no way the election should have been held in July, unless Sunak needed to take a summer holiday…

Witzend Sun 01-Sept-24 08:58:31

Personally I think the riots were handled well.

When parliament is back, personally I’m looking forward to some demands from Labour benches that their new MP and ex council leader who didn’t bother to register his own grotty flats, should resign. Especially - FGS - when the lack of decent, affordable housing is such a major issue.

But I’m not holding my breath.

kittylester Sun 01-Sept-24 09:01:38

Going to be exciting.

Doodledog Sun 01-Sept-24 09:17:49

I am looking forward to it too. PMQs, the Sunday politics show (Laura K) and Peston on a Wednesday are amongst my favourite things on TV. Whichever side I’m on, I like wanting to throw things at the tellyšŸ˜€.

Oh dear, those kind of insults have often been thrown at Tory and Reform voters but now they are being thrown back. 🤭
