And I wouldn't like to be in Rachel Reeves shoes......or Sir Keir it'll-get-worse-before-it-gets-better Starmer's. 🤔

Wyllow3 Sun 01-Sept-24 09:29:15

I don't think any government could have prevented the Riots and I think the government handed them very well by working closely with he police. I think it's easy to forget just how horrible that period was, and the revelations about who fanned the flames on Social Media.

They also, as early as feasible, dealt with the long standing and frequent strikes.

Keir Starmer didnt make a big deal about "not going on holiday", it was the press, and as for other MP holidays, are we due for a list of who went where just to attempt to denigrate?
I didnt and dont agree with the extent of cutting GFA and hope we can change that and of course any MP's who have broken a code, whichever arty they are from, has to be disciplined..

Sunak left the country in a right mess, although I don't blame him for the situation he inherited. I think he called a flash election because of the state of affairs looming and I think he knew he wouldn't be there to have to deal with them.

I'm looking forward to the return of parliament too and hopefully a well organised opposition under an effective leader.

Oh, that’s alright then. Tit for tat has always been a sensible and mature way to settle differences. Ner ner ne ner ner!

Doodledog Sun 01-Sept-24 09:31:06

Aarrgghh! I try not to do too much nested quoting and you can guarantee that when I don’t I cross post. That was to Chestnut - sorry Wyllow!

I think the regime has mismanaged its approach almost from day one. I hope they learn quickly from their mistakes. We don’t want more riots and social unrest. Fingers crossed.

Agreed.

Grandmabatty Sun 01-Sept-24 09:33:27

It would be nice if both sides could focus on actual facts rather than sneers and innuendoes. When I see some posts, I don't have to look far for the politics of the poster because they never change, not offer an unbiased approach. I suppose the OP set out their stall from the start and those who agree jumped in vigorously, but it doesn't support debate, just dissension.

Guess this Labour MP will be keeping a very low profile

Renting out disgusting flats without necessary permission.

I am happy the grown-up government is back. We got so used to childish behaviour we didn't know how to respond when the grown-ups came back.

I'm not a huge fan of Starmer but I do believe he has a lot of what the Tories were lacking; intelligence.

In this country we've treated intelligent and educated people with disdain, now I think it is time to get some maturity and adult thinking back in Westminster.

It is not going to be easy but Starmer seems a man unphased by the flak- long may it remain that way.

eazybee Sun 01-Sept-24 09:41:46

The media will still moan, but at least the government will have a chance to refute spurious claims and downright lies.

The media is certainly speculating in the face of Starmer's minatory pronouncements; when he says things will get worse before they get better obviously that provokes discussion. How does anyone know the claims are downright lies?

It’s called discussion.

Monica yes I do believe that the new government mishandled the Stockport tragedy. Very inexperienced people at the helm and unable to get to grips with a very fast moving tragedy.

I don’t agree, but I’m interested in what you think they should have done?

Should have come out with an informative press release, and proper information, and ask peopleto respect the family wishes ..
No they did not put people right, just let them come to their own, wrong conclusions. Chap from India, now arrested for allegedly stirring the riot pot.

Oreo Sun 01-Sept-24 09:54:51

Oh no, not all this silly ‘the grown ups are back in the room’ stuff trotted out.
Tories lacking intelligence? Sounds childish to me.
We all support different politics and not only the two main ones which is going to lead to having different opinions. What I can’t stand is posters being so partisan that their own side can do no wrong in their eyes and every politician and every policy being fiercely defended by them.Haven’t we all learned by now that they all have feet of clay?
My own feeling is that Starmer and Reeves are doing too much too soon and are getting some things wrong.
Cutting WFA which many people relied on with Autumn and Winter soon to be here, jailing far too many people, wanting no smoking in pub gardens, paying eye watering amounts to public servants and bringing back austerity measures.

ronib Sun 01-Sept-24 09:56:56

Freya5 thanks.

As regards the riots, they were being organised on social media long before the police and therefore the government were able to release the correct information early evening.

There was a complete furore of violent incitement going round social media all afternoon.

Were they listening for and to the truth? No. People had already set out for Southport

. And even tho the truth did come out, the rioting and the incitement continued. The government did as best a job it could.

Wyllow3 Sun 01-Sept-24 10:19:53

People might like to know that the new discussions on limiting smoking and vaping were actually a Sunak government initiative (based on advice from Chris Whitty)

The Labour government will resurrect Rishi Sunak's flagship smoking ban, which was shelved before the election

MPs voted to support the ban in April, with Labour backing the bill in the House of Commons

sky news July 2024

Also
Sunak 'disappointed' smoking ban bill did not get through
(before elections)
25th May

"The PM said he "stepped up to do something that is bold" over his bid to phase out smoking. But the bill is one of those that will not get debated, or voted. on, before Parliament closes on Friday ahead of the general election.
Some bills will fail to make it in time in the so-called wash-up period and it will be up to the next government whether to take action"

Sunak got it wrong too in my view.

Wyllow3 Sun 01-Sept-24 10:24:54

Details are far from clear - best to wait to see what they are away from the rumours of what will actually happen as we've been presented with speculation so far. A major concern is the huge growth in teenager vaping

Vaping is the real danger, kids allowed to have become addicted and nothing done about it.
Pubs have spent money making parts of their outside space/ gardens for smokers, with patio heaters and all sorts. If it did become illegal to smoke there that’s another dagger in the heart for all pubs which many are struggling already.

Polar22 Sun 01-Sept-24 11:13:50

What honeymoon?!! We all knew the minute they won the media and their cronies would be sticking the knife in. I’d guess Keir and his team are very aware of what was going to happen when they removed the WFA. They’re not stupid. There will be a plan to ease the hit on those on the margin between PC and financial ease. I’d guess they have asked the energy providers to give some kind of allowance? Why shouldn’t they? They get enough profit so it wouldn’t hurt. Let’s see if I’m right. Roll on October. Oh and so far I think they’re fabulous. Such a refreshing change from the last lot.

Agreed. It is a stupid idea and it will be the final straw for many pubs if this goes through.

They are doing this so they are seen to be doing something. Far more important things to do.

Babs03 Sun 01-Sept-24 11:33:01

Tribalism is fine, we have an adversarial political system, but just as the Tories were gracious in defeat and gracious in wishing Labour well, we need to at least give this lot a few paltry months before sticking the knife in, after all the last lot had 14 years.
Personally am glad that Labour won, even Tories knew at the end that their party needed to retreat and find its identity again.

Most of Sunak's law was related to the protection of young people and age of purchasing products. Quite complex law.

In terms of where to smoke and vape the pub scenario is only one of the areas mentioned as ??

but the one seized on by all critics. Possible areas mentioned include outside hospitals and schools, children's play and sports areas. It's wrong to assume as things stand pubs will be hit. Personally I dont think they should be but lets wait and see.

Cossy Starmer and Reeves have an inflammatory way of talking- it’s full of emotion and is simply depressing and very downbeat. It might not be the best drum to beat.

On the contrary, I find both of them calm and measured in the way they speak. Whether you are happy with what they are saying is a different thing of course, and it does depend upon who is reporting what has been said.

I am looking forward to it too. PMQs, the Sunday politics show (Laura K) and Peston on a Wednesday are amongst my favourite things on TV. Whichever side I’m on, I like wanting to throw things at the telly😀.

Me too!
