And I wouldn't like to be in Rachel Reeves shoes......or Sir Keir it'll-get-worse-before-it-gets-better Starmer's. 🤔

Why do people keep on saying that vaping is the real danger?

Details are far from clear - best to wait to see what they are away from the rumours of what will actually happen as we've been presented with speculation so far. A major concern is the huge growth in teenager vaping

Vaping is the real danger, kids allowed to have become addicted and nothing done about it.
Pubs have spent money making parts of their outside space/ gardens for smokers, with patio heaters and all sorts. If it did become illegal to smoke there that’s another dagger in the heart for all pubs which many are struggling already.

I agree that children vaping is what worries me the most. The flavours are attracting them but the flavours are dangerous. Then the nicotine hooks them very quickly. The thought of children being helplessly addicted to anything so dangerous is very upsetting. That is what needs to be urgently addressed, but we know how difficult it is for adults to quit so how will children manage it? The ones already hooked will probably need addiction therapy.

Do agree that KS and RR need to change their style. We know that they can't do all they would like or even all they promised, but we also know that the black hole is probably less deep than they now say. And they must know that we know. We now need to hear clearly what they are going to do. Party conference season in a few weeks which is another muzzler.

Vaping was meant to get adults, already addicted to smoking to switch to a less harmful method, and from that to be able to give up altogether. What happened was kids taking it up attracted to all the kid friendly flavours thus making addicts of them.Smoking had already become less popular but then vaping came along and became the trend.
In some countries vaping is only on prescription to get adults off cigarettes.

I agree.
So far it’s only been talk from them about some things but am hoping they take the pulse of the nation before committing to some policies.

Polar22 I’d guess Keir and his team are very aware of what was going to happen when they removed the WFA. They’re not stupid. There will be a plan to ease the hit on those on the margin between PC and financial ease.

Do you not think it would be more sensible then to have announced at the same time as the removal announcement that there was such a plan and thus save many pensioners from very real worry and concern?

Wyllow3 Sun 01-Sept-24 13:29:54

There's a positive health measure quietly being rolled out as a pilot to see how effective it is:

"Public health: Life-saving NHS check to benefit 130,000 people"

These are MOT's offered at work free, confidential and not compulsory.

www.nationalhealthexecutive.com/articles/public-health-life-saving-nhs-check-benefit-130000-people

(Last bit I'm aware of public health wise: Chris Whitty and Sunak were also considering banning fast food ads until 9pm when it became clear how many children are obese, this is still as far as I'm aware on the table.

Just why do they need such long holidays?

Grantanow Mon 02-Sept-24 14:43:04

Oh yes, it's Rishi's swan song. I wonder who will succeed him. At least it won't be Truss.

I agree actually: it's a historical timetable that doesn't really match the needs of the present.

I am looking forward to it too. PMQs, the Sunday politics show (Laura K) and Peston on a Wednesday are amongst my favourite things on TV. Whichever side I’m on, I like wanting to throw things at the telly😀.

Me too!

Me too. I like Question Time as well but I find Fiona Bruce can be a bit biased at times.

No honeymoon period for some of us as they quickly stopped Winter Fuel Payments. Labour have started as they mean to go on and it will get worse...before it gets worse

It’s not a “holiday” It’s a recess of Parliament. Most MPs will take a break of up to two weeks, maybe abroad, maybe not, and then spend the rest of the time doing the second part of their role, supporting and seeing their constituents.

Wyllow3 Mon 02-Sept-24 15:43:51

True, cossy, that describes my MP, and I don't know how it can be worked out, but some decisions and events this summer imo needed parliamentary debate.

They probably didn't have a plan then.

They have somehow found the money to pay for 15 hours of childcare per week for families on up to (but not including) £100,00 p.a.

They know who to appeal to for the votes in future and it is not pensioners, many of whom may not be around to vote in five years' time.

Cynical? Perhaps.

I am just above the level for getting any help with the winter fuel help. I am willing to do without it, even though I am still struggling to stay warm after covid. I believe in this government and am willing to help any way I can.

Yes, I'd like to see Emily Maitlis take over the QT chair.

You are indeed a very understanding lady. I applaud you and your attitude.

With any luck, there will be something put in place to mitigate the withdrawal of the WFA. I hope so, albertina.

An announcement was made yesterday or this morning that the council funding for vulnerable people until April 2025.

Like many others I wish this could have been announced sooner and that the withdrawal of WFA could have been deferred until end of 2025

Cossy Mon 02-Sept-24 19:14:21

Sorry, I’m very tired! That should say councils will be funded to extend their packages of help until April 2025!

Cossy Sunak really wasn’t that bad after all - just a bit of an innocent and not politically savvy.
I don’t know if there’s anything like a straight fact in politics. All I think is that the current bunch are in danger of annoying anyone stupid enough to listen to them every time they speak.

“Stupid enough to listen to what they say”

How very patronising!

That would be me then, and many other GNs!

Oh dear, those kind of insults have often been thrown at Tory and Reform voters but now they are being thrown back. 🤭

👏👏👏👏👏👏

Maitlis is as left wing as they come. No bias there then !!
