And it it any wonder - chopping Winter Fuel Payments, the 25% discount on Council Tax looks like that's going out the window (and bus passes aren't safe) but at least the PM and his Missus will be well dressed while all this is being inflicted on the goodly voters.......76,000 quids worth of freebies.

To those that already have plenty even more will be given.

The rest of us will have to queue up at the Parish Workhouse.

Casdon Sun 22-Sept-24 10:01:42

I agree ronib, that is right and proper. I think I’ll go and scream like Violet Elizabeth Bott in a corner if anybody trots out the percentage vote again though - if they think it’s unfair they should be lobbying for an alternative voting system, which probably won’t ever see any party in government without a coalition again. As they say, you pays your money and you takes your choice.

ronib Sun 22-Sept-24 10:03:53

Casdon I think coalition is preferable but…..

but… there would never be a Tory government again either?

I don’t know about PR, I’m very much on the fence.

Jackiest Sun 22-Sept-24 10:17:40

A coalition can prevent a party doing fully what they want to achieve but looking back at the governments we have had maybe that would be a good thing.

That kitten needs worming!

Mollygo Sun 22-Sept-24 11:32:27

^ We all know that means nothing in the UK democracy though Mollygo, don’t we?
You can’t blame Labour for being in power when that’s how our democracy works. Governments virtually never govern with a majority of of over 50% do they?^

Absolutely!
I don’t blame Labour for being in power, any more than I blamed Conservatives for being in power.
Labour got into power because we weren’t happy with Conservatives.
Conservatives got back into power because we weren’t happy with Labour.
Now Labour are back in power because we weren’t happy with the Conservatives.

The main difference now is that Governments aren’t happy because we know so much more quickly about what they get wrong. We know about behaviour that is excused by it’s in the rules that will give them extra benefits
and maybe even allow the donors extra benefits.
Add to that the implementation of actions a government condemned when it was proposed by the government they replaced, with the evidence still clearly there on the internet or saved on people’s devices.

And while I dislike percentages being used to prove things like pay rises, a vast majority 1 in 5 or 20% is funny.

Coalitions only work when a country is facing a common enemy, usually in war.
Lib/Lab/Green? The very worst of all combinations.

KS might be up in the polls if he had put some ink on the cats paw and let him wander over that paperwork.
We would probably all end up better off 🤣

There's a delightful picture in The Sunday Times today of Sir Keir looking debonair in the controversial spectacles along with new addition to the Starmer family household, a kitten called Prince, presumably that moniker being a nod to post election jubilation in the stupendous swing to Labour and Sir Keir "partying like it was 1999", before it all went south when the shit hit the fan the waters became somewhat troubled. Now that we are told the freebies have been withdrawn I'm somewhat worried that there might not be an adequate food supply for Prince, and he will have to fight tooth and claw with Larry for a share of his. Lets hope that this won't be the case, Larry as we know doesn't have the benevolent nature of Lord Alli as regards to dishing out favours, probably because there won't be anything in it for him because, well it's not in his nature and he's probably reached that world weary stage of "I'm just sick of the lot of them"

Also partying like it was 1999 was a certain Bridget Philllipson, Education Secretary, who was the recipient of £14,000 bunged her way for her 40th, by err. who was that again? oh yes the omnipresent ever benevolent Lord Alli. Well hopefully that should have paid for a few canapes a whole pile of iced party rings not forgetting a glass or two of Bollinger to wash it all down with. Well you know how it is, as expressed so eloquently by Frank in Shameless they know how to party Anyway, it was all quite acceptable, we're reliably informed, because very important people were there allegedly, such as Peter "you'll find me relaxing on my friend the oligarch's yacht with George Osborne" Mandelson.
I

think many of us will celebrate the fact that philanthropy is alive and in Lord Alli who is doing his utmost in giving a generous helping hand to the needy. Although I was rather baffled to read in The Guardian a couple of days ago, that when asked about him some Labour aides had just the one word to describe him and according to that article it was too rude to print in their esteemed publication. Whatever can they mean confused

Casdon Sun 22-Sept-24 13:20:21

Seriously TerriBull, as a parent of teenagers were you ever allowed to choose the name of one of your animals yourself? One of our cats ended up being called Monster. Teenagers don’t believe in democratic naming, and certainly not in their father making the decision.

Mollygo Sun 22-Sept-24 13:31:15

TerriBull
You paint a worrying picture of Larry’s future because of Prince.

Gummie Sun 22-Sept-24 18:34:05

He's a money grabbing, lying, evil, hypocrite and the sooner he and his cronies are gone the better. Sadly we are stuck with him for at least 5 years.

He wasn't voted in my by a massive majority of voters. Our first past the post system does not depict the majority. They actually had fewer votes that the Corbyn era, but fools voted for reform instead of Tory and reduced the Tory vote.

Casdon Sun 22-Sept-24 18:41:11

I’d be a bit more decisive in my opinion if I was you Gummie there’s no need to sit on the fence you know!

I've just spend hours today tying to get home from Blackpool on the train Yet again train after train being cancelled Pretty routine these days and very dangerous part of the journey spent on the one train ruñning a bit of the way and so overcrowded but mums and babies and toddlers risking being crushed Apparently drivers don't want to do overtime When are labour going to do something useful like get new drivers to work weekends

mae13 Mon 23-Sept-24 04:18:57

Now Sir Keir has a kitten he can always pop up at Prime Ministers' Questions and say "but the kitten ate my homework"......

ronib Mon 23-Sept-24 05:56:38

It’s good to see that Starmer has opted for the James Bond villain look- at least it’s credible. We now know the direction of travel.

nanna8 Mon 23-Sept-24 06:26:44

Poor cat being used as a political prop.

Allsorts Mon 23-Sept-24 07:05:40

The only good things in No 10 is the cats. Hope they get on. Larry is in cargo obviously but tge new kitten is adorable, can't say the same about its owner.
Of course Keir and co said no to the freebies, the houses must be full. Just why a multi millionaire needs them is beyond me, he must be as tight as a tick. Perhaps some pet firm will donate food for Prince.

That's what happens when Gov gives in to the Unions, a pay rise with no conditions. Stinks.
