Lord Waheed Alli, has he bought the government?

This man seems to have his tentacles everywhere, another story now of him loaning £1.2 million to Siobhan McDonagh.

I fear there is more to come.

How can a government be honest and upright if the MP’s are in Lord Alli’s pocket?

I think it's fair enough, pretty standard in discussions, when someone makes a contentious point in news and politics threads, such as

" but he does want a state run press/media, and anyone who wants to take freedoms away from the public makes my blood run cold."

To request information and references on the source of that point.

Look forward to your link.

Have you looked up the link I gave you yet?

If I missed a web ref link, I would be most grateful for you to repeat what I've missed.

Indeed Anniebach, he's not an outsider drifted in once wealthy or even recently in order to gain perks: he was made a peer in the late 1990's. He's a committed insider.

I have just been on a google and Compared to Hestor's 15 million:

"In total the 59-year-old television entrepreneur has donated £500,000 to Labour over the past two decades but had mostly remained a background figure in the party". (Evening standard)

"Politically his main interventions of significance in the H of L was made in the late 1990’s when he was first made a peer and were on gay rights, and he has said he regards it as his main legacy". (The Times)

A real baddie then - Not

I like Lord Alli. He could be a good person.

I don't know if he is or isn't ronib but he does want a state run press/media, and anyone who wants to take freedoms away from the public makes my blood run cold.

What on earth are you referring to Namsnanny?

but he does want a state run press/media and anyone who wants to take freedoms away from the public

like no Daily mail, Guardian, GB news, etc etc, one star run media source like Russia?

Frankly, I dont believe you. Reliable references, please, if you are going to make that kind of allegation and have credibility.

Frankly I dont believe you

A bit hyperbolic don't you think Wyllow grin

BTW you may remember you became very upset with either me or other posters a while ago, lets try not to become antagonistic and upset each other, it doesn't bode well imv.

As for links refer to one of his speeches in the HOL.

I've been a while, watching a very intriguing program about Kamal Harris ancestry, very engrossing smile.

I think you have behaved out of anger because you have over invested a lot of emotion into your political view of life.

I happen to think that given your behaviour towards me, I would be very justified in countering your accusations, anger and your insufferable entitlement, by using similar rhetoric back at you.
But what would that achieve?

You have accused me of lying whilst a another poster confirmed my words, just took a different interpretation.

You've fallen for the old adage of shooting the messenger.

I didn't quite understand your bit about the newspapers.

Speaking of newspapers, do you know how many journalists have been arrested under the terrorism act in this country?

Or how they lose their rights to inform people of what has happened to them?
Or how harrowing it is to be kept in jail for an unlimited time, just because they can.

No of course not, because it isn't reported by the main stream media.
Which is one reason why I'm concerned and always have been, about the tightening up of free speech.
Whether it be on line or what can be reported in the news.

Without freedom of speech and action there is no true life, and although I understand you cannot see this from my perspective, because it is so important, I would implore you to try.

As I said any attempt to close down those freedoms chills me to the bone.

Have you read any recent immigrants life stories about the countries they have come from?
Russia, China, North Korea, parts of Africa, Poland after the war?

The people I have read are all singing from the same hymn book.
In their own words they are pointing out how political and social changes in this country are beginning to mirror what they escaped from.

So sorry I won't be harassed or harangued to 'give links' and not just that but reliable ones too.

Are you the arbiter of what is and isn't reliable now?
Especially as you have made your mind up that I am a liar.
What would be the point?

Under the circumstances it's laughable that you question my credibility.
On an anonymous website, where you (or I) could be pretending to be anyone?

I have been on here a while, I have never reported anyone, or been reported. I have never changed my name or used a second one. Neither have I requested my posts be taken down.

I've always hoped that people could check out things I've said in the past and form an opinion, or ask me about the posts I've made.

I think I have been naive though, people don't remember much, except what upsets them.

So to round up.
I think if LA turns out to be a knight in shining armour and underpins free speech in any way, I shall sing his praises all the day long.
Lord knows there aren't many willing to put their shoulder to the wheel in the name of freedom of speech and actions for all, and even fewer millionaires.
Time will tell.

The Conservative Party doesn’t have donations ?

Frank Hester alone donated a total of 15 million, yes, 15 million pounds.

And this is the same Frank Hester who made some pretty vile remarks about black women and Diane Abbott in particular.

But even after he was exposed the Tory Party went on to accept a further 5 million donation.

My word, but there's a man determined to buy a life peerage when Rishi Sunak draws up his resignation Honours List......

Indeed!

For me, until I see otherwise, LA simply seems like a self-made millionaire with left leaning politics, who has a great interest in maintaining rights for Gay people. So far, I’ve seen nothing at all to make me think he wants to stifle freedom of speech.

I’m always just a little wary of those who say don’t believe MSM (yes, we all know most is biased) but then refuse to give sources or links.

If one isn’t getting info from MSM, where is it coming from?

Most of us do take our info from a number of different media sources, to get a balance, but where can we find all the other sources which aren’t MSM??

Cossy Fri 27-Sept-24 10:10:02

I had a very quick search and all I can find is something in the DM and something from GB news and a quote from Jacob Rees Mogg, all commenting on LA wanting to “muzzle the press”, what I cannot find is his HoL speech specifically outlining his desire to control the media or to have just one govt led news outlet.

Even if he is advocating this, which I think is unlikely, it’s even more unlikely that the LP will seek to instigate this. (In my humble opinion) Just wondering g if it’s possible he’s being quoted with no context?

So what do you think Labour peer Alli is getting in return for his generosity, eazybee?

This is what I was wondering.

Wyllow3 Fri 27-Sept-24 10:30:50

Yes, the D Mail speculated

"STEPHEN GLOVER: What does Lord Alli want for his largesse? He's no fan of the free Press and it would be an outrage if he asked Labour to muzzle it"

Alli himself and the Labour Party - I've been a member for years - have never ever put this idea forward or heard it discussed.

Which is why I wanted evidence for "but he does want a state run press/media and anyone who wants to take freedoms away from the public"

Anniebach Fri 27-Sept-24 10:31:47

A quote, Jacob Rees Mogg and the Daily Mail, explains much

Anniebach - I let my membership lapse during the Blair years.

I know he did a lot of good stuff but he seemed like a Tory to me then!

I do hope it is resurrected!

So what do you think Labour peer Alli is getting in return for his generosity, eazybee?

This is what I was wondering.

I think its actually some very basic things - long term friendships, a chance to support a government that Alli believes is heading in the right direction: despite looking widely, politically his interests it comes back to what we've already discussed above.

No, no, no, cataracts need removing, I left the Labour Party when Corbyn was leader
