Anniversary of Israeli massacre

In two days time it will be the anniversary of the Israeli massacre where around 1200 people were murdered and around 300 people were taken hostage.
Today there is a big pro Palestine march him London. Would it have been more respectful and appropriate to have waited till next week or later in the month for this march to take place, especially since the first bombing of Gaza started on 13/10/23 and Israeli troops first entered Gaza on 27/10/23.

I don’t see an end in sight. Israel is sending more troops to Lebanon and I guess an invasion of Lebanon is the next step available to the Israeli government. Israel is not going to back down in any way.

Israeli troops are already inside Lebanon ronib.

I’m not sure what else Israel are supposed to do given that Hezbollah sent thousands of rockets into Israel over the last year, starting on 08/10/23 and continuing ever since.

As the memorial service takes place in Israel, on the site of the festival where young Israelis were hunted down and murdered like animals, Hamas are firing rockets into Israel.

And what exactly is the UN doing

Or, to give them another name, the UDN.
Useless Disunited Nations

There seems to be nothing anyone can do to stop this. Both sides are intent in wiping out the other regardless of any innocent civilians.

These posters are appearing in multiple London Underground stations today 👏👏👏

Although I expect it won’t be long before they are torn down 🙁

I wish for an end to hostilities and that those remaining can have a chance to rebuild their lives.
I also wish that all people could live alongside each other in peace.
We don't seem to have learned how to do this over the last 2000 years.
When will the killing stop. It's heartbreaking.

SkyNews have concentrated their programming on the massacre on 07/10/23 today. It’s been extremely good coverage. Right now they talking about Keir and Ariel Bibas, the two tiny boys taken hostage last year, along with their mother, and their father who is thought to have been subsequently separated from them. The baby was nine months old at the time and the little boy was about four. Hamas say the children and their mother are dead, but no bodies have ever been released, and so the situation is uncertain.
For balance Sky have also reported on some of the victims in Gaza, injured children and also adults. They have filmed in hospitals that have received injured people, children mainly, outside of Gaza, because obviously they cannot go into Gaza.
It had been extremely good coverage. I watched some this morning and having just come in, I’ve watched a bit more. I’m going to turn it off now and get dinner sorted.

The massacre of 7/0/23 was foremost in the minds of many

Why not?
Aren’t people allowed to discuss?
I think it’s an important subject given what’s happening in the Middle East, and the relevance of yesterday as the anniversary of Hamas’s appalling terrorist attack. To say no one can contribute suggests a closing down of free discussion. YouGov published a poll yesterday looking at how attitudes had changed in the year since October 2023. For example it found (at the end of September 24) that one in ten younger people have more sympathy for Hamas than for the Israelis. It also reported on a variety of other changes in sympathies since October 2023.
Why is it not useful and valid for people to discuss this?

This poll did not ask people about support for Hamas but for the Palestinian people, which is a very different question. I think it is also important to appreciate that the responses are a self selecting group, the number of young people (18-24) is small (as you would expect) and the the responses have been weighted. However, I think it's interesting to look at the responses.

My 4 year old grandson has a knack of asking questions about what on the surface is a minor issue. For example, I was wearing earrings and the questions which followed kept me on my toes. If a 4 year old has an agile and inquisitive mind, maybe see should see the benefit in asking questions and searching for answers ??

ronib Tue 08-Oct-24 13:40:18

We should see ..

We can contribute, it’s a forum, whether it’s useful or not is another matter. You could say that about many subjects tho.
Most people will have sympathy for Palestinians, both Jewish,
Muslim and Christian and atheists, but will all those have sympathy for Israel and the horror that happened on October 7 last year, that’s the question. My answer is not all would.
I can well imagine some cheering going on for hamas.Just as there will be some cheerleaders in the UK for Hezbollah.

ronib Tue 08-Oct-24 16:38:29

Oreo I don’t think anyone living in the Uk should be cheering for proscribed political organisations. By all means be free to support Hamas and Hezbollah but preferably not from the UK. Either agree with our common values or leave?

Oreo Tue 08-Oct-24 16:49:33

I agree ronib in fact I think to be out in public cheering them on or shouting or holding a placard supporting them should be a crime and should be prosecuted. That holds for any terrorist group.
If not a British citizen then deported.

ronib Tue 08-Oct-24 16:59:22

Oreo yes I wonder why it isn’t illegal at the moment? Or perhaps it is? Just not being enacted?

eggplant Tue 08-Oct-24 17:42:03

We live ( allegedly) in a democracy. May I politely suggest that things are a tad more complex than terrorists are bad, Israel is good.
Just a thought.

ronib Tue 08-Oct-24 17:43:29

eggplant yes we know that. And?

maddyfour Tue 08-Oct-24 17:46:50

All terrorists are bad in my opinion. Murdering, raping, burning, beheading; I’m sorry I can’t see any value in those actions, whoever are the group behind such things.
