Lidia Thorpe shouted about the odds for Aboriginal peoples, for the moment. Apparently, she has cultivated an attention seeking habit of all things Australian over the years. Silly woman. Me, me, me look at me!

Protests are not in their nature dignified if they are to accomplish a result. She clearly did that and garnered world wide attention in doing so . Mission accomplished !

No, she's also been condemned, by many of her Native Australians.

DD went to see Charles and Camilla when they did a walkabout in Canberra.

She was queuing before they had even left Sydney, an hour’s flight away, and was still not at the front.

She said there were people from all over, different countries, young mums and children, office workers, not just pensioners.

Everyone was thrilled to see them, so don’t think the republican camp is quite as robust as they seem to think.

Allira, are you saying Australian aboriginal people get concessions like hunting animals to death?

Instead of such sops to keep them quiet, indigenous peoples should be enriched as to education, health care, housing, and other civilised freedoms so as to raise them to the same level of affluence as everyone else.

They do get all the health care, education and housing, many millions are spent but the younger generation are gravely affected by drink and drugs.
Ms Thorpe is their representative and has managed to make things worse

Native Title Act 1993

I doubt that the number of crocs they might hunt would make much difference to the survival of the species.

There are crocodile farms, anyway, where they're bred for expensive designer handbags and shoes. So denying native Australians the right to hunt crocodiles for food would seem hypocritical.

(1) Subject to subsection (2) and to the operation of this Act in relation to parks and reserves and conservation zones, nothing in this Act prevents Aborigines from continuing in accordance with law, the traditional use of any area of land or water for hunting for food-gathering (otherwise than for purposes of sale) and for ceremonial and religious purposes.

I think Ms Thorpe was probably being deliberately provocative when she wore a possum skin cloak.
Possums are protected by law for most of the general public.

In the more detailed news coverage on the news channel it did say say Charles has offered to drop the titles of King of of Australia and of New Zealand but they haven’t taken the offer up (Australia voted against it)
I think he would be happy to get rid of the titles- but would not agree to giving the reparation money that aboriginal people say they deserve!!

grandtanteJE65 Tue 22-Oct-24 16:48:32

I too feel that one can hardly understate the wrongs that indigenous people have suffered at the hands of imperialists from all European countries.

As the woman is an elected Australian politician it is both her right and her duty to remind the rest of us of what has gone on, and to a degree still goes on there.

I was always told, that we all have a right to protest or disagree with others, but must do so politely.

You can’t start talking of full reparation, the present population of Australia isnt going to allow that, they can be given a fair share, that has been the aim for many years.

Aboriginals get their pro rata share of welfare payments etc plus 8 billion dollars each year, a total of nearly 40 billion dollars.

Oreo Tue 22-Oct-24 17:00:32

The important thing is to make sure things are fair now toward the indigenous people of Australia, which for all I know it already is.
Shouting at the King on his visit is just rude and I understand that this political outpouring isn’t how everyone feels.

Caleo Tue 22-Oct-24 17:43:34

Pro rata is not enough for a people who remain in need of enriched education, better housing and extra health care so that they can take their places alongside and be as affluent as other people in Australia.

Caleo Tue 22-Oct-24 17:46:29

Oreo clutches her pearls and cries "Oh! How rude. "

Oreo Tue 22-Oct-24 17:51:03

How I wish I possessed some pearls Caleo all I can do is offer you some pearls of wisdom.
Tell you what, you clutch some for me.

Allira Tue 22-Oct-24 17:51:43

Are you Australian, Caleo?

Caleo Tue 22-Oct-24 18:09:35

Allira, with modern communications it's a small world, and I do know that when indigenous peoples dwell in former or actual colonies, they are usually comparatively disadvantaged .

Caleo Tue 22-Oct-24 18:12:11

Oreo I own no pearls, neither have I servants or horses to frighten by any rude behaviours.

Oreo Tue 22-Oct-24 18:12:49

So you don’t really know.hmm

Oreo Tue 22-Oct-24 18:14:02

Good for you Caleo neither have I, tho I’d like some servants.

It is important to ask why many indigenous peoples especially living in mainly indigenous communities have high rates of alcohol and drug use. Googled a lot as well as my own suspicions
- basically the points made settle around the combination of having been stripped of an originally meaningful and purposeful way of life (land, a nomadic rural lifestyle, belief systems) and being treated for 100+ years as second class citizens meant that only some have adapted to a western white lifestyle.

Wyllow3 Tue 22-Oct-24 18:44:46

This is an article on it asking "why" but its a long read

Yes, that is a historic problem and one that is being addressed.

More needs to be done to give children, especially teenagers, a purpose. In rural towns especially, there seems to be a lack of facilities for young people.

Wyllow3 Tue 22-Oct-24 20:00:42

Yes, in those semi desert isolated towns miles apart Allira - not hard to understand. Many on lands now given to huge farms with little employment since mechanisation.

Agree with you mael3

Not a great royal watcher but Im glad that on the whole Charles and Camilla's tour has gone well. I think he had gained a lot of sympathy from having cancer and brownie points being so up front about it, and encouraging men to come forward.

Land, including some farms, is being handed back to the original owners.
