The Trump supporters I have come across tend to be very conservative, Bible believing Christians. He courts them, he knows that is where his vocal support is - in the pulpits down South. I would guess many churches would support him from the pulpit.

Why? I just don't get it.

Traditional Republicans perhaps? You’d have to look at the history of the USA- the same with their love of guns. Seen as the American way of life with a certain ( rather large) demographic. Very different mindset from us and I would think you, too. Not all, of course, but a sizeable group. Europeans are different. Some Australians seem to be a bit this way, too.

I find I’ve warmed to King Charles.
And I hope Trump wins the US presidential election.

Good grief, why??

Cossy Sun 27-Oct-24 09:28:24

I have both friends and relatives spread across the US.

None support Trump or his rhetoric.

His policies seem a little akin to Reform policies. Sound great on paper but totally uncosted.

His stance on immigrants is similar to Reform and his alleged support for Russia/Putin is simply frightening.

His speeches are alarming and his aggressive manner about anything with which he disagrees is shocking.

I truly hope he doesn’t win!

Starmer will be hoping he doesn’t win. Trump won’t forget the sending of Labour staff to promote the democrats.

Re the OP, would that have been at the time of the Flintstones?

Sane? Why, then, would Fred be banging on the door shouting, ‘ COME ON WILMA, OPEN THIS DOOR’ when he was standing right next to an open window?

The Unholy Trinity: Trump, Putin and Netanyahu.

It’s my understanding that it was LP members, not staff and that this has happened in other US elections. Farage supported Trump in person at previous elections.

I could listen to Mr Obama all day long......such a lovely tone to his voice.

The Queen and Mr Trump.........oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! He had no concept of how to behave during that memorable visit when he walked in from of HM - what a buffoon!

halfpint1 Sun 27-Oct-24 10:28:08

It strikes me as a bad sign for religion when they ignore his bad behaviour and poor attitudes.

Sorry i was referring to the bible Belt

As nanna8 upthread said, you have to look at US history to understand Christian Right-Wing politics.

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition...

Trump's 'Christian-Right' frames its argument as a fight against evil - which means its opponents, the Democrats, are the devil incarnate, and therefore the enemy of the US.

They want to bring God into government, which is probably why some supporters genuinely believe that God-chose-Trump.

The issue with a lot of the “Bible Belts” is their extreme views on women and their rights. Any woman voting for Trump is very odd indeed!

Wyllow3 Sun 27-Oct-24 13:30:50

We might think so, but he has women supporters outside the bible belt. whats the attraction? is it the "strong male I will protect you" thing? In interviews I've seen, it's not just that, it's also those who believe his economic policies will favour them.

How far the people have considered the effect of the far right Section 25 changes to democracy, I don't really know. Trump's speeches don't include ending an independent judiciary and other democratic structures.

Wyllow3 Sun 27-Oct-24 13:31:52

(but those are Project 25 proposals, as well as ending abortion rights)

Well there wasn’t any wars going on under Trump

And now apparently Islamic mullahs, as well as the happy clappys.

Both believe in controlling sexuality and in particular woman’s bodies.

Both very conservative

Trumps "death or victory" MAGA supporters think they are at war - he is leading the country into possible civil unrest in a gun ridden society - how can you say "no wars going on".

As for "Abroad" - do you believe that the US should not have supported Ukraine then? You can hardly say that Biden caused the invasion of Ukraine?

The country was involved in Afghanistan during Trump's presidency.

You are confusing fact with fiction.

The fact is, President Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump, were both eager to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan and end what Biden referred to in his Aug. 16 speech as “America’s longest war.”

The Trump administration in February 2020 negotiated a withdrawal agreement with the Taliban that excluded the Afghan government, freed 5,000 imprisoned Taliban soldiers and set a date certain of May 1, 2021, for the final withdrawal.

And the Trump administration kept to the pact, reducing U.S. troop levels from about 13,000 to 2,500, even though the Taliban continued to attack Afghan government forces and welcomed al-Qaeda terrorists into the Taliban leadership.

Biden delayed the May 1 withdrawal date that he inherited. But ultimately his administration pushed ahead with a plan to withdraw by Aug. 31.

So Trump’s intention had been for withdrawal before it actually took place. I can if you desire give you a full rundown of what took place, from February 2020 to August 2021.
