Wyllow- just like us in the uk with a knife ridden society. Sick to death of seeing yet another death caused by knifing- thank the lord we don’t have gun law in the uk

Yet the myths persist, Whitewave; I have heard this from other sources too.

Grantanow Sun 27-Oct-24 16:14:11

Ha ha. Well spotted Dadima! Of course 'sane' does not mean Fred wasn't stupid or vice versa.

The Trump supporters I have come across tend to be very conservative, Bible believing Christians. He courts them, he knows that is where his vocal support is - in the pulpits down South. I would guess many churches would support him from the pulpit.

The issue with a lot of the “Bible Belts” is their extreme views on women and their rights. Any woman voting for Trump is very odd indeed!

Any woman voting for Trump is very odd indeed!

Different mindset.

If you've been raised to honour country, God, family - respecting menfolk as providers and protectors, women's rights will seem unnecessary and alien.

Many years ago, I used to chat on a forum populated mostly by Americans (it was a health forum, but there was also a section for off-topic chat). As a European, I was frequently taken to task for my political outlook, and the question of women's rights was just as frequently dismissed - by both sexes - as 'liberal nonsense'. I once suggested that commercial pornography relied heavily on the exploitation of women and that it encouraged men to see them as sexual objects - that caused quite a backlash against me, and my 'European' way of thinking! The consensus was that pornography was a legitimate business, and that as long as women were not trafficked, there was absolutely nothing wrong with it because everyone understood that men had needs and it probably stopped them from having to use prostitutes hmm. Some of the women genuinely believed that if you found a "good man" who worked hard to provide for his family, that alone was sufficient for a woman to be "happy" in the home.

Trump is accepted without question about his, erm, errant ways with women because in spite of this being his 3rd marriage, he presents as the family man who loves his offspring - he waxed lyrical after the death of his first wife, Ivana, about her qualities... she helped him run the family casinos. "She was a wonderful, beautiful, and amazing woman, who led a great and inspirational life" he wrote.

How could you not forgive him grin!

His 'observations' about women - the derogatory things he's said, are all dismissed as locker-room talk - men just being men.

I'd chatted to these women for months about health problems on the forum and they were lovely and supportive and helpful - they simply think quite differently to many of us because theirs is another culture.

I don't think they are odd - American culture can be, in many ways, incompatible with ours. But I think you need to understand their history.

Women and men have been socialized by family members, educators, and the media to associate leadership with a particular version of masculinity, an image Trump exemplified in his persona as the supremely successful businessman. He reinforced the masculine, leader-as-savior image with repeated claims that he alone could make America great again.

What do people like about Trump? Please anybody?

It's probably very superficial but I like the Obamas. I like their humour, their humanity, their intelligence, their love for their family.

As I say, no great incites into politics. Maybe I'm wrong.

The Queen, it was sad to see her battling on.It reminded me of my mother.

incites confusedconfused ?
Strikes me Trump did far too much inciting in January 2021

I think pulling someone up for their spelling is rather unkind. In this instance, it was quite obvious what jasper16 meant, and it had nothing to do with inciting.

Cynical for sure, all they had to do was stay neutral, it was not to be, now it’s going to be a long haul to end, I was surprised by the attendance at the BRICS meeting, Russia is far from isolated.

I agree with you, David49. Apparently Russia was promised that NATO would not expand to the east and then it did so.

Ah well, once a teacher and all that. I've learnt to spell reasonably well but the odd one still gets through ( threw?)

I think the country was most at ease with itself from the mid nineties to the early noughties( the period between the early nineties recession and the war in Iraq). Opinions seemed far less polarised, there was Cool Britannia, people seemed more optimistic, and living standards were rising. Also you had all these new, exciting things like the internet, mobile phones and DVDs.

dickens and yet at least 50% of women in the USA disagree with Trump’s policies.

Harris is leading amongst women.

America had the biggest feminist movement in the world when I was growing up.

Their culture is different to European culture, but not that different.

Very interesting post Dickens thank you. It explains much as to why Trump is popular with some women. That said he’s polling strongly. Men like him too it seems. I think he’ll win.

It’s so interesting how we read the same thing and came out with two totally different thoughts

I cannot for the life of me understand why women like him.

I totally understand why some men do.

But it isn’t true. The majority of women do not support Trump.

And with very good reason.

- hopefully more by November.

I was just responding re the mindset or whatever it is that makes those women who do support him - able to ignore his (IMO) blatant sexism.

I don't think so.

What is there to like?

I can't find anything likeable about him. However, he has a large following of fiercely loyal supporters who back him whatever he does. It's a shame Biden left it as late as he did to step down. Had he given the Democrats more time they may have been able to put forward a stronger candidate than Harris. It still baffles me that in a country the size of the USA, neither Party can come up with younger and far more acceptable candidates.

Whatever we think about men liking DT or women liking him, it’s a fact that so many will vote for him that the US election will be very close.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 28-Oct-24 12:45:33

I’ve just been listening to a podcast about the USA election. The opinion there was that if Trump does loose. (50-50 at the moment), they think that he is unlikely to call for any form of insurrection because he is being sentenced at the end of November, and he won’t risk a stiffer sentence.

Hmm.

Mojack26 Mon 28-Oct-24 12:57:41

Ditto! My daughter and I were just saying that about the late queen. Not the same without her. Yes same with the Obamas...Intelligent, Classy and Caring.. unlike Trump!

Foxyferret Mon 28-Oct-24 13:18:29

It’s a shame that the U.S have only these two to choose from. I think they think that Trump is the lesser evil than the cackling, grinning Harris. She appears to be high or drunk in a lot of her interviews.

vegansrock Mon 28-Oct-24 13:48:31

Trump appeals more to men with a low level of education - that’s the demographic he wants to get out to vote.

Kayteetay1 Mon 28-Oct-24 14:06:42

Why on earth would you want Trump to become president?

Back when things were sane? When was that then?

Sometime before Munich!
