Will Messrs Reeves and Raynor Still Be Around This Time Next Year?

Sir Keir's ratings have nosedived so badly since the election that I wonder which moves he might be planning for his first Cabinet re-shuffle.
He strikes me as having an underlying ruthless streak and won't hesitate to jettison certain unpopular "comrades" in order to shore up his own position.
Whenever I see a media photo of Keir, Angela and Rachel grinning idiotically at each other I just have to think "I bet two of you will have got your P45's by next year......"

Can I ask what is going on here? Why has Keir Starmer become such a target for negativity and invective? It seems to have shades of a witch hunt. The duplicity and deception of the previous incredibly destructive Tory rule seems to have been forgotten. The man is only a few months into office - why has everyone taken against him when he won a landslide? For goodness sake give him a chance. Not all of his decisions are going to be popular but he’s hopefully heading in a direction which will ultimately help the UK get back on their feet. All this is sadly reminiscent of what happened to Barrack Obama and Jacinda Adhern - the right wing press really gunning for them and blocking a lot of really positive legislative change - the population then joining in a chorus of dragging them down. All are good people with strong core values and moral clarity who are/have been constantly hounded. I find it really scary that the spectre of Trump is hovering over the world at the moment - that really would be a signal for global devastation … maybe be careful what you complain about?

I agree entirely, Sarah.

Me too.

I shall be glad when we have an opposition so we can actually discuss politics and policy alternatives. A lot of this thread belongs under "chat'.

I agree with Sarah

I agree with your comment, Wyllow, we seem to be confusing which genre certain discussions should be put under on GN.
Maybe it is because the wording coming out from out from Keir Starmer is somewhat confusing too.
Hopefully tomorrow will bring clarification and this confounding befuddlement will disappear.

Hopefully NOT!

The main befuddlement on any political threads, here on GN and on other SM sites is the assumption that anyone who expresses disappointment or disapproval or criticism of KS and the labour party automatically approved of everything the last government did.

The fact that labour got in and didn’t live up to the hopes and expectations of people who decided not to vote Conservative would seem a more likely reason for the criticism.

Saying wait for the budget makes sense,

but KS immediately doing something the last government was condemned by him for proposing to do,

the carefully leaked proposals, e.g. free breakfasts for all primary children together with ^no WFA for those who don’t need it, are stirring up unnecessary dissension.

I suppose that’s the same as the blanket assumption I mentioned earlier.

On a slightly different tack, the Budget is tomorrow and Rachel Reeves is apparently looking forward to delivering it, having put in an immense amount of preparation.

It is a pity therefore that KS and Wes Streeting are attempting to steal her thunder with various pronouncements about what it will contain; I have never seen Lindsay Hoyle so angry about the various leaks shared outside Parliament.

Now this is a huge improvement.
Hair shorter and behind the ears, lovely colour suit, matching lipstick and a silky ivory, oyster blouse. Near perfection Madame Reeves! πŸ‘ πŸ‘

dear me, this is what is on people's minds?

It is a standard strategy for specially constructed leaks before the budget.
Those prepared by the government in power are excused, those that can be blamed on other parties are condemned as dreadful behaviour by the party in power, as if they’d never do such a thing.

Yes of course- it’s bound to be commented on - I’m sure we all loved J Hunt’s suits and ties.

Well, people are telling us to put budget speculation to the back of our minds, so I'm off on a different course until then!

The trouble is, leaks or not, it's now too late for anyone to do anything about it. That's why I understand the frustration and anger amongst pensioners about the WRP etc. It all sprang out of nowhere.

There was a very wise GN member, who on here 4 or 5 months ago, said there were ways of preparing for such eventualities, and that it was possible to mitigate some of the upcoming measures. Admittedly mainly to do with those of us with investments, and drawing down private pensions etc. Some sneered at her, some, including me, listened. I've done what I can, the rest I can't change. I'll live with the 20% VAT on school fees.
I'm genuinely sorry there will be others here less fortunate, and I get their rants.

Not everyone has a works pension so it's sensible to try to put some aside if possible to avoid an impoverished (and very chilly) old age.

Keir Starmer has just received the worst approval rating of any Prime Minister, ever. It has gone down 43 points to -38.
It may rise tomorrow, but it does not give you confidence.

He’ll care nought for that.
