Conservative Party Leader announcement...

(352 Posts)
Wyllow3 Fri 01-Nov-24 14:14:17

The result will be announced at 11am tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

The "turnout" was not high. (Telegraph).

Kemi Badenoch was the favourite last week

"A survey of Tory members by the ConservativeHome website last week suggested, external Badenoch led Jenrick by 55% to 31%, with a further 14% undecided."

As regards discussion had to find an accessible website

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2dqzqx2y1o

Will there be a surprise?

Valid to whom? And who decides?

The issue is that if something is illegal in the UK, it applies to everybody. The idea of 'validity' is irrelevant.

As I wrote before, I am vehemently against the abortion ban being enforced in some US states. I disagree 100% with fundamentalist Christians on that issue. Where should Christians or Americans be ranked on the hypothetical validity scale? Should they all be condemned because I (and many others) support a woman's right to choose?

Hahaha! Integrity is something I know for an absolute fact she doesn't have. She sways with the wind, if she thinks it will make her popular.

Then she must be a good politician because that’s what they all do, at some time or another.

How do you know that for an absolute fact? Do you know her personally?

I doubt it. It’s evidently enough for her just to be a Conservative.

I once shared a picnic with her. Apart from that, I've been in the same room a few times and listened to her changing opinions.

Not at all. I had a huge amount of respect for our former Conservative MP, who helped me out personally on two occasions.

Believe it or not, some people are able to differentiate between Conservative MPs (and other parties for that matter) and don't rely on lazy stereotypes.

But it looked as if that was what you were doing.

MaizieD when the extremes of any culture are perpetuated here in the U.K. surely they shouldn’t be tolerated?

Two posters have already addressed that.

For all the good it does (sigh).

Apologies if I have missed that part of the thread, I often just skim through, so it’s not unusual for me to miss something.

At least I know you read my posts (some of them, anyway) grin

MaizieD 👍I have learnt a lot from your posts and links over the years, thank you.

KS also has changing opinions about so many things, tuition fees being the latest in a long line.

FGM is illegal in England. It’s difficult to work with communities here who follow this abhorrent practice. Attempts to work alongside to persuade against are often met with huge resistance because of deeply held religious or cultural belief systems. Girls can be spirited out of the country, believing they’re being treated to a party to celebrate them growing up. It often happens during the long school summer holiday.
I agree with GG13 that male circumcision is just wrong. As with FGM it’s carried out on children who can’t give informed consent. It’s down to cultural/religious belief systems so. Rey difficult to change. Fortunately, circumcision doesn’t have hideous life changing effects, designed to put that small girl in real difficulties with menstruation or childbirth, we won’t even think about painful, pleasure free sex.

Galaxy Tue 05-Nov-24 19:29:27

Thanks Iam64, I find some of the resistance to the discussion of culture etc, a little bit like the resistance to discuss male violence
Not all men and so on.

Galaxy Tue 05-Nov-24 19:30:48

I agree about circumcision too.

MissAdventure Tue 05-Nov-24 20:04:10

There is a huge difference between male and female circumcision.

It's a misnomer to call what is done to girls circumcision.

MissAdventure Tue 05-Nov-24 20:16:36

no flip flopping in university fees. Rather than copy a whole post, if you go to the separate thread on University fees there’s a lot of info but on page 2 at 12.04 there is proof and references.

Yes I agree entirely missadventure, I am still against circumcision for children..

MissAdventure Tue 05-Nov-24 20:47:55

Me too, for sure.

I watched a documentary about it years ago, where a woman who had been circumcised set up screening in a London Park, then invited people in to watch films taken of the actual process.

The most telling part was a group of young men, giggling and explaining how it was necessary to stop teen girls from going off the rails, and being obsessed with sex.

All very sure of themselves
Until they came out after watching the videos.

A couple were physically sick, all were ashen faced, most crying,, and all had decided that wasn't what they wanted for their future wives.

They understood how much damage had been done - not just physically, and didn't want to have sex with someone who would forever just endure it.

The point is that he is going against what he protested about, same as the winter fuel allowance.

Yes but we’re not supposed to remember that.

But the name of the game seems to be to derail threads. Maybe the theory is if you shout loud enough, people will just give up and go away (I know that's how I feel). It appears that Trumpianism rules! RIP rationalism, balance and intelligent discussion!
