The result will be announced at 11am tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

The "turnout" was not high. (Telegraph).

Kemi Badenoch was the favourite last week

"A survey of Tory members by the ConservativeHome website last week suggested, external Badenoch led Jenrick by 55% to 31%, with a further 14% undecided."

As regards discussion had to find an accessible website

Will there be a surprise?

“She said it’s “time to tell the truth” - meaning they were lying before?”

Yes vegansrock I thought that was a very interesting comment! I wonder if Beth Rigby et al, in the right wing media, will probe her on thathmm Let’s see!

Congratulations Kemi you are someone who is prepared to stand up for Women’s Rights. 👍

Until you get pregnant at work?

She may be a breath of fresh air for the Conservative Party as she’s so different from anyone before her.
And hats off to the MP’s and members who selected a black African woman to the top post. They’ve already had an Asian heritage man as PM and a woman in the past.
Labour need to play catch up in this regard as we’ve never had a female or a black person/Asian person or a woman as our leader or PM.

Like quotas you mean?

How silly.

Wyllow3 Sat 02-Nov-24 15:34:52

Not quotas, but reasonable representation.

There will be troubled areas politically concerning multiculturalism when certain issues arise.

Galaxy Sat 02-Nov-24 15:39:42

But the Tories have better representation at the top (not in terms of number of mps I think) precisely because they dont care. So if you are a Tory then that is the bit that counts, your sex and race dont matter, because you are a Tory and 'one of them'. I actually think the labour party could learn from it, it might also be hang ups from labours past, I am afraid that branch meetings I have been to can be a bit sexist at times.

madalene Sat 02-Nov-24 15:53:00

Margaret Thatcher broke through the glass ceiling with regards to women at the top of the Conservative Party. Whatever one thinks of her policies, she broke the mould. The Conservatives have subsequently had both women and ethnic minorities in top roles ever since.

The Labour Party cannot break away from its sexist branch meeting type thinking. It’s improving, that’s for sure, Blair started it and got far more women into Parliament with his all women short lists. He knew the Party had to change. Now the Cabinet has more women in it, and some top jobs too, but it’ll be a long time before an ethnic minority woman, is elected leader in my opinion.

Wyllow3 Sat 02-Nov-24 15:58:29

Not in my branch or CLP meetings, at all. Woman MP of long local standing from our area all her life and a CLP to go with.

Galaxy Sat 02-Nov-24 16:09:10

I was about to say yes in my branch but not in my clp but then remembered how a group of men treated the female chair, now they may have behaved like that to a Male chair, but I am doubtful.

Pantglas2 Sat 02-Nov-24 16:21:30

I’ve always wondered why Labour haven’t had a female leader as back in the day I admired Barbara Castle and always thought she’d have been chosen in the 70s.

Margaret Thatcher wasn’t even on the radar when I first voted in 1974 and to think that the Tories have voted another 3 in, as well as not choosing male and pale as their go to candidate is astonishing!

Any ideas on why that is? I’d have bet on Labour being first in these matters (you can see why I don’t gamble much…🫨)

Casdon Sat 02-Nov-24 16:24:36

We must be very liberated in Wales Pantglas2 given our last two Labour leaders here.

LizzieDrip Sat 02-Nov-24 16:28:29

First female Chancellor of the Exchequer for Labour👏👏👏 (not that it gets much recognition or plaudits on GN).

Pantglas2 Sat 02-Nov-24 16:35:28

Very true Casdon, Lizziedrip! However it doesn’t explain how the Tories were doing it almost half a century ago!

vegansrock Sat 02-Nov-24 16:39:36

The Tories have had a much quicker turnover of leaders though- how many leaders have they had in recent years?

My Late father always said the Tories have never had a problem removing leaders.

Casdon Sat 02-Nov-24 17:02:21

Margaret Beckett acted as the Labour leader when John Smith died suddenly, but lost out to Tony Blair. Harriet Harman also acted as leader in opposition twice, when Gordon Brown resigned, and when Ed Miliband resigned. I don’t think she stood to be elected permanently, but I could be wrong.

I also would have liked to see Barbara Castle have a chance of becoming leader, she was a big fav of mine, Angela Rayner puts me in mind of her, tbh after a few years as deputy I could see Angela as leader, why not?
Not sure what is holding Labour back, it’s not as if any male leader has done a particularly good job.
Strange 🤔

Pantglas2 Sat 02-Nov-24 17:06:52

Yes Visgirl they’ve been pretty ruthless over the year but I’m still surprised that they’ve been more radical than Labour. Nancy Astor was the first woman to sit in the Commons as well - a Tory no less!

She recently said that the purpose of government is to serve business.

It chilled me to the bone. Others may feel differently...

Oh.

And I wonder who she calls business.

The small trader? Or the multi nationals?

So many words nowadays seem to mean different things to different people.
It is hard to keep up.

Labour MP shares post saying Kemi Badenoch is ‘blackface of white supremacy’

The early pioneer MPs from different backgrounds all seem to be larger than life characters. I just looked up to find who the first non white MP was, and it turned up this gentleman. I must say, his autobiography would be a cracking read by the sounds of it!

businesses are the drivers of growth and the economy, if businesses thrive then people thrive and so will the nhs and social care etc. Absolutely businesses form the hub of the wheel and are so very needed for the uk to flourish.

She got right to the heart of the uk financial problem

Did Dawn Butler post that?

Badenoch as the new leader will add maybe 2-3% if they're lucky. The brand is in the dirt after 14 years of one nation wetness and betrayal.

All the political momentum is with ReformUK.

Obviously the big issue with Reform is lack of organisation. The idea they can come anywhere near power right now is a joke because they don’t even have branches and candidates in most areas. That could and should have changed in four years’ time though. The Tory brand is dead as a Dodo so I hope Yusuf and Farage get it together. 😁

The next election will be between Labour and Reform!
