The Guardian offers counselling to staff after ‘upsetting’ Trump election result!

The Guardian is offering counselling to staff as it vowed to support its workforce after Donald Trump’s “upsetting” US election victory this week.

In an email to staff, The Guardian’s editor Katharine Viner said the election had “exposed alarming fault lines on many fronts” and urged journalists based in the UK to contact colleagues in the US “to offer your support”.

I’m glad I don’t give The Guardian any of my money if they waste it to coddle employees in this way!

In what way is the Guardian saying it’s journalists arec’all little didums’.
Many good employers have a staff care policy that provides up to 5 sessions with a qualified therapist after difficult experiences. I see that as a positive thing.

Someone up thread suggested the DM journalists would be most at risk. Nope they wouldn’t because the DM supported the Trump campaign throughout this election and follows the same right leaning agenda as Trump, Farage and Badenoch

The Trump approach of simply sneering and being rude to those who don’t share your belief system seems to be spreading on this forum. Little debate, much sneering and faux outrage

I’ve worked in both the private and public sector.

In both areas we had staff care policies and advice on how to react/proceed in certain circumstances.

Thanks for contributing such a helpful response. Democracy will not survive without a free media. More than ever we need to support good journalism and the brave people who root out the truth.

Just to remind posters that the email alluded to in the O/P did not

offer "counselling or therapy". that was the spin that some MSM put on the on the actual words (this quote was actually from the email - as reported in GB news)

if you want to talk about it, your manager and members of the leadership team are all available,' staff are told

This seems reasonable to me. A lot of people are very distressed by the result, I am, because I've followed Trump for years, feel the hatred and violence and threats that have come out from him and some of his followers, and I've appreciated being able to "talk about it".

Thank you for putting the record straight. Funny that now we know the reality rather than the DM style spin- the thread has suddenly 'run its course'.

Very similar approach to that of the guardian taken in my family and friendship group. What a s**t show said the youth wing - how crazy those Americans are

Just picked up this thread. What a generation of namby-pamby's we're producing and pandering to. Are they being counselled about Putin, Jong-Un and their ilk?

The fact that you haven't read the thread is obvious.

What, all 73 million of them crazy? Hardly.
Did the youth wing need any counselling? I’m betting not.

WellsRose Fri 08-Nov-24 18:09:14

Oh my goodness Oreo. Why are you going on about counselling as it's already been discussed that it wasn't counselling they were being offered?

Casdon Fri 08-Nov-24 18:11:17

Well, some of the are planning to ship out. I’ve seen two stories in the news today, that interest in Canadian imigarstion has spiked, and that some celebrities are planning to move to the UK.
Perhaps it’s just me, but if I were a US citizen I’d be actively seeking counselling, having looked at what Trump has said he is going to do.

Sorry, them not the, in response to Oreo.

Galaxy Fri 08-Nov-24 18:15:56

I hope if they come to the UK those celebrities dont ever contribute to a labour campaign, they werent at all helpful. I enjoyed Ricky Gervais taking the p out of them.

"The Guardian is offering counselling to staff as it vowed to support its workforce after Donald Trump’s “upsetting” US election victory this week"

...which is why I don't read this snowflakes' organ

Casdon Fri 08-Nov-24 18:24:22

As long as they pay tax Galaxy. The majority of celebs were backing Harris, but who knows who they would support here, not Reform for sure, possibly the Lib Dem’s.
I thought Ricky Gervais’ post was inarticulate though, not impressed.

It is a 13 page thread and there have been 3 deletions.
I know they can stop anything they like but they tend to be fairly good with free speech.

Now 5..

When celebrities[and I would not count 7] up sticks and leave, I shall believe it.

Hardly happened in the past, no matter how many people said they would go.

Not so sure about Harry and Meghan though..

Galaxy Fri 08-Nov-24 18:26:13

Oh it is fine if they support the lib dems, Labour would definitely will again then.

This was what I saw on celebs, we’ll see.

Clebs are always making announcements... Lilly Allen used to really get on my wick for that.

A few points.

I didnt know what Trump said recently about journalists.
A shocking thing to say.
There are many people who are not in their right mind.
It is not beyond possibility what someone might do.

This thread will only end when people stop posting[or GN decide to shut it down].

a shocking thing to say
Do you mean that you didn’t know what Trump said Re journalists? If so, why is it shocking
I would image there are millions of people not only in this country but also the US.

But they are not being offered counselling! Read the whole thread here and it’s really really not helpful to refer to anyone as a snowflake)

Shouldn't we now be horrified that they're not being offered counselling, though?

I'm never sure how these things work nowadays.

Thank you for that article Casdon - appalling.

This thread has gone on for so long that I’m losing the will to live!

I have read it all though.

I hope we don’t get Harry and Megan back.

No doubt there’d be a thread about that and everyone could get cross with each other again.
