The Guardian offers counselling to staff after ‘upsetting’ Trump election result!

The Guardian is offering counselling to staff as it vowed to support its workforce after Donald Trump’s “upsetting” US election victory this week.

In an email to staff, The Guardian’s editor Katharine Viner said the election had “exposed alarming fault lines on many fronts” and urged journalists based in the UK to contact colleagues in the US “to offer your support”.

I’m glad I don’t give The Guardian any of my money if they waste it to coddle employees in this way!

This thread has gone on for so long that I’m losing the will to live!

I have read it all though.

I hope we don’t get Harry and Megan back.

No doubt there’d be a thread about that and everyone could get cross with each other again.

smile

News us they are off to Portugal

Am off to do something more productive now, a work shift!
Have to see how many pages this goes on for sometime tomorrow.

Apparently Trump liked HM Queen Elizabeth and didn't like the way Harry was disrespectful towards her.

Have I found one thing I like about Trump? Crikey!
I'm not sure how the Queen felt about him.

Casdon Fri 08-Nov-24 20:31:39

The Queen thought he was a rude man by all accounts.

Fleurpepper Fri 08-Nov-24 21:01:23

remember the way he pushed past her- she was not happy!

Yes, I do.

He thought he was far more important.

Yes, I do.

He thought he was far more important.

He showed what an ignorant narcissistic misogynist he is when he couldn’t show respect to a very elderly head of state. He was a guest who had no basic manners

Allira Fri 08-Nov-24 21:41:59

I do, however, remember when Michelle Obama put her arm round the Queen (unheard of!) and the Queen reciprocated. The Queen obviously realised that, although it was against protocol, she did not mind and wanted to avoid adverse publicity.

madalene Fri 08-Nov-24 21:50:16

I remember when Meghan got in the official car before the Queen. That’s against protocol too. I suspect the Queen just thought they didn’t know the protocol and she let it go.

Maybe they care about their staff - you do realise what’s happened don’t you ? A convicted criminal has been elected as the head of the most powerful country in the world. Thousands of years of evolution and the American people chose a buffoon . Their are men in Texas at the university walking around with placards saying ‘women are property ‘ seriously sister the world needs counselling..

There's more to this than just upsetting journalists.

Trump has called journalists 'enemies of the people' and has dismissed legitimate journalism as 'fake news'. He has threatened to seize emails and phone records. He has said "We’re going to come after people in the media”.

Who knows what that kind of inflammatory language might lead to? We all know there are some loonies around who will follow through. There is anecdotal evidence that some journalists in the US have already been physically assaulted.

All of this. All Of the US should be offered counseling , we’ve dear friends there and she was quite distraught over the result and understandably so. The man is a criminal, who says the most inflammatory things and has already urged his followers to a violent attack four years ago. His rhetoric and speech is shameful and it’s unimaginable that the people of the US have elected him again. A felon can you imagine

Maremia Sat 09-Nov-24 09:25:56

Much as I love to win an argument, this time I hope the Trump supporters will prove to be correct in their assumtion that he will be a good, honest, fair, decent and just President. We will find out soon.

War correspondents and counselling, possibly.
Guardian journalists. No.

They have the platform to express their opinions logically, clearly, without bias and backed with credible evidence.
They might improve their sales if they faced up to reality.

This story, and some of the replies in support of this daftness would make a good April Fool’s spoof in newspapers!

I wonder if Richard Littlejohn has picked up on it? It’s the sort of story he loves and it could certainly be filed under his
“you couldn’t make it up” section!

Well, not sure those adjectives apply to DT but as long as he takes some advice from experts on foreign policy, improves the US economy and restrains himself just a bit, that will do.

‘Sending flowers to all those who are upset by reading some comments on this thread’ was my favourite.
Never come across that one before.

Perhaps the Trump victory was the straw that broke the camel's back.

That's why sensitive and empathic people felt they needed to talk to a professional.

The world is quite terrifying for many at the moment.

NotSpaghetti Sat 09-Nov-24 10:36:45

I don't know how we have so many responses to this without the full email text being posted anywhere (I have searched the responses and can't find it).

It was just an email after all - and a reminder of the existing support available to staff. I think this is yet another case where there's nothing to see. Just an employer commiserating with staff and reminding people they aren't alone.

Here is the email in case anyone is interested:

What a dramatic night. As we report on the outcome of the US election, it is clear that the journalism we do has a crucial role to play in this moment. It has never been more challenging, or more vital. It is also a big responsibility.

The election has exposed alarming fault lines on many fronts, which we will be examining in the weeks and months ahead. We will look at how the result affects people’s lives in the US; how it affects global stability and security; what it means for the climate. (Bill McKibben wrote for us that a Trump win could reverberate for a million years.)

Our readers across the world will come to us to understand how this happened, what it means, and what to do. They will come to us for clarity, and imagination, and even for hope.

Our ownership, our mission and our team of journalists mean we are very well-placed to deliver for them.

I know the result has been very upsetting for many colleagues. Our US teams in particular have covered the election with brilliant reporting; they have done it with great commitment and focus, serving readers in America and across the world.

They will be most directly affected by the result. If you’re not in the US, do contact your American colleagues to offer your support.

It’s upsetting for many others, too. If you want to talk about it, your manager and members of the leadership team are all available, as the People team. There is also free access to free support services, which I’ve outlined at the end of this email.

Take care,

Kath

Oreo et al, remember Charlie Hebdo?

In January 2015, an attack on the Paris office of the satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, claimed the lives of 17 people, including 11 journalists and security personnel

Not war correspondents - just ordinary journalists, doing their job!

NotSpaghetti Sat 09-Nov-24 10:55:12

Yes, we all remember that LizzieDrip
- and belatedly I want to give a "shout out" to schools, universities, workplaces etc who have used this as an opportunity to remind people of the facilities they already offer. The university ridiculed early on for having a "self care" space was referring to a common room apparently where there are drinks, cookies, lego and other games pens/paper etc where "people can come together ". It's reminding students about facilities- that's all.

I don't think this is truly radical "tofu woke" thinking. We had a student common room with drinks and board games when I was a student. It was under used on the whole but was nice to drift in if you wete at a loose end between lectures etc.

NotSpaghetti Sat 09-Nov-24 11:05:16

As an afterthought- as Casdon said ages ago - why is it even interesting how The Guardian handles staff issues?

As I said... nothing to see here.

Not sure about ordinary journalists tbh as CH was a satirical magazine not a weekly or daily newspaper.
A terrible thing tho, gunned down by Muslim extremists.
What point are you making LizzieDrip do you think DT will send in assassins to the offices of magazines?

Jaberwok Sat 09-Nov-24 11:12:11

The only time I remember the Queen even vaguely expressing disapproval was at the turn of the millennium when Tony Blair linked arms with H.M for Auld Lang Syne! Eeek! I don't think President Trump fased her at all. Remember Camilla winking??!! At least P.T. likes the RF, unlike P.B who made no secret of how much he disliked them, owing to his ? times great grandparents being Irish! I ask you, how ridiculous is that? I have Irish G.grandparents (County Cork) and I can't say that I particularly give them a seconds thought!

It wasn’t called a ‘safe space’ tho 😂
Lego? Colouring books? Milk and cookies? What nonsense.
