The Farmers Fight

Infuriated farmers will be protesting against Labour's 'Tractor Tax' opposite Downing Street tomorrow. They are being asked not to bring farm machinery but I hope they clutter up Whitehall with every tractor and combine harvester they can lay their hands on. Reeves claims 'only' 20% of farms will be affected by her latest smash and grab raid but economists say it is nearer 70%. Has it not figured in her brain that if farmers, who already struggle to make ends meet, chuck in the towel, there will be a serious food shortage?

madalene Tue 19-Nov-24 14:03:11

NotSpaghetti
I agree with you 100% about the ‘blanding’ of foods. I blame the supermarkets primarily in the ruthless pursuit of profit, but I also think that poorer people buy these bland foodstuffs because it’s more affordable for them. If we lose our farms to conglomerates, then we can expect more bland food to be on sale, as these conglomerates will not be interested in quality, only quantity.

Do we Gransnetters realise how privileged many of us are? We can afford to buy quality, more expensive food. However even some of our Gransnetters cannot afford the pricier, quality foodstuffs. Some of us are on Pension Credit, luckily for me, I’m not, but I’m concerned for those that are.

Sorry that should have said "I totally suppport the Farmers."

Is the current government capable of changing its mind? Or even entering a discussion?
I'm reading how little consultation and discussion there was with farmers over this. Just a rush to get it out, showing once again a lack of compassion.
And where actually is Keir Starmer in all this? I can't believe I'm the only one to notice he is conspicuous by his absence. I think he is conveniently abroad, which he has been doing rather a lot recently.

Jane112 Tue 19-Nov-24 14:07:22

This is a protest confected by the likes of Clarkson and Farage, the vast majority of farmers will pay nothing or very little, compared to the vast assets they are inheriting, spread over 10 years, that is fact. Increasing IHT for farmers will stop people like Clarkson buying large farms to openly boast about doing so to avoid tax, people like him are artificially inflating the cost of farmland and 40%of working farmland is now being sold to non farming investors as a tax dodge.

That is incorrect. He didn't actually know about inheritance tax stuff until after he bought it.

How very convenient for him.

Badenoch and Farage joined the protest, how sweet

The Conservatives were quite happy to make the Trade Agreement with Australia in 2021 that undermined the ability of smaller farmers to compete price wise.

Today Badenoch said, "“We know the burden that farmers are carrying” - “want you to know that we have your backs,” she continues."

But the reality is that small farms have been struggling for some time because of market forces.

I do think the level of IT could be reviewed - but the wealthier landowners are using this opportunity to try and maintain the status quo of not paying IT at all.

Badenoch pledged to reverse the IT for all including those who can and should pay.

How ridiculously funny!

The director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), an independent economy think-tank, told Sky News: "The changes will affect a remarkably small number of some of the most valuable farms."

He added: "[Farms are] still more generously treated, actually, than farms used to be in decades past."

The Treasury estimates that 500 estates including agricultural land will be affected by the agricultural property relief reform, external per year.

Dan Neidle, an independent tax expert, says the number of actual farms, external affected is likely to be below 500 per year.

There were a total of 462 inherited farms valued above £1m in 2021-22, according to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)

345 valued between £1m and £2.5m
80 at £2.5m to £5m
37 above £5m

Under the new rules, those 462 farms would be affected by the 20% inheritance tax on any value above £1m (not on the whole value).

Correct.

I saw him interviewed today. He said he actually bought the farm because he wanted it for shooting, but as shooting for sport is considered to be not very politically correct, he said he was buying the land for farming. It was only afterwards he found out about the IHT.
It’s good that the farmers have a voice to speak for them.

Farage may be supporting the farmers (I’ve no idea because I’ve seen nothing about him) but just as we Gransnetters can support/not support the farmers, so can Farage. The difference is, nobody cares what any of us think.

Fleurpepper Tue 19-Nov-24 14:24:16

Having said that, I totally support 'normal' farmers. They were sold a total pup with Brexit, which has turned out to be an absolute disaster. Cheap imports coming in with hardly any checks, and huge amounts of very expensive red tape and vet and other checks to be able to export- combined with much higher costs to import feeds and fertilisers- due to tarifs, checks and also low Sterling values and loss in EU subsidies, etc.

madalene Tue 19-Nov-24 14:24:56

If Jeremy Clarkson is a liar, unfortunately so is Rachel Reeves.

What is wrong with a PM travelling for trade and international security and climate negotiations? Some of those visits were for very short periods. They total 26 working days.

I’ve seen Starmer’s trips total three weeks, and five weeks, and now 26 days. Who knows the exact time?

Of course the PM needs to travel abroad sometimes, but this very new PM is noticeably away more than others have been. He needs to get on with the job at home.

I didn’t say it was wrong (or right for that matter) just giving details of the PM’s foreign trips.

Well said. No one supporting the farmers will listen though. We are a polarised nation full of people who reach a conclusion based on a tabloid headline, look no further into it and won’t entertain any other view.

In this day of telecommunications, Starmer could at least hold discussions when out of the country.
Sorry to harp on about France, but I've often seen Macron give lengthy interviews, and even televised lectures on home issues when he is abroad. Starmer appears to have switched off, literally.

So what was the point of your post? Do you want a Primeminister who is completely insular like Trump? Someone who has no interest in the country’s trading relationships etc with other nations? It’s just a silly thing to say!

Fleurpepper Tue 19-Nov-24 14:35:24

Victoria Derbyshire at her best again. Yes, HE, very clearly at the time, said he was buying a farm and land to avoid paying Inheritance Tax. It is all out there on record, no question.

His face!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 19-Nov-24 14:35:51

Stella4 that is your opinion of those of us supporting the farmers.

I formed my views after listening to two of DH’s friends who are working farmers, and know what they are talking about!
