The Barbour jacket apparently a symbol of the right!

In a viral tweet on X, seen more than two million times, one person wrote: 'The Barbour jacket is fast becoming a new overt symbol for the right', with another adding: 'Barbour Jackets are clearly the new uniform for a new reign of terror.'

I think this is hilarious, I have owned a series of Barbour jackets and coats over the past 40 years, my husband has numerous jackets from the brand as do both my sons, my daughter not any more…….perhaps she is leaning to the left!
I have always viewed them as good value practical and classic clothing, we have had ours reconditioned so sustainable too!

So if the Barbour jacket is a sartorial symbol of the right then what will the left be sporting this winter?

At least Barbour and Dryrobe are both very successful British brands. We should feel proud! 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧

vegansrock Thu 21-Nov-24 07:23:26

I’ve got a Dryrobe and I do go swimming in a local swimming lake. Very cosy they are. I’ve got some Le Chameau wellies but haven’t got a Barbour. I think Farage has ruined the brand.

MissAdventure Thu 21-Nov-24 07:24:43

Barbour don't actually score very highly on the eco friendly scale.

I must be a raging Commo- Kmart, Costco, Target and Aldi. They don’t have too many posh things round here and even if they did I doubt anyone would bother.

Dryrobes are worn by many of us here in Devon. I couldn't believe it recently when I saw people up in London wearing them. Where do they go surfing? 🏄‍♀️ 🌊

They are worn extensively by wild swimmers - and there are a lot of those in London.

DD works in London, but every weekend, winter and summer, goes swimming in a lake near her home in Hertfordshire. She swears by her dry robe and bought her father one to wear on the beach, when he goes swimming.

Just to say, if you get my humour, I was being a bit tongue in cheek with the Dryrobe surfing comment! It must have come out a bit skeewiff, and I don't mean ⛷️ ⛷️.
DGS wears his Dryrobe to football in London.

I've given up on Hunters, they're not like they used to be and mine get a lot of wear. I've moved to Aigle and they're comfortable and seem to be lasting really well, despite a toad taking up residence when I've left them by the back door. I've got an ancient Dryzabone riding mac but it's heavy compared to modern fabrics so hardly gets worn, neither does the ancient Barbour. Tbh the only thing the Barbour says about me is that I have put on a bit of weight.

JudyBloom Thu 21-Nov-24 08:33:47

Oh dear, more infantile rubbish trying to cause trouble. What nonsense!

NotSpaghetti Thu 21-Nov-24 08:43:03

I had a waxed jacket from the late 70s onwards as it was practical then.
I have no need for one now.

When talking about Barbour jackets are they saying any Barbour jacket or just the waxed sort?

Barbour now has puffer jackets for example... are they "right wing " too?

ronib Thu 21-Nov-24 09:07:54

I thought left wing thinking meant sustainability, recycling and buying secondhand clothing to avoid landfills and to save the planet. The longevity of the Barbour brand fits some of these requirements.
Barbour tends to cost at least double similar styles but are wind proof and water proof and last years. Not fast fashion. Maybe the left needs to think again about core values?

I go to a fair number of horse based events locally. I don't recall when I last noticed anyone wearing a Barbour. At this time of year it tends to be well insulated puffa type coats and jackets...

So they're clearly lefties too...

(I do know someone who shoots. I'll have to ask him if he's got one...)

Traditional Barbours don’t have “articulated” sleeves so are not so good for shooting.
Some models do.

This won’t please my undergraduate DGD who comandeered my twenty year old one recently and would be appalled to be labelled right wing. Obviously something else to hold against Nigel F!

Oh dear, we're all right wing if we don't agree with this Government, or mass immigration.
I'd better go and buy one!!!!

Well,I know nothing about the coats, apart from what I've gleaned here, but they're obviously quite the thing for people to wear, as long as they are well worn, passed on,and matched with a particular brand of wellies. Preferably with things nesting inside them.

They can't be seen as new...
I'd say that's fashion.

Grantanow Thu 21-Nov-24 09:20:58

I've still got my Barbour but it's now retired. It's not a Right wing symbol. They came with an excellent repair kit which I've used for other items.

MissAdventure Thu 21-Nov-24 09:25:06

I did see a nice parka looking one when I checked them out.

I dont think I could quite carry off the "effortlessly well off" look though. 🤭

I'm with you on Aigle foxie48. I've got their boots and a jacket. I didn't like to mention it here, because they're French! grin

It used to be Gannex.

It was Labour PM Harold Wilson who made Gannex so popular, definitely more Left than Right!

MissAdventure Thu 21-Nov-24 09:35:32

Theres another brand which are more eco friendly, I think it's called outthere or something.

My Aigle boots lasted just shy of 20 years, they were insulated and so comfortable, they had a repair for a leak but managed 5 years after that.
They cost £100, I thought I had spent far too much at the time but they were worth every penny.
I recently bought what will probably be my last pair of Wellingtons, the Aigles were cheap in comparison!
I should allocate them in my will!!!!!

BigBertha1 Thu 21-Nov-24 10:02:18

Lots of Barbours round here for farming, hunting, shooting fishing. I don't know about their political persuasion except the Tory candidate always gets in.

pascal30 Thu 21-Nov-24 10:08:50

long black down coat with hood for me.. because it is light weight.. I can't wear heavy coats.. nothing to do with politics

MissAdventure Thu 21-Nov-24 10:29:53

Me too.
More to do with a bad back.
It makes everything seem so heavy!

Mamardoit Thu 21-Nov-24 10:39:45

Well if they’re now a badge of the left, I’ll steer clear thank you. I’m quite happy with my feather and down snuggly coat, it keeps me lovely and warm. I just wore it this afternoon to go for my walk in the local park.

Are parks left wing or right wing these days?

It would depend if the ducks are in a row.

You would think a Labour park would have neat rows of duck after 14 years in opposition.

I've got an old pair of green wellies somewhere in the shed. I'm not sure what that signifies.

oodles Thu 21-Nov-24 13:56:20

My friend's poodle has a doggie Barbour coat. Eek, a right wing poodle!

knspol Thu 21-Nov-24 14:00:47

Had Barbours over the years, they last well and are very sturdy and waterproof, can be quilted or with linings to keep you warm, don't care what others think of them I'll be carrying on wearing mine.
