Thanks Wyllow, will read later.

Thanks Willow. Time to digest it properly. It's so good to have the text.

There is some good analysis on the news channels about each of the targets and the (considerable) challenges in achieving them. The NHS and housing targets are particularly tough I think. I’m glad he’s done this though, because it builds on the manifesto - it’s unusual for that to happen so explicitly once a party is in power.

I think it’s also unusual for a lot of the population to turn on a prime minister after such a short time in office………🤔

Casdon Thu 05-Dec-24 19:56:45

No, it’s not unusual Shinamae, have you forgotten how reviled Tony Blair was in his first few months in office? Or Liz Truss for that matter. People are always suspicious of change agents.

Mollygo Thu 05-Dec-24 20:00:58

Probably due to the mistakes he made in the first few weeks -reneging on what he said when in opposition and doing it himself, the freebies etc.
People had enough of the behaviour of the previous government. It looked as if there wasn’t going to be an improvement, and then . . . The WFP removal, which he condemned under Sunak as a way of filling a ‘black hole’, and immediately did himself for the very same reason!

He just talked about change and reform coming as far as I understood without examples of how Maybe I missed that Why did he mention his family were working class he's as far from working class as he could be What working class Dad pays out for a luxury place for his son to study After his speech I just thought he didn't say anything really just words

eazybee Thu 05-Dec-24 20:18:54

No, Tony Blair was not reviled in his early years of office. Disliked yes, but that was his personality, not his actions.

Casdon Thu 05-Dec-24 20:27:36

Yes, he was eazybee. There were calls for his resignation within a few months because of the formula 1 Tobacco advertising exemption, and the Cash for Honours scandal.

Jeanathome Thu 05-Dec-24 20:28:32

Sorry but a lot of poor wee children are doing full school days and wrap around care having just turned 4.

Let's see, be nice to have sone hope.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 05-Dec-24 20:36:40

What delicious irony to make this speech at the home of the “Carry On” films. That's made my day.

PoliticsNerd Thu 05-Dec-24 20:47:52

He was from a working class background with the luck of a good brain and effort to use it getting him where he is today. However, his three siblings didn't. Why are you jealous of his hard earned success?

He knows more than most that as well as hard work people need opportunity and is trying to explain that this is why he intends to make those opportunities available. It seems simple when you use facts not fiction to draw your conclusion TakeThat7

And where, oh where, does the idea his father paid for his education come from?

Wyllow3 Thu 05-Dec-24 20:56:11

Yes Casdon I think they are considerable and specific challenges not vague so pretty bold.

The housing, NHS, the police, are what people need badly. who can possibly say these aren't needed?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 05-Dec-24 21:21:40

They are, indeed much needed. I think all of us can agree on that.

Maybe Starmer should have stuck to just three - Make people poorer, make them colder, boss them around more. That would have been honest and crisp, totally in synch with what he’s done so far, and he’d have been able to achieve them all.

LizzieDrip Thu 05-Dec-24 21:35:16

It’s clear that, no matter what the Labour Government does, there are those on GN who will ridicule it. Hey ho🤷‍♀️

How do you work that out from that post?

It was Farage's parents who forked out for a luxury school for their son.

Oreo Thu 05-Dec-24 21:56:57

I must say I’m getting worried about this government that I voted for, since they came into power they’ve done some strange and un Labour like things. Now it seems they have instigated a tax payer funded review into something every two and a half days, over 60 in fact! They keep saying every day just about, all the aspirational things they’re going to do almost as if saying them is actually doing them.
I shall be surprised if they manage any of these grand plans.

And of course that never happened to the tories. 🤔

Did I dream those almost daily threads?

Wyllow3 Thu 05-Dec-24 22:17:53

I think it's pretty bold to list specific and commitments like this which we are a very long way from and say that you will be held accountable for them. Credit where its due.

M0nica Thu 05-Dec-24 22:28:23

There is nothing in this list of milestones that has not been said and promised time and time again.

What I wantto know is how they are going to achieve them.

New start housing in 2024 is going to be the lowest number for 8 years. Why? because this year the housing market has been flat, with sellers far outnumbering buyes and house builders with completed unsold houses on their developments, which are not selling despite price cuts have justed stopped building. What else can they do?

How will this government stimulate the housing market?

These kinds of questions can e asked of every 'milestone'. But unfortunately, to use an old phrase 'fine words butter no parsnips'
