Has anyone signed the petition regarding him receiving a knighthood?
I personally don’t think he’s done much for making the streets of London safer
Knife crime up, shop lifting, scooter/ bike crime up- all under his watch. May be wrong but what good has he done?

I also can't think why he should be knighted. But then, the likes of ex-cricketer Ian Botham and underwear manufacturer Michelle Mone were handed seats in The Lords and for what I know not.

Why was Jacob Rees Mogg and Gavin Williamson knighted? At least Khan has got voted in 3 times, has cleaned up the air, kept the freedom pass, free school meals, kept fire stations open, saw through the Elizabeth line etc etc

Spot on.
When pollution levels due to too much heavy traffic through London led to children dying of asthma Khan initiated traffic free zones near schools and ulez, both of which, though robustly contested, have been proved to lower pollutions levels causing asthma in children.
That alone is worth a knighthood.

It's worth looking up Sadiq's Top Twenty Achievements. Seems he's done a lot for London and Londoners.

He irritates the life out of me but then again I don’t live in London, didn’t vote him in and can ignore him pretty much.
We have Andy Burnham up here.
Much better.

Khan was voted in three times to do a very senior job in public life. Like or him or not, some people obviously thought he would be the best person for the job, which is a lot more than some of the people who have been knighted over the last few years.

Probably because nobody is interested.

Khan has kept TfL afloat despite being dumped on from a great height by the Tory government. London is the only major capital city not to have its transport system subsidised by central government. Loads of cities are envious of Londons transport system which Khan has prioritised over cars. Gets my vote.

Why not?

Since 2020 TFL has received £6.4 billion in subsidies from U.K. Government.

GrannyGravy Yes - that was for Covid support when no-one was travelling but they aren't routinely subsidised -plus Khan was forced to increase fares for that.

If you go onto TFL website it details the funding from Central Government.

Wasn't that for infrastructure improvements and covid support? Cost of the Elizabeth Line, for example.

The state has also continuously subsidised the privatised bus and train services. Please don't quote the TfL subsidy figure as though it's the only transport network that has been subsidised...

GrannyGravy13 Sun 08-Dec-24 16:35:35

MaizieD where have I suggested that it’s the only transport network that is subsidised?

CoolCoco: posted that London is the only major capital city not to have its transport subsidised which is incorrect.

My three children all live in London and all voted for him.

foxie48 Sun 08-Dec-24 17:13:17

I totally support him going into the House of Lords, his record is one of public service. It's voices like his that need to be heard as he has a wealth of experience. Anyone heard what contributions Baroness Owen of Alderley Edge has made in the HoLs?

Aside from being one of the worlds best cricketers Ian Botham has raised over 30 million pounds for charity.
I think he deserved his knighthood.

Ladyleftfieldlover Sun 08-Dec-24 17:46:49

A knighthood yes, but not a peerage. Lord Botham is a ridiculous award for a cricketer, however many millions he made for charity.

MissAdventure Sun 08-Dec-24 17:49:35

I always thought these "hoods" wear to recognise the achievements of the everyday person.

I don't know the difference between the different awards though.

MissAdventure Sun 08-Dec-24 18:28:24

Wear, were, wore... you know what I mean.

foxie48 Sun 08-Dec-24 18:35:26

I think I've got it wrong, Khan would need a peerage not a knighthood to sit in the HoLs. Duh!

What about the pollution levels that will be vastly increased when the Silvertown tunnel opens? Khan pushed and pushed for that despite local opposition. The approach road is the same one until very close to the Blackwall tunnel when it separates. One breakdown in either tunnel and the queues will back up for both. Oh joy if you live or travel in the area. Maybe some children's health isn't as important as others?

I certainly noticed cleaner air around London city. I also noticed the huge amount of homelessness, tents around the city- can’t say I felt safe down there.
