Just seen this petition last night- any thoughts?

Grandmabatty Sat 28-Dec-24 12:01:25

Naive at best. How do you stop illegal migration? And we depend on legal migrants in nhs, care etc. Would that also apply to universities who rely on foreign students for income. It's another xenophobic rant.

how will at risk jobs be filled if we cannot retain UK skilled people? we also have a skills shortage in many areas because of industry and manufacturing companies closing and those skills being lost.

JaneJudge Sat 28-Dec-24 12:05:48

here is a link to jobs that are eligible to skilled work visa
www.gov.uk/government/publications/skilled-worker-visa-eligible-occupations/skilled-worker-visa-eligible-occupations-and-codes
on the government website

It’s only possible to ban legal migration or at least call a halt to it from running into huge numbers. What we should be doing is only taking the people we need that have the right skills set and taking less so called students from countries such as Pakistan who are often to be found working in a restaurant.I think the Home Office gave up years ago actually weeding out those who are undesirable for the UK.I had high hopes that Labour may put a rocket up the HO so will be watching closely.
We do need immigration here to fulfill certain jobs but there needs to be action on the ones we don’t need.

My thought is that this petition was set up by some ill informed and prejudiced idiot who has no idea what the consequences of the petition being successful would actually be.

HousePlantQueen Sat 28-Dec-24 12:22:52

Yet more xenophobic ill informed nonsense which will appeal to the same group of people. A question; will this be retrospective? Johnson was born in New York, Sunak, Patel, Braverman, Zawahi were all born to ambitious migrant families who came here for a better life for their children.

JaneJudge Sat 28-Dec-24 12:24:20

Some of my daughter's female support workers are from Pakistan, they are all training to be nurses but work in LD support whilst they train. They aren't the only foreign support workers that are relied upon by the care sector. We would (personally and nationally) be buggered without them

Ilovecheese Sat 28-Dec-24 13:03:15

What a stupid and nasty idea.

MissAdventure Sat 28-Dec-24 13:05:47

What could you do to stop illegal immigration- make it illegal?

NotSpaghetti Sat 28-Dec-24 13:07:56

This whole petition (and government response) closed on 30 May 2024

Here's what the (then) government said:
The Government has implemented the most significant measures in a generation to reduce legal migration and end illegal migration; however, suspending immigration entirely would harm the UK’s economy.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-Dec-24 13:13:25

Well we could I suppose.

However, we have watched what has happened to the economy - post-Brexit. 10 years ago every individual was at least 3 times wealthier than someone in Rumania or Poland (as an example) now with the EUs help both countries have come on in leaps and bounds and their. Populations are wealthier than the average Brit, since we left the EU. But we are so grateful for our sovereignty and ability to control our own borders!

That would be a picnic compared to what would happen to our economy if we banned immigration.

But hey-Ho why let what is good for the country stop you in your ideologue, or feelings.

How about another disastrous referendum?

foxie48 Sat 28-Dec-24 13:21:04

I think anyone willing to sign such a ridiculous petition should also sign an agreement to refuse care from anyone working in the NHS who is an immigrant or whose parents were immigrants.

valdali Sat 28-Dec-24 13:22:41

Good idea Foxie.

Jaxjacky Sat 28-Dec-24 13:27:04

This

Maremia Sat 28-Dec-24 14:52:30

And, if you do manage to stop any form of immigration, with the dire consequences listed in the thread, would you also wish to stop emigration? Don't you have any friends and family who have moved to Australia, Canada, France, USA and so on?

Allira Sat 28-Dec-24 15:33:52

We'd need to stop emigration as well so that we don't lose workers to other countries!!
It sounds like a potty idea.

Obviously illegal immigrants need to be processed to find out if they have the right to stay or not and thst process needs t be speeded up so that they can work.

Why not train the “unemployed” in careers that we do need? I know many would ‘fall by the wayside” but I’m sure a lot would get a lightbulb moment and realise that working for a living is not so bad after all?

This would surely lessen the need for immigrants to fill the posts?

NotSpaghetti Sat 28-Dec-24 16:06:57

Mt61 - just wondering where you came upon this petition yesterday?
Asking given that it's been closed and responded to some months ago.

Who is circulating this kind of thing I'm wondering?

David49 Sat 28-Dec-24 16:09:41

It won’t happen, so it’s a local waste of time, for a start all foreign students are classed as immigrants.
Only the deluded will sign it.

There's probably a few on GN who are disappointed that it is out of date.

We, I just checked and it's not out of date.
Deadline
26 May 2025

But I'm not going to link to it.

Allira Sat 28-Dec-24 17:15:16

Not We, Well

Isn't the point of petitions to alert the government to issues they might not be aware of? The need for rights of way for ramblers, or to campaign for public transport routes where none exist - that sort of thing?

I'm sure they are aware that there is a large and vocal minority who dislike immigration and blame it for all sorts of ills. A petition like this will have no impact whatsoever, and is pointless as it is just reminding the government of what it already knows and is trying to find a way to manage.
