Hopefully, the Education Secretary will do away with that grumpy face now that her Department is instantly £500,000,000 better off from 1st January, technically speaking.

I'm genuinely pleased for every state school in the land, because that is how a caring educationalist thinks, despite their political persuasions. Though there will undoubtedly be flaws to the policy.

All being well, GNs' DGC and others will benefit from the windfall which will repeat itself three times a year. Let's hope we notice a big difference for our DGC not just in 2 or 3 years' time when the promised new teachers will have been trained, but next week even. There should be no excuses about the money needing to be used elsewhere in order to fill in the black hole.

I know for sure what I would do with that cash injection to make immediate improvements to pupils' lives. There's an awful lot hanging on this one for Keir Starmer and Bridget Phillipson. 🤞

I think that post by vegansrock was part spoof designed to get a reaction,

- which it did.

Its a caricature straight from the very "elite" schools beloved of many cartoons

It sure did!
But note that no one on here ever writes a crude caricature of low class, common Kyles and Jelly Belly children. It's off limits. In the past on GN we've had posters, who should know better, ridiculing children at private schools to prove their points.
Sorry, but it's something a few of us feel strongly about.

Sadly they do get caricatured though escaped. You just did yourself it by identifying names you thought fitted. Look at the threads about mobile phones, getting nails done, missing school, discipline, gangs, eating habits etc. Views of all shades are on Gransnet.

I'm not scrolling back through the forum to find one, but it's not totally unheard of - is it?
Whole generations of my family are criticised in a few scathing senrences.

All made up, of course.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 01-Jan-25 11:12:02

We used private and state schools for our five children according to their educational and pastoral needs at any given point.

I spent an awful amount of time flying between the U.K. and my family home abroad, the private sector were far more accommodating of this.

If I was in the same situation nowadays with state schools fining parents and penalising children (before someone comes on and posts that children are not penalised for their absences I can assure you that they are) I would have no choice other than to have all of the children either privately educated or at the very last resort homeschooled 🙀

I agree Casdon that state schools will never ever have the specialist teaching expertise found in the independent sector. I don't just mean in academic subjects, but in Sport, Music, Art, Drama etc. It also needs specialist facilities to take children with exceptional talents to the highest level, and this requires real estate and state of the art premises. Most parents at private schools won't want to make their children poorer in their sporting and cultural life, so they will pay more knowing that their children are receiving the best of the best that can never be equalled by a state school.

I don't intend to join this utterly pointless discussion any further but I've read most of the posts and if vegansrock's post was deemed to be insulting to private school pupils I feel that this one is the other side of the coin and is extremely insulting to state school teachers and to state schools which provide an excellent all round education.

I'm surprised that none of the teachers or former teachers posting on here has pulled escaped up on it.

Of course I did it myself, because I went straight back to the offending post and chose opposites to the vocabulary it contained. They were not my personal thoughts.

The effect is the same, whether it’s knowing or unknowing though.

You've totally misunderstood as usual, MaizieD, or perhaps on purpose!
I was very carefully not to insult state school teachers, who are brilliant at their jobs with the resources available to them.
I'm talking about specialists teachers at independent schools who are brought in from the world of sport, performing arts etc. Added to that the amazing facilities on offer. Have you ever visited or worked at Milfield School with its Olympic Swimming pool for example? I have. It isn't pointless to mention these extra benefits , unheard of in the state sector.

It's such a simple concept.

What happened to all the people who used to say on here "I'd be happy to pay extra if it helped (fill in, as appropriate)?

There was absolutely nothing in escaped's posts which could see which criticised teachers in the state system.

If it was a criticism of the state system then it would be blaming successive governments in eroding those facilities which we had come to expect for our own DC - ie good sports facilities, music lessons etc which may be lacking now.

Education should never ever be taxed!

I have just had a quick google search and it is illegal in the EU and the majority of countries world wide to tax education!

People sending their children and/or grandchildren to private schools have paid tax on their income already. I am guessing here but a fair few will be in the 40% bracket.

Labour is going after middle Englanders which they appear to abhor, without the balls to tackle the big boys who employ tax accountants to avoid paying their dues!

Tax avoidance is legal
Tax evasion is illegal

Straightforward, upfront taxes.

Target those businesses which evade tax.

MissAdventure Wed 01-Jan-25 11:37:05

Everyone pays tax on their income, though.
It's not just confined to those who choose private education.

MissAdventure Wed 01-Jan-25 11:38:42

Without a doubt, target the big business tax evaders.

It's about time someone did.

Well, not quite everyone but yes, we pay towards public services including education.

Those who opt to pay for private education for their children are paying three times over; fees, VAT on fees and income tax.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 01-Jan-25 11:39:28

Allira unfortunately as I have previously posted Labour have not got the balls to go after the big boys who consistently avoid their tax commitments via highly paid tax accountants.

Middle Englanders are an easy target as are pensioners.

Be very aware that it could be you and yours targeted next…

MissAdventure Wed 01-Jan-25 11:44:51

I've absolutely no doubt I'll be targeted.

I have been many times over the years, none of it my doing, none of it because I'm feckless , stupid, or lazy.
