Who are we fighting?

I am really fed up with, and to tell the truth feeling a little insulted, by politicians of all and no particular party feeding us rubbish. Talking to us as if we're unable to understand the complexities of a situation. For example Keir Starmer's New Year pronouncements - he is going to "fight for Britain". Fight who? No meaningless sound bites please, just talk plain common sense man, you might be worth listening to then.

Did you know (useless piece of information coming up) that Keir Starmer did Music A Level? Perhaps he can tell everyone what grime is, and it's relevance.
I think Fat Boy Slim was one of his peers.

I knew that.

He played the flute, I understand, to a good level and might have been thinking of a professional career in music. I think I read that in a review of his biography.

There are sciences where a knowledge of Latin is important so saying it should be ignored is not realistic, that does not mean that it should be taught to all children, there are a lot more other important topics that most children should learn.

Who is saying it should be ignored, David?

It's effectively been ignored for decades. I don't think the children at the local secondary mods were taught it in the '60s. We got it a grammar school, but weren't at all keen on it... I think it was taught mainly from habit and because it was a requirement for some university courses.

Is it Starmer that wants to get rid of Latin, and British hi.

Some children just mop up Latin - it was a surprise that two of my sons took to it but they did have an exceptional teacher. In fact, they were so ahead of the rest of the class that they spent the rest of the lesson just drawing. They became very good artists and ended up as engineers.

I have already made a couple of resolutions for this year, (which I have every intention of keeping.!)

So I want to put the efforts of the general strike and the suffragettes together. I do not want the people we help to be without the help for very long but I am starting to campaign for all women to have ONE day in the near future when we absolutely do NOT do what we do, for that one day. That we get together go on social media and in the newspaper and on the local news ,and get together in town centres with placards for each person with just an honest list of all the volunteer jobs they have done, and just show them the amount women do which they are not recognising. When they have the nerve to say that 90% of women wont lose out and that in any case they cant afford to pay us what we are owed. Well if we could get the whole country to do this, so there will be no meals on wheels, no library delivery, no hospital car service, no toddler group, no volunteer bus service etc etc , no volunteers in the charity shops. No shopping done for anyone, no visiting and allowing someone to get out for a short time etc. If we all stuck to it for that one day, they would see just how much we do and are not credited with. Between the arrogant behaviour over the Waspi women, and I have warned many women, who have been sensible and worked out what and how they will manage when they retire. If your documents said you will receive a pension at age 60 you are ok but if it says at pensionable age you will receive x amount. A friend of mine with her husband had the opportunity to buy a shop that they had wanted for a long time, but she was pregnant with their second child , when it became free to sell , and they went into all their finances and carefully worked out how they could manage, and duly went ahead with the sale. If a private firm had behaved like the government they would have been sued for fraud. To think you will be getting your pension from aged 60 and then they move the goal posts constantly until it is 68 before you get it, and to have them dismiss the fact that women have been cheated - as they usually were anywhere- paying married womens stamp - which is what they said to do- and now they are welching on the agreement. Have stolen our money and have the nerve to say they cant afford to pay it. Well I paid full stamp for over 11 years, lived abroad for further 3 years paying class 3 which was a very high price for which I was not in the country so had nothing from the state. Talk about showing me a two fingered sign, when they send me a letter showing that I had paid the equivalent of a weeks wage for a year, and they sent me the letter to say that th e Serps I think it was called and when I got to pension age I would have 6d on my pension!! Yes 6d, old money which now equates to 2-1/2 pence and not only is it insulting that the letter stamp to tell you that costs a heck of a lot of time and cost to send it to you! Still I must finish on a positive note. I am now denied the winter fuel payment, so went to the bank and asked if I could change to another account which paid a bit of interest. I was told NO, you do not have enough per month to get it!! So get no benefits, because just over the pension level, but the reality is that I am worse off as I have to pay for everything and it is dwindling my savings at a frightening pace. Still I am so looking forward to next July. You

see I shall be 80 then and will have 25pence extra to spend!!! I could write and tell my friend but sorry it would even buy a stamp!!!!! So I am going to complain, campaign, and do what I can to fight every single day of this year. Rishi Sunak is the MP for the region and will be very sorry that at every meeting he comes to I shall be there and will be quesioning everythg that happens or doesnt happen. Dont worry I shall be even handed and complain to and about labour tory or anyone else who thinks that women can be constantly cheated and insulted . Join me please!!

Apologies in advance as this may annoy you, but when you post such a long comment it helps the reader if you break it up into paragraphs.I often try and read your interesting posts but have to give up half way.😃

I agree Oreo but from what I was able to take in, I am very much on the same page as madelaine45.

I have decided and so has my DD, to have a "Do it yourself week" where the males have to take on all the domestic tasks normally done by me and DD and stop taking things for granted.

I should add that I am retired and so is DH and DD has three sons and works full-time.

The reason he hasn’t said that is because he is struggling to even make the Labour Party viable at the moment! During Covid he wanted us to sign up to EU vaccination scheme, Boris with all his faults just went ahead and bought vaccines, no haggling to get prices down as EU did, result we were being vaccinated way before the rest of Europe. Starmer is out of his depth and is not strong enough to lead his part let alone the Country hence supporters leaving in droves and popularity polls show lowest ever for a new PM. Actions speak louder than words and he certainly isn’t Action Man!!

We ended up paying way over the odds for the vaccine. And, although I’m in no way anti vacc in retrospect there were problems with the first vaccine we used which, I believe, it isno longer used? I don’t think the EU were far behind us in the vaccine programme. And many lives were lost because of Johnson giving people prior notice of the first lockdown so they could go out and party that weekend ( which they did).

Mollygo Fri 03-Jan-25 21:11:34

That’s funny.
Boris gave warning of the first lockdown.
Maybe not the brightest thing to do but . . .
Stupid people went out and partied . . .
and blamed their stupidity on BJ.
Not the brightest people.

MayBee70 Fri 03-Jan-25 22:10:57

Not exactly the brightest political decision either though.

That’s what I said, but stupid people can’t blame everything on someone else . . . Although stupid people do.
