Democracy under threat

Good to see Europe’s saner leaders and ministers uniting against the current baiting from across the pond. We can never underestimate the risk that we could lose our democracy and hard won freedoms. We came close in 1944, and the thought of my children losing the protections we have leaves me cold. From the Guardian earlier: “ A German government spokesperson did mention Musk by name, insisting his influence on voters was limited. “Normal people, sensible people, decent people are in a big majority in this country,” the spokesperson told a regular press conference in Berlin.

“We act as if Mr Musk’s Twitter statements could influence a country of 84 million people with untruths or half-truths or expressions of opinion,” the spokesperson added. “This is simply not the case.” Nevertheless the far right have 5 years to drag us into their gutter and no doubt they will do their utmost to unravel the world as we know it.

Fried Green Tomatoes seems to be Farage’s biggest cheerleader

TerriBull Mon 06-Jan-25 22:44:48

Yes who has said on here they'd vote for Farage? I haven't or wouldn't. Your sweeping generalisations about the education levels of great swathes of the population, are appalling quite honestly, you ought to read them back to yourself. You come across as lofty and patronising. I actually think there are plenty of people on the left who are a threat to democracy, one Justin, recently resigned, Trudeau for example, who took the extraordinary and unprecedented step of locking a dissenting group of people (the truckers) out of their bank accounts. Personally I fear leaders who assume that level of authoritarianism

Are you aware of Britain First, The English Defence league, The National Front?
All extremely far right groups. The vast majority of the them weren’t the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Crikey, that interesting thread soon turned nasty.

Well, I think, when a new poster comes on board claiming that educational levels of many voters are at about the level of age 9, ergo many voters have reaching educational attainments to Y4, possibly Y5, then a thread is bound to turn nasty quite rapidly.
Yes, it could have provoked quite an interesting discussion.

They’re banning various books in right leaning states across the US, anything considered too progressive by the right wing so called Christian populists

KateW19 Mon 06-Jan-25 22:51:24

Well having joined very recently and watched Fried Green Tomatoes doing a continuous hard sell for Farage and quoting the Telegraph, the oligarchs favourite bird sheet, I thought we could with redressing the balance for sanity’s sake

Allira Mon 06-Jan-25 22:52:32

Every one of these threads this week remind me of the US in 2015.

I really hope that you all do come together against Musk. He is dangerous.

Oh dear, that's a warning to heed.

I agree. Divide and conquer or divide et impera to those who had a classical education (not necessarily at Oxford, of course).

The left have been controlling speech for years, as I said ask any feminist. I am afraid the last few years have taught me that left automatically equals good and right equals bad is a demonstration of the lack of the critical thinking you are talking about.

I think most posters do a pretty good job of discussing various points of view, dismissing some and offering alternatives.

Galaxy Mon 06-Jan-25 22:55:14

I now this is hard but people are allowed to read the telegraph.

Allira Mon 06-Jan-25 22:59:52

It is hard but people are allowed to have different opinions.

KateW19 Mon 06-Jan-25 23:02:29

What the far right hate more than anything despite their demanding total free speech, is ever being challenged. I’ll continue to call it out on any politics thread as we’ve had 10 miserable years of having to tolerate racism, isolationism, mindless worship of far right muscle men millionaires, and the sorry mess it is making of what used to be peaceful society from all walks of life. Democracy is far too important, lest we forget as the great saying goes

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 06-Jan-25 23:04:36

And vote for Reform. I attended an all girls grammar school. I read quite a lot and although I wouldn’t consider myself any kind of an intellectual I wouldn’t say I was thick either.

I must be a thorn in your side for you to single me out.
Fame at last.
😁

Blimey KateW19 for a newbie you certainly don’t hide your light under a bushel.
But do remember - self praise is no recommendation girl.

I think your portrait has been hung in the GN Hall of Fame.
Or Rogues Gallery.

One or t'other.

I'm puzzled, I thought we were living in a democracy or was I dreaming whenever I've voted in the last 10 years?

Galaxy Mon 06-Jan-25 23:09:06

But you arent challenging, you are just calling voters thick, that's not challenging or original. What country are you talking about? We have a labour government currently in the UK, in America, the Democrats have been running the joint for 4 years, so for some of the last decade there wasnt a worshipping of far right muscle men as you describe it.

TerriBull Mon 06-Jan-25 23:11:26

Well my under developed brain seems to think that both the far right and the far left present similar threats to democracy, in free speech and authoritarianism. What do I know though, my 9 year old brain is still in Year 5 and it's way past my bedtime. My Enid Blyton awaits. Tonight it's 5 Go To Mar a Lago.

KateW19 Mon 06-Jan-25 23:13:58

No answers yet as to what it is about Farage that appeals to a certain minority of the voting public, maybe it’s his cheery approachable personality, his choice of far right populist mates, his self serving interests? It’s anyone’s guess :D

Allira Mon 06-Jan-25 23:19:30

I can't think, can't think, it's too hard.
Way past my bedtime.

My Enid Blyton awaits. Tonight it's 5 Go To Mar a Lago.
😂😂😂

I'm reading about Darrell Rivers having fun at Malory Trump Towers.
It's ever so good.

Galaxy Mon 06-Jan-25 23:20:26

Maybe he doesnt call them thick.

maddyone Mon 06-Jan-25 23:38:15

I used to love the Malory Towers books when I was a girl.
Did Enid Blyton write them?
I can’t remember.

Allira Mon 06-Jan-25 23:39:49

Yes, she did. And St Clares.
The Chalet School was Elinor Brent Dyer.

Allira Mon 06-Jan-25 23:41:29

Galaxy

Maybe he doesnt call them thick.

It doesn't say a lot for secondary school teachers, does it, if the educational attainment of so many voters is only age 9.

KateW19 Mon 06-Jan-25 23:50:24

It’s not the teachers fault, it’s underfunding

Which 5 is it this week? grin
